Neurosurgery is the official journal of the Congress of Neurological Surgeons (CNS). Produced monthly by the Neurosurgery Editorial Office, located at Emory University, and printed and distributed by Lippincott Williams & Wilkins, the journal publishes peer-reviewed original research, reviews and editorials.

History

The development of Neurosurgery actively began in 1973 at the Southern Neurosurgical Society Meeting, held in New Orleans, Louisiana. For the next 3 years negotiations took place to either purchase an existing journal or start a new publication. In July 1976, during a meeting of the CNS Executive Committee, the decision to begin a new publication was made at the recommendation of the CNS Publication Committee. CNS President Dr Robert G. Ojemann made the announcement of its launch at the 26th Annual Meeting of the Congress of Neurological Surgeons on October 27, 1976. The initial issue of Neurosurgery was published in July 1977 as a bi-monthly publication. The journal shifted to monthly publication in 1979.

The first supplement to Neurosurgery, named the "Millenium Supplement", was published in September 2000. The Operative Neurosurgery supplement is currently produced quarterly, and other topic-focused supplements are produced throughout the editorial calendar.

Peer Review

Manuscripts submitted to Neurosurgery and Operative Neurosurgery are subjected to an initial primary review performed by the Editor-in-Chief and/or Section Editors. If deemed appropriate for peer review, a manuscript is assigned to 3 or more reviewers. Reviews are performed by both members of the Editorial Review Board and outside recognized experts. Manuscripts emphasizing statistical methods and analysis are additionally reviewed by a member of the Biostatistics Section.

Impact Factor

The ISI 2010 Journal Citation Reports listed Neurosurgery as having an Impact Factor of 3.298. The 5-year Impact Factor of the journal is 4.006 and the Immediacy Index is 0.246. The journal currently ranks 18th out of 187 Surgery titles and 50th out of 185 Clinical Neurology titles.

Electronic Access

Full-text access to the journal’s contents are available via the journal's official web site and via Institutional subscription services (eg, OVID). Text and figures can be viewed in HTML, PDF and EPUB formats. The online archive is complete, dating back to Volume 1 issue 1 (July/August 1977).

All accepted articles are available in an online preview version and identified as Published-Ahead-of-Print. These articles are indexed, assigned a DOI, and are citable by the Date of Access. The preview version is replaced online by the final, copy edited version upon print publication.

Social Media

• In November 2009, the journal began posting supplemental digital videos on a dedicated YouTube channel.
• In January 2010, the journal launched Neurosurgery Report, a blog dedicated to posting news and updates regarding Neurosurgery content. The journal also maintains an active presence on FaceBook, Twitter, Google Buzz, Reddit, Digg and LinkedIn.
• In May 2010, the International Podcast Series was introduced with article abstracts from the current issue translated and read in 7 languages (Spanish, French, Italian, Korean, Chinese, Japanese, Portuguese).
• In April 2011, the journal debuted QR Codes in the print edition enabling readers to directly access supplemental digital content from camera-equipped mobile devices.
