:The zoo is out of date but Wikipedia possibly is also. According to turtles working group (http://www.iucn-tftsg.org/wp-content/uploads/file/Accounts/crm_5_000_checklist_v3_2010.pdf) dec 2010, page 000.116 it can be one of two, the article does not explain it or the previous naming. ::The overwhelmingly large genus Geochelone was split up over a decade ago and this is now followed. The checklist when looking for justification does require you to have all versions to follow it along, the 2007 version discusses ''Geochelone'' the 2008 and 2009 versions discuss the reasons for using ''Aldabrachelys'' over ''Dipsochelys'' and the most recent 2010 version just refers to their old discussions in previous versions. Under the rules of the ICZN the valid name is ''Aldabrachelys'' (prevailing usage) until a decision is made by the ICZN regarding the current case over this species. Aldabra tortoises mating
I saw a pair of these animals breeding at the Oakland Zoo on Sunday, October 21, 2007. You never saw such a crowd of mesmerized, fascinated, and horrified zoogoers. Let's just say that the male gets very vocal in a way I would not have thought physiologically possible. I just hope I can get this memory out of my mind someday. Naturally occuring or the result of human intervention? This is a useful point that should be addressed in the article.--Wetman (talk) 13:09, 3 October 2010 (UTC)

At the Cape May Zoo, the signs refer to this tortoise as Geochelone gigatea, which contradicts this article and Geochelone. Does the zoo have old or incorrect information, or does Wikipedia? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 72.94.61.91 (talk) 20:45, 2 July 2011 (UTC)
