Republican presidential primaries, 2012

← 2008
2016 →

Incumbent President

Barack Obama
Democratic

The Republican presidential primaries for the United States presidential election of 2012 will be held in the 2012 calendar year and be used to determine the presidential nominee of the Republican Party.

Calendar

Guidelines for primary and caucus dates

A temporary committee of the Republican National Committee (RNC), set up in 2010, recommended a new plan. Under this plan, the traditional states (Iowa, New Hampshire, Nevada, South Carolina) would hold their events in February, states' elected delegates proportionally could hold their events in March, with winner-take-all states and any other remaining states holding their events from April onward.[1] The amendment was passed in August 2010 by the full RNC by a vote of 103–41.[2]

Straw polls

Several Republican and conservative organizations have held straw polls to test the support of potential presidential candidates among their respective memberships.[citation needed] The Ames Straw Poll, which traditionally receives major media attention and sometimes causes candidates to withdraw from the race, will be held on August 13, 2011.[citation needed]

Debates

The following debates have been scheduled so far:[3][4]

Primary and caucus dates

  • February 6 – March 5, 2012: Early states (Iowa caucuses, New Hampshire primary, Nevada caucuses, South Carolina primary)[11]
    • February 6 – Confirmed date of the Iowa caucuses[12]
    • February 14 – Expected date of New Hampshire primary
    • February 18 – Confirmed date of the Nevada caucuses
  • March 6–31, 2012: Primaries (and other contests) that provide for proportional allocation of delegates to the candidates, and all nonbinding caucuses;
  • April 1, 2012 onward: All other contests.

Convention

The 2012 Republican National Convention is scheduled to take place the week of August 27, 2012[13] in Tampa, Florida,[14] the week prior to when the 2012 Democratic National Convention is scheduled to take place.[15]

Speculated

The following is a list of individuals who are being discussed – in two or more unique, reputable sources that are less than one month old – in regard to the 2012 primary. They are listed in order of the date of the most recent media citation.

Speculated to run

Rick Perry
Governor of Texas
June 22, 2011: The Miami Herald: "Texas Gov. Rick Perry is emerging as a potential new hope of the GOP's bedrock conservatives for the top of the 2012 presidential ticket. Perry says he's 'thinking about' running for president, and he seems to make a splash wherever he goes, as the Republican Party's core is still looking for someone to get excited about"[50]

June 23, 2011: U.S. News & World Report: "Perry is an impressive figure. Governor of a large state, he’s a tax cutter who has balanced budgets and had to deal with many of the hard national questions already. Most people consider him a solid conservative who would have strong national appeal and would be able to raise a lot of money. His entry into the race, even at this comparatively late date, would be a game changer. So would his decision to stay out of it."[51]

Sarah Palin
Former Governor
of Alaska
June 22, 2011: Real Clear Politics: "The realities inherent in conducting the necessary legwork to mount a viable presidential campaign, even for a candidate as unconventional as Palin, may compel her to move closer to a decision sooner than she might have liked. But for the time being, she appears to be in no rush to either enter the 2012 fray -- or to distance herself from it." [52]

June 22, 2011: U.S. News & World Report: "Palin is a formidable political force with an intensely loyal and active following. In this, she too resembles Reagan, who built his political machine and eventually won the GOP presidential nomination by going outside the Republican Party, bringing new people to the table. Even a cursory examination of what Palin has been doing suggests she is capable of the same kind of coalition building. Her entry into the race, which becomes more and more doubtful as the days go by, would be the ultimate game-changer."[51]

Rudy Giuliani
Former Mayor
of New York City
June 15, 2011: Associated Press: "Giuliani is said to be considering another presidential run and recently visited New Hampshire, where the first primary is held."[53]

June 23, 2011: U.S. News & World Report: "Under the national security umbrella, Reagan united with economic and social conservatives—who did not see eye to eye on every issue—making it a powerful electoral force that won him two terms in the White House by landslides. As perhaps the only candidates whom the voters see as having national security experience, a perception arising from the strong leadership he exhibited on 9/11 and in the days and weeks after, Giuliani is in a position to build a similar coalition, one that is based on areas of agreement among conservatives, rather than areas of disagreement. It’s a winning plan."[51]

Thad McCotter
U.S. Representative
from Michigan
June 21, 2011: The Daily Caller: "Michigan Rep. Thaddeus McCotter says he will soon make an announcement about a White House bid in 2012."[54]

June 22, 2011: The Hill: "Despite being a little-known figure outside of Washington and his home state, McCotter is considering a run for the White House and said he would not be content with merely running to elevate his own agenda."[55]

John R. Bolton
(from Maryland)
Former U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations
June 20, 2011: National Review Online: "If John Bolton runs for president — and he very well might — he will run to win. 'I would not run as a one-issue candidate,' Bolton says."[56]

June 22, 2011: Richmond Times-Dispatch: "Bolton said he is 'thinking about' seeking the Republican nomination to run for president and will make a decision by Labor Day."[57]

George Pataki
Former Governor of New York
June 20, 2011: The Wall Street Journal: "Mr. Pataki, whose name seems to surface every four years as a possible Republican presidential candidate, really hasn’t been mentioned much this year. But the trip to Iowa comes after his group, No American Debt, ran ads in New Hampshire and aides told the Journal that he was considering a bid."[58]

June 20, 2011: Politico: Pataki "was visiting Iowa for an event hosted by his fiscal conservative group, No American Debt, and confirmed that he's still undecided on a possible White House bid. But Pataki sounded more like a man considering the presidential race and potentially willing to give up a comfortable post-political career."[59]

Declined bids

The following people, who were speculated to be potential candidates for the Republican Party nomination for U.S. president have – following the 2010 midterm elections – clearly and unequivocally denied interest publicly, or released Shermanesque statements, or have declared candidacy for a different political office in 2012, etc. This also includes anyone who has endorsed a declared presidential candidate.

Previous

The following people have been the object of presidential speculation in past media reports, but have not recently signaled an interest in actually running. This gallery does not include people who have declined to run (See above).
