Mohun Bagan Athletic Club (Mohun Bagan AC) is a sports club from India, best known for its football team, based in the city of Kolkata, West Bengal, India. Mohun Bagan AC is one of the oldest football clubs in Asia, having been established in 1889. The first President of this club was Bhupendra Nath Bose. Mohun Bagan Club has a complete Football Academy in collaboration with Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) at Durgapur.

The football team has been hugely successful since its establishment and has maintained its status as one of India's most successful clubs having won multiple trophies of national significance. Federation Cup (India), Rovers Cup, Durand Cup, IFA Shield and National & Domestic League to name a few. Mohun Bagan was the first Indian team to defeat a European team, when the team defeated the East Yorkshire Regiment, 2-1 to lift the 1911 IFA Shield. Mohun Bagan still carries on an intense local rivalry with East Bengal Club.

History

The year was 1889. The Indian independence movement against the British rule was spreading rapidly after the uprising of 1857 Sepoy Mutiny. It was a period of growing political awareness, manifestation of Indian public opinion, and emergence of Indian leadership at national and provincial levels. The spontaneous and widespread rebellion fired the imagination of the Indian nationalists throughout the country. Under these circumstances, the birth of Mohun Bagan club on 15th august 1889 is not only organizing a football club but a step forward towards promoting a patriotic feeling, an awakening spirit in Bengali hearts. Mohun Bagan is not only a club, it is a national institution.[1]

The pioneer of Mohun Bagan Sporting Club, as it was named, was the then eminent lawyer Bhupendranath Basu, who later on became the president of Indian National Congress. The Basu family, the Mitra family, and the Sen family bestowed equal efforts towards the foundation of the club. The first meeting of the club presided by Basu himself, was held at his residence at 14,Balaram Ghosh Street of North Kolkata .The Secretary was Jatindranath Basu. That historical day witnessed the presence of many distinguished persons who were involved in many social reforms.[2]

The first ground of the Club was inside the famous marble palace, owned by Kirti Mitra of the Mitra family, known as Mohun Bagan Villa. It was situated at Fariapukur street of north Kolkata. But as a football ground this was not sufficiently large. It is believed that Mohun Bagan played the first match on this very ground against the students of Eden Hindu hostel.[3]

On the eve of first birthday of the club, some students of Presidency College, who were also the members of Mohun Bagan, invited their Professor, the famous Grammatologist Prof. F.J. Rhow. Professor asked whether the club organizes any kind of Riffle shooting or angling activities Knowing that there are no such activities of the club, he suggested that instead of ‘Sporting’, the word ‘Athletic’ will be more appropriate . The members agreed and changed the name to “Mohun Bagan Athletic Club”. The 2nd anniversary assembly was presided by Sir Thomas Holland who later on was appointed as the member of Governor General Council.[4]

In 1891, with the help of the Maharaja of Shyampukur, Durga Charan Laha, club ground was relocated to his ground at Shyampukur. That place is now known as Shyampukur Laha Colony. Later, with the help of Mr. Harry Lee, the chairman of Kolkata Corporation, the ground was again shifted to Shyam Square. The ground was shared with the Aryans Club and Bagbazar Club. The first tournament of Mohun Bagan was Coochbehar Cup, which was held in 1893. Mohun Bagan’s first opponent team was the European team, the ‘C’ Company of Sussex Regiment. At that time, the opponents of Mohun Bagan were National AC, Town Club, Aryans, Calcutta Medical College, Shibpur B.E College. St. Josephs College, Kumartuli, Ft. William’s Arsenal and the famous Sovabazar Club, founded by the father of Indian Football Nagendra Prasad Sarbadhikari.[5]

