Plot summary
A bus carrying 23 people from Los Angeles, California to Las Vegas, Nevada crashes just before reaching its destination, killing nine of the passengers. The driver, before he dies, states that just before the accident, the steering wheel began to vibrate wildly, making the bus impossible to control. The bus finally came to a stop on its right side, on top of a sports car that had been following it. At the scene, the investigators discover that a parolee who had been on the bus is now unaccounted for, and that there is evidence of foul play. They later track down the parolee after they realize that he was in the only seat on the bus that provided an unobstructed path through the windshield, and that he had been thrown through it.
The team investigates the case from several angles, wondering if someone on the bus was a target. They find that one woman was upset because her boyfriend, the driver of the sports car, had followed her to Vegas. Workers at the rest stop confirm that the couple had fought, but Catherine doesn't believe that he sabotaged the bus. Eventually it is revealed that an employee from the bus company who had lost his job was dosing the tires of buses with chloroform, which made the rubber stiffen and caused the tire to blow out. In addition, during an earlier investigation of the bus company, they find that the defective bolts, found sheared at the crime scene, were sold by the lowest bidder, contributing to the crash. He states that he never heard of a flat tire taking out a whole bus, to which Brass replies, "There's always a first time."
This episode marks Greg's first time in the field. He freezes and delays in calling for help when the bus driver starts coughing up blood, which leads many of the lab techs (including himself) to believe that he screwed up. Sara, however, denies that he made any mistake, Nick does not blame him, and Grissom denies hearing that he did anything wrong. In response to this statement, Greg remarks that, "I enjoyed [being in the field] fine."
