Hartvig Nissen (1815 – 1874) was a Norwegian philologist and educator. He founded Nissens Pigeskole, a school specifically for girls, in Oslo in 1849. In 1955 the school was also opened for boys and in 1963 the name changed to Hartvig Nissens Skole.[1]
Biography
Hartvig Nissen was born in Melhus, in Sør-Trøndelag county, Norway. He was the son of Lutheran minister, Peder Schjelderup Nissen (1775–1826). He was the 8th child in his family of 10 children.
He had great influence on educational policy in Norway in the 19th century, being the architect behind several law reforms.[2][3] In 1873 he became rector at the Oslo Cathedral School. He was a member of the Royal Norwegian Society of Sciences and Letters from 1852. He was elected suppleant for the Parliament in 1857 and in 1859, and was appointed Knight of the Royal Norwegian Order of St. Olav in 1864.[2]
Personal life
He was married in 1843 to Karen Magdalena Aas (1820–1900). They were the parents of Per Schjelderup Nissen (1844–1930), a cartographer and Johannes Henrik Nissen (1848–1915), an architect.[4][5]
