Etymology

Haslam which means 'dweller under the hazel tree' is a shortening of the name Hazelham, meaning a village near a hazel tree.

The surname Haslam is also encountered in countries such as Malaysia. The likely derivation there would be from the Arabic stem that it shares with the word Islam.

• There is a Haslam Park in both Bolton and Preston. The one in Bolton has a primary school of this name.

• There was once a Haslam Hall in Bolton, a Victorian mansion house that was the former home of cotton magnate John P. Haslam. It was demolished in 1999 by Bolton council, who foolishly allowed what was one of Boltons last notable pieces of Victorian architecture to be demolished. Most of Bolton's townfolk were shocked that the demolition was approved by Bolton council as the property was left to the good people of the town by Lord Haslam in his will.