The year 1905 witnessed Mohun Bagan as the winner of Coochbehar Cup as well as Gladstone Cup . At the final of Gladstone Cup,Mohun Bagan defeated Dalhousie (winner of that year’s IFA Shield) by 6 goals to 1 .From 1906 to 1908 Mohun Bagan set a new record by winning the Trades Cup for consecutive 3 times. At that time, Trades Cup was the next prestigious tournament after IFA Shield. In 1906,Mohun Bagan also won in the Minto Fort Competition by defeating Calcutta Football Club. That year Mohun Bagan missed the chance of participating for the IFA Shield because P K Biswas, who had played for National also played for Mohun Bagan in the same year. This was considered as illegal by IFA and Mohun Bagan was declared disqualified for that year.In 1907 and 1908 Mohun Bagan also won the Gladstone Cup and Coochbehar Cup. In 1909 Mohun Bagan won the Laxmibilash Cup for the first time.[6]

The first opportunity to participate in IFA Shield came in 1909.At that time, the participation in IFA shield itself was an honour because not all teams were allowed to avail the opportunity. The other lucky four teams were Shovabazar, Townclub, Heir Sporting and Chinsurah Sporting. But Mohun Bagan was eliminated in the 2nd round after being defeated by Gordon Highlanders by 3 goals to nil.In the next year, after winning Laxmibilash Cup and the Asanulla Cup, Mohun Bagan lost to Rifle Brigade in the 2nd round of IFA Shield.[7]

Then came the year 1911,one of the most memorable years, in the history of Indian football. Mohun Bagan reached the final after defeating St. Xavier’s in the first round, by 3 goals to nil, Rangers in the second round by the same score again, Rifle Brigade in the third round by 1 goal to nil and Middlesex Regiment in the Semifinal .1st day of semifinal was a draw. But finally Mohun Bagan reached final after victory by 3 goals to nil against Middlesex Regiment.[8]

The 29th of July 1911. Mohun Bagan lost in toss and was placed towards Eden Garden, and East York towards Fort William. The match referee was H.G.Puller.Under the captainship of Shibdas Bhaduri,Mohun Bagan players entered the ground encircled by thousands of supporters hopefully looking forward for the victory. The captain of East York team was Sergeant Jackson. The total match time at that time was 50 mins and a break of 5 mins in between. In the first half, Mohun Bagan was in an aggressive approach. The effort of Kanu Roy, Shibdas Bhaduri and Bijoydas Bhaduri is worth mentioning. Equally attacking was East York. But there was no goal.In the second half, Mohun Bagan was under tremendous pressure. At the end of 15 mins, Sergeant Jackson lobbed the ball to score the first goal. But hardly 5 mins passed and Shibdas Bhaduri of Mohun Bagan equaled the scoreboard. And eventually after a restless tug of war Mohun Bagan experienced the final strike. The hero of this historical moment was Abhilash Ghosh who hit the neat goal, by grabbing a quick pass from Shibdas, just at the verge of the end of the game, when only 2 minutes were left. Mohun Bagan won IFA Shield. All the spectators were astonished by the stunning performance of Mohun Bagan. The Indians burst in ecstasy. The most incredible fact of the game was that all the players of Mohun Bagan were barefooted pitted against the leather booted English and irony saw the Indians defeating the English at their own game.[9]

Newspapers throughout the world, like London Daily, Manchester Guardian, Singapore Times, local newspapers like Empire, Weekly Mussalman, Comrade etc published the news of victory of Mohun Bagan appreciating and complimenting its skill and courage.[10]

“For the first time in the history of Indian Football, a core Bengali team, Mohun Bagan, won IFA Shield by defeating a competent White team. Though about 80,000 spectators were present on the ground, but most of them could not see the match. By noticing the flying of kites, they were following the actions of the match. And when they came to know about the win of their team, they started tearing off their shirts, waving them, tearing their hairs.” Reuter, London.[11]

Manchester Guardian commented ‘The team comprising of the Bengalis won the IFA Shield by defeating three top military teams. 80,000 Indians will remain witness to this event. There is nothing to be surprised at. The team that is physically more fit, has sharp surveillance and intelligence, wins.’[12]

‘The members of the Moslem Sporting Club were almost mad…rolling on the ground…on the victory of their Hindu brethren.’ –The Mussalman, Calcutta.[13]

