My Babysitter's a Vampire is a 2011 Canadian television series, based on the television film of the same name. In Canada, the series premiered on Télétoon, in French, on February 28, 2011 and Teletoon, in English, on March 14, 2011. In the United States, it premiered on Disney Channel on June 27, 2011.[4] A second season was confirmed to start production in September 2011.[5]
The show was created by Fresh TV, creators of 6teen and Total Drama. The show follows Ethan Morgan (Matthew Knight), who, in the television film, learns that his babysitter Sarah (Vanessa Morgan) is a vampire. In the film, he learns he is able to have visions and his best friend Benny Weir (Atticus Mitchell) is a spellmaster. The series follows the three as they take on supernatural forces including zombies, demons, ghosts, witches, and other creatures taking over their high school.
Season 2 of the show has been greenlit by Fresh TV, and was originally revealed by Vanessa Morgan on her official, personal Twitter.[3] The show is expected to air in 2012 on Teletoon.[2]
Premise
The series follows the adventures of a geeky freshman boy named Ethan Morgan (Matthew Knight), a Seer who has visions when he touches non-human creatures, his best friend Benny (Atticus Mitchell), a spellmaster, and his vampire babysitter Sarah (Vanessa Morgan) as they chase down supernatural forces. They are often aided by Rory (Cameron Kennedy), their dorky friend who was turned into a vampire in the pilot film, and Erica (Kate Todd), Sarah's best friend, who also became a vampire in the pilot film.
Characters
Main characters
- Ethan Morgan (Matthew Knight) is book smart, but he can be immature and lacks social skills, which means he oftentimes finds himself lost when navigating the complex social waters of high school. His social education is further hampered by the fact that he and most of his friends fit into the "nerd" camp at his school, a fact about which Ethan is more sensitive than his friends. He isn't known for his physical prowess, but he is brave and loyal enough to put himself in danger for those he cares about, in particular, Sarah. She remains his main crush despite the fact that he shares some of his friend Benny's girl-crazy tendencies. Ethan has premonitions and visions through touch and is known as a "Seer" although it is unclear how he inherited this ability. He relies on this gift, but he is still learning how it works and how best to use it in his life.
- Sarah (Vanessa Morgan) is technically Ethan's younger sister Jane's babysitter, but she ends up taking care of Ethan, his friends Benny and Rory, and her friend Erica, as well. She is a "fledgling" (a vampire who has not drunk human blood) which makes her neither fully human nor fully a vampire. This state of limbo causes Sarah much confusion and irritation even though she mostly tries to make the best of it. Since she hopes for a “cure” to make her human again, she tries to be a normal teenage high school student even though her relationship with Ethan sometimes makes this impossible. Sarah is physically-fit and, in addition to her numerous supernatural powers, has excellent fighting skills. These, along with her beauty and kindness, are what Ethan seems to find attractive. It is suggested that Sarah, unknowingly, returns his feelings. In Re-Vamped sarah turns into a full vampire after saving Ethan from a bite that almost turned him into a vampire.
- Benny Weir (Atticus Mitchell[1]) is Ethan's best friend. He is also book smart and seems to have an encyclopedic knowledge of science fiction, comic books and video games, but he struggles with fully understanding how some of his decisions could have terrible consequences. This inability on his part causes his intelligence to be called into question, in particular by his grandmother and Sarah. Benny is girl-crazy and, rather immaturely, appears to have crushes on every girl he sees (including Sarah). However, he has one enduring crush on Sarah's best friend, Erica, who is generally unwilling to return his feelings because she considers him to be a geek. Benny can do magic and is a "Spellmaster" which he seems to have inherited from his "Earth Priestess" grandmother. Benny's magic is, at best, hit or miss and he struggles with how to most honorably and effectively use it.
- Rory (Cameron Kennedy) is a new vampire and he revels in the novelty of this role. When he was human, Rory was a nerd and friends with both Ethan and Benny who considered him to be a bit annoying and, perhaps, even more immature than they. Being a vampire has further enhanced, rather than diminished, these character traits, although Rory finds it hard to see this in himself. Sweet and earnest, he also lacks scruples and involves himself in his friends' adventures largely according to his own whims and needs. Like Ethan and Benny, Rory is generally girl-crazy, but he has an open crush on Sarah's best friend, Erica who, for her part, toys with his affections to suit her own needs. In general, Rory doesn't view this as a problem.
- Erica (Kate Todd) is Sarah's best friend and a new vampire who, like Rory, takes to this role joyously and without too much thought about its moral implications. Although she mainly chooses to forget it, Erica was a harassed nerd before her transformation and she seems to be trying to make up for lost time by living up to the sexy and dangerous vampire stereotype. Unlike Rory, though, Erica mostly succeeds at this endeavor. Being a former nerd doesn't cause Erica to have any feelings of sympathy or compassion for other nerds. She enjoys the power she has over the geeky Benny and Rory due to their crushes on her. One area where Erica defies the vampire stereotype is in her affectionate friendship with Sarah.
Recurring characters
- Samantha Morgan (Laura DeCarteret) is Ethan's mother.
- Ross Morgan (Ari Cohen) is Ethan's father.
- Grandma (Joan Gregson) is Benny's "Earth Priestess" grandmother.
- Jane Morgan (Ella Jonas Farlinger) is Ethan's 8-year-old manipulative yet kind-hearted little sister.
- Principal Hicks (Hrant Alianak) is the principal of Whitechapel High.
