The demon Belial, or characters named for him, have appeared in many examples of modern culture.
Novels
- In Philip K. Dick's The Divine Invasion, Belial is The Adversary, whose influence around Earth obfuscates reality and interferes with Yah's powers. Steven Brust's To Reign in Hell features Belial as one of the Firstborn, an angel of the highest order that takes the form of a dragon.
- In the novel "Nevada" by Joshua Stephen Porter, Belial is a talking lizard who preaches Satanism, especially the elements of self-sufficiency to a very receiving America.
- In John Milton's Paradise Lost, Belial is one of the highest demons cast out of heaven along with Satan.
Films
- The classic 1922 film Nosferatu says that the titular vampire originated from "Belial's seed," implying Belial's hand in the creation of vampires.
- In the 1982 low budget monster movie Basket Case, the little monster inside the basket is named Belial. Though he is no demon, he is instead the deformed conjoined twin of the film's wholesome protagonist Dwain Bradly.
- The name Belial is mentioned in The Exorcism of Emily Rose, as one of the beings inside of the titular character.
- An Ultraman named Belial in Mega Monster Battle: Ultra Galaxy Legend The Movie, fused with Alien Reiblood to become a Reionyx and holds a Giga Battle-Nizer to control 100 Monsters revenging towards the M78 Ultra Warriors.
- In the 2011 film Dylan Dog: Dead of Night, Belial is a powerful demon which can be summoned through a magical artifact, the Heart, which contains his blood. Once the blood is injected in a vampire or a wolfman, Belial possesses its body and follows the orders of his master, but if the latter is killed, he is sealed again.
Games
- In the Gothic game series, Beliar is the god of darkness and of all that is unnatural and unholy.
- The role-playing game In Nomine, based around angels and fallen angels, has Belial as Hell's Demon prince of Fire and the enemy of Gabriel, Archangel of Fire, something of a change from other versions of Belial which identify him more with earth of the four classical elements. In Aldous Huxley's Ape and Essence, the post-apocalyptic civilization of Los Angeles worships Belial.
- In the video game Devil May Cry 4, one of the early bosses is "Berial" ('R's are interchangeable for 'L's when translating from Japanese). He appears as a flaming centaur with wings and horns, and introduces himself as the "conqueror of the Fire Hell".
- In the turn-based strategy video game Shining Force for Sega Genesis, Belial is a type of non-boss, non-unique enemy character unit. He is a flying enemy similar to a Gargoyle, with normal "melee" attacks, the ability to cast "Bolt" (a lightning spell) and "Muddle" (a spell that temporarily blinds members of your team, making melee attacks less effective and less likely to strike their intended target.
- In the video game series Painkiller, Belial is portrayed as an angel/demon hybrid who was outcasted by Lucifer and the other angels for his heritage and sought revenge against his divine brethren when Lucifer ordered Cerberus to amputate Belial's wings. After Lucifer was killed, Belial saw this as an opportunity for revenge against his tormentors. Belial is depicted in the game as a wisecracking demonic angel with tattered wings, various runes on his body, a demonic arm, and a sardonic sense of humor.
- In the horror action-adventure video game Realms of the Haunting, Belial appears as one of the main antagonists of character Adam Randall.
- In the video game Odin Sphere, Belial appears as one of the dragons the characters must defeat in several occasions, due to being constrained by a magic spell by one of the wicked Three Wise Men.
- In the video game Final Fantasy XII, Belial (named as "Belias the Gigas") appears as a boss.
- In Dungeons and Dragons, Belial is the former ruler of the fourth layer of the Nine Hells, Phlegethos. Like his classical self, he is described as a very lustful being.
- Belial makes appearances in the Megami Tensei games, wherein he is depicted as a large, red-scaled, and winged demon wielding a trident. In Devil Survivor he appears as one of the participants in the War of Bel.
- In the Devil Summoner games, he is also one of the demons required for the fusion of Alice and is one of her two legal guardians, the other one being Nebiros. Upon Alice's defeat, they capture her soul in a staff and beg the protagonist to revive her with it.
- He makes an appearance in the BloodRayne game (as Beliar), where he is a monster that keeps growing until it kills the player.
- In the Warhammer 40k universe, Belial is the company master of the veteran first company unit of the Dark Angels chapter, the Deathwing. In keeping with the Dark Angels theme other characters from the chapter are similarly named after darker archangels such as the chapter master Azrael named for the archangel of death and Sammael, a distortion of Samael.
- Morrigan Aensland from the Darkstalkers series of fighting games (produced by Capcom) is the daughter of Belial, according to her official story.
- Belial is one of the hero in the online game Emil Chronicle Online. He and the other 3 heroes are involved in the main story of the ECO World.
Comics
- Belial is a central character in the manga series Tarot Cafe where the protagonists Pamela and Belus are collecting the beads from his demonic necklace. He is responsible for some of the events in the series.
- Belial was also in the manga Angel Sanctuary as the Mad Hatter, a fallen angel and the Satan of Pride. She was in love with Lucifer, though her love was never returned, and because of such, she put a curse on him: the day he would love her would be when her feelings would change. She was once Raphael's assistant, but aided Lucifer in turning angels. Though she is female, she has the appearance of a man, and thus confuses many of the characters.
- In the DC Comics Universe, Belial is the father of Etrigan the Demon, and a sometimes member of Hell's former ruling Triumvirate (more often consisting of Lucifer, Beelzebub and Azazel). He also plays a part in the Reign in Hell miniseries as a lackey of Neron, a later ruler of the DC Hell. The vilain Sabbac, who gets his powers from six demons, gets wisdom with Belial.
- Belial (spelled B'Liale) is a major villain in the Avengelyne comic series.
- In the manga series Vassalord, it was revealed that Barry, an incubus with shape shifting abilities, is the demon Belial. This was revealed when Charles and Johnny banished him with the holy verse that revealed his true name.
Cartoons/Anime
- The evil Digimon BelialVamdemon serves as the final antagonist for the season in which he appears, 'Digimon Adventure 02'. His English name is Malo Myotismon. He is the most lethal form of the Digimon Myotismon, combining all the power of Venom Myotismon with all the intelligence of Myotismon.
