Hey Gareth, I really miss that old drinking article a lot. Wiki got a lot less fun for me when it bit the dust. Some people have no sense of humor. But I do like to think of all those famous drinkers out there, with nobody to remember them. Al Fayed Profile

Hi Gareth, I did a lot of research on Al Fayed for my thesis, and lots of the references that are used in his Wikipedia BLP aren't accurate. I changed the order because they weren't chronological, neutralised the tone and replaced some of the inaccurate references with reliable ones. I can go through the points with you one by one if you would like me to; I really think his BLP should be corrected.Latika1976 (talk) 20:46, 13 October 2011 (UTC)

We should go through the points one by one. By "neutralizing the tone" you also happened to remove any incident with negative connotations. When I rewrote the article I strove to be neutral, and avoided the xenophobic and sensationalist critiques of Fayed that abound online. The article is impeccably sourced, depending on a well received biography by Tom Bower, a Vanity Fair profile by Maureen Orth, and news sources from BBC News Online, The Times, The Daily Telegraph, The Guardian and The Independent. Ok, first point - the British naturalisation/passport is too detailed for a BLP, and it isn't right. Al Fayed applied to become a British subject twice (once in 1994 and once in 1999); two application's isn't really a 'quest for British citizenship'. This is what I mean about the tone problem. It's exaggerated to the negative. The fact that some MPs believed the initial decision not to grant Al Fayed's application was ‘motivated by political spite and malice’ [ref early day motion 737] and the fact that Al Fayed's brother's application was approved in 1999, but Al Fayed's was refused, (which backs up what these MPs said) should really be included.

The content says the Fayed brothers application for British citizenship was rejected in December 1993 - it wasn't rejected until 1995. It also says in 1997 the Fayeds' citizenship request was considered again,[85] but rejected in May 1999 - as mentioned above, Al Fayed's brother's application was granted, Al Fayed's was refused...Latika1976 (talk) 21:09, 17 October 2011 (UTC)

I believe even a single application forms part of a "quest for British citizenship". I can see nothing negative in desiring to become a British citizen. I have now removed this from the "controversial" part of the lead section. Thanks for the citation on his brothers successful citizenship application. I understood from You're Fayed that Ali Al-Fayed had obtained citizenship by marriage, but I couldn't find a cite for this. [1] (6mins in)

I am reluctant to quote from EDM's. Leaving aside Al-Fayed's lobbying of MP's, there are numerous EDM's both for and against Al-Fayed, and I do not wish to highlight one opinion at the expense of another. His citizenship request was rejected in December 1993, this is described on page 330 of Bower's biography, this rejection was not made public until February 1995 (Bower 360).