Post 1911

From 1915, Mohun Bagan started playing in the First Division League. Mohun Bagan succeeded in occupying the fourth position in the League. In the year 1920,Mohun Bagan reached the Semi-final of IFA Shield.[18]
In 1921,the match between Mohun Bagan and Calcutta Club was stopped due to the huge crowd, which gathered to support Mohun Bagan.[19]
In 1923,Mohun Bagan again reached the final of IFA Shield, but was defeated by Calcutta Football Club by 3 goals to nil.[20]

In 1925, Mohun Bagan created another history by getting invitation for playing in the Durand Cup as the first ever Indian team, which was not a military team. In those days only British had the sole right to participate in the Durand Cup.[21]

In 1927, the Club won the Governor’s Cup of Hazaribagh.[22]

Year 1928 brought three victories to Mohun Bagan’s credit. It won the Power League, the Coochbehar Cup, and the Laxmibilash Cup. In the year 1929,due to a clash during the match of Mohun Bagan and Dalhousie, all the Indian teams withdrew their names from the IFA membership.[23]

In 1930, Mohun Bagan was the only Indian club to participate in the League as well as IFA Shield because of the prevailing political turmoil. However, Mohun Bagan won the Suryakanta Shield of Moimonsingh that year.[24]

In 1931, Mohun Bagan defeated Leicester regiment, the Prince of Wales and Calcutta Customs but lost to Highland Infantry.[25]

In 1933, won Dwarbhanga Shield, the Governor’s Cup of Hazaribagh and Lady Shifton Shield.[26]

In 1935,Abdul Hamid from Quetta (now in Pakistan) joined Mohun Bagan. He played as center half. Hamid for the first time inspired the players to play wearing boots.[27]

In 1937, Mohun Bagan played its first international match in home country this year against Englishton Corinthians of England.[28]

In 1938, the Club won the Trades Cup. Mohun Bagan and Calcutta Club combined played a match against a Burmese team.[29]

In 1939, Mohun Bagan became the First Division League champion.[30] In 1942, for the first time ever, an Insurance Scheme was implemented for the medical aid of the injured players during match.[31]

In 1943 and 1944, Mohun Bagan won the Calcutta League in succession.[32]

In 1945, Kartis, player of England and Arsenal provided coaching to the Club.[33]

In 1947, Mohun Bagan again won the IFA Shield. This year Club once again participated in Rover’s Cup, but the match was dismissed in middle of the game due to the collapse of Kuparez Stadium. On 15th Nov, the same year Club won the Calcutta Shield also by defeating East Bengal.[34]

Post Indian Independence

It is a very remarkable coincidence that the year of Indian Independence fetched two major achievements to Mohun Bagan’s pocket. After independence, Mohun Bagan is the first club to win IFA Shield. This year, from 5th Nov to 23rd Nov, one of the founder members of the Club, Sir Brajendralal Mitra was authorized as the provisional Governor of West Bengal.[35]

On 1948’s 22 August, Club again won the IFA Shield by beating Bhabanipur. In the same year, Afganisthan Government invited Mohun Bagan on the occasion of their independence celebrations but the Club could not attend because of its preplanned agenda.[36]

1949 was the year of Diamond Jubilee Celebrations. On this occasion, Club invited Swedish Football team Helsinghberg and played three matches.[37]

On this auspicious occasion, West Bengal’s Chief Minister Dr. Bidhan Chandra Roy commented, “I am proud and very delighted that, fortunately I have witnessed the IFA Shield tournament of 1911.During freedom struggle, Mohun Bagan’s existence inspired the youth. In the sports world of Bengal, Mohun Bagan has still maintained its excellence. Even after traversing 60 years, Mohun Bagan has still kept its youth unaffected. I pray that on our beloved Motherland, Mohun Bagan’s sporting spirit may survive forever.”[38]

Mohun Bagan AC ever since its inception have been more than a football club. Most of the members and supporters of the club consider it as something more than a club- An Institution, a tradition. Mohun Bagan has won all the major leagues and cups in India over its century old illustrious history and is still going strong.
