Brave (previously titled The Bear and the Bow) is an upcoming American 3D computer-animated fantasy adventure film. It is being produced by Pixar Animation Studios and will be released by Walt Disney Pictures. It was written by Brenda Chapman and Irene Mecchi and directed Chapman and Mark Andrews.[1]
The film is scheduled for release on June 22, 2012.[1]
Plot
The synopsis of the film reads:[2]
Since ancient times, stories of epic battles and mystical legends have been passed through the generations across the rugged and mysterious Highlands of Scotland. In Brave, a new tale joins the lore when the courageous Merida (Kelly Macdonald) confronts tradition, destiny and the fiercest of beasts. Merida is a skilled archer and impetuous daughter of King Fergus (Billy Connolly) and Queen Elinor (Emma Thompson). Determined to carve her own path in life, Merida defies an age-old custom sacred to the uproarious lords of the land: massive Lord MacGuffin (Kevin McKidd), surly Lord Macintosh (Craig Ferguson) and cantankerous Lord Dingwall (Robbie Coltrane). Merida’s actions inadvertently unleash chaos and fury in the kingdom, and when she turns to an eccentric old Witch (Julie Walters) for help, she is granted an ill-fated wish. The ensuing peril forces Merida to discover the meaning of true bravery in order to undo a beastly curse before it’s too late.

Development
Brave is Pixar's first fairy tale, and is somewhat darker and more mature in tone than their previous films. Brenda Chapman considers it as a fairy tale in the tradition of Hans Christian Andersen and the Brothers Grimm.[4] Chapman conceived the project and was announced as the director of the film, making her Pixar's first female director,[5] but in October 2010 she was replaced by Mark Andrews. Andrews has been confirmed as the new director of the film and Chapman as the co-director. Chapman was fired over creative differences.[6]
The film was initially set for release on June 15, 2012 but was later changed to June 22, 2012.[7]
Merida is the first female protagonist in a Pixar film.[1] Merida was originally to be voiced by Reese Witherspoon, but she declined due to scheduling issues. Instead, the character will be played by Scottish actress Kelly Macdonald.[1]
Music
Composer Patrick Doyle will score the film, due to his Scottish heritage. He is hoping to bring some of Scotland's native flavor to the music:
I want to make it accessible but to honour the Celtic traditions if I can. It’s a real fable set in Scotland. I could possibly use the bagpipes as a drone or something that gives atmosphere, but I will resist instantly using them until I see what’s going on … they are extremely loud.
Doyle had also written a drinking song for King Fergus and was traveling back and forth to Scotland for research. The composer has also been recording “unaccompanied Gaelic psalm singing”, which was something nostalgic for him.[8]
Marketing
The first teaser trailer premiered alongside the Disney Digital 3D release of Cars 2.[9]
