Neurosurgery is the official journal of the Congress of Neurological Surgeons (CNS). Produced monthly by the Neurosurgery Editorial Office, located at Emory University, and printed and distributed by Lippincott Williams & Wilkins, the journal publishes peer-reviewed original research, reviews and editorials.

History

The development of Neurosurgery actively began in 1973 at the Southern Neurosurgical Society Meeting, held in New Orleans, Louisiana. For the next 3 years negotiations took place to either purchase an existing journal or start a new publication. In July 1976, during a meeting of the CNS Executive Committee, the decision to begin a new publication was made at the recommendation of the CNS Publication Committee.[1] CNS President Dr Robert G. Ojemann made the announcement of its launch at the 26th Annual Meeting of the Congress of Neurological Surgeons on October 27, 1976.[2] The initial issue of Neurosurgery was published in July 1977 as a bi-monthly publication. The journal shifted to monthly publication in 1979.[3]

The first supplement to Neurosurgery, named the "Millenium Supplement", was published in September 2000.[4] The Operative Neurosurgery supplement is currently produced quarterly, and other topic-focused supplements are produced throughout the editorial calendar.

Peer Review

Manuscripts emphasizing statistical methods and analysis are additionally reviewed by a member of the Biostatistics Section.
