GOCE copy edit drive

Greetings, the Wikipedia Guild of Copy-Editors invites you to participate in the November 2010 Backlog Elimination Drive, a month-long effort to reduce the backlog of articles that require copy-editing. The drive will begin on 1 November at 00:00 (UTC) and will end on 30 November at 23:59 (UTC). The goal for this drive is to reduce the backlog by 10% (approximately 500 articles). We hope to focus our efforts on the oldest three months (January, February, and March 2009) and the newest three months (September, October, and November 2010) of articles in the queue. November 2010 backlog elimination drive update

Greetings from the Guild of Copy Editors Backlog Elimination Drive! GOCE November 2010 backlog elimination drive progress graphs We have reached the midway point in our backlog elimination drive, so here is an update. Participation report — The November drive has 53 participants at this point. We had 77 participants in the September drive. In July, 95 people signed up for the drive, and in May we had 36. If you are not participating, it is not too late to join! Progress report — The drive is quite successful so far, as we have already almost reached our target of a 10% reduction in the number of articles in the backlog. We are doing very well at keeping our Requests page clear, as those articles count double for word count for this drive. Please keep in mind the possibility of removing other tags when you are finished with an article. If the article no longer needs {{cleanup}}, {{wikify}}, or other similar maintenance tags, please remove them, as this will make the tasks of other WikiProjects easier to complete. GOCE Drive – Final push

Greetings GOCE Backlog elimination drive participant, We are now coming up to the last few days of the drive, the last for 2010. Currently, it looks like we will achieve our target for reducing the backlog by 10%, however, we still have huge numbers for 2009. We have 55 participants in this drive. If everyone just clears 2 articles each, we will reduce the backlog by a further 110 articles. If everyone can just do 3 articles, we will hit 165. If you have yet to work on any articles and have rollover words, remember that you do need to copyedit at least a couple of articles in this drive for your previous rollover to be valid for the next drive. There are many very small articles that will take less than 5-10 minutes to copyedit. Use CatScan to find them. Let's all concentrate our firepower on the first three months of 2009 as we approach the end of this final drive for the year. November 2010 Backlog Elimination Drive Conclusion

Greetings from the Guild of Copy Editors Backlog Elimination Drive! We have reached the end of our fourth backlog elimination drive. Thanks to all who participated. Stats GOCE November 2010 backlog elimination drive graphs 58 people signed up for this drive. Of these, 48 people participated in the drive. Although we did not eliminate the months we planned to (January, February, and March 2009; and August, September, and October 2010), we did reduce the backlog by 627 articles (11.2%), which was over our goal of 10%. 49 awards will go out to 33 of 48 participants. Check out the complete list of barnstar winners here. Barnstars If you copy edited at least 4,000 words, you qualify for a barnstar. If you participated in the September 2010 backlog elimination drive, you may have earned roll-over words (more details can be found here). Guild of Copy Editors January 2011 backlog elimination drive Greetings from the Guild of Copy Editors January 2011 Backlog elimination drive! The drive is halfway over, so here are some mid-drive stats. Participation GOCE January 2011 backlog elimination drive progress graphs So far, 43 people have signed up for this drive. Of these, 25 have participated. If you signed up for the drive but haven't participated yet, it's not too late! Try to copy edit at least a few articles. Remember, if you have rollover words from the last drive, you will lose them if you do not participate in this drive. If you haven't signed up for the drive yet, you can sign up now. Progress report We have eliminated two months from the backlog – January and February 2009. One of our goals is to eliminate as many months as possible from the 2009 backlog. Please help us reduce the size of this part of the backlog if you haven't already. Another goal is to reduce the entire backlog by 10%, or by 515 articles. GOCE January Backlog elimination drive conclusion

Guild of Copy Editors January 2011 Backlog elimination drive Greetings from the January 2011 Backlog elimination drive! We have reached the end of the month and the end of another successful drive; thanks to all who participated. Statistics 54 people signed up for the year's first Backlog elimination drive. Of these, 40 participated. One of our goals was to reduce the size of the backlog by at least 10%. We managed to reduce the backlog by 633 articles, or about 12%. Another goal was to eliminate as many 2009 months as possible from the queue. We eliminated January, February, March, and April—4 out of 12 months is not bad! In addition, we eliminated 37% of all remaining 2009 articles from the queue. Chaosdruid copy edited Kutch Gurjar Kashtriya for 32,711 words, which is the largest single article completed in one of our drives so far. This article counts as six 5000-K articles, and Chaosdruid wins the "most 5000-K articles" leaderboard category. Way to go! A complete list of individual results is here. Barnstars If you copy edited at least 4,000 words, you qualify for a barnstar. If you participated in the November 2010 Backlog elimination drive, you may have earned roll-over words (more details can be found here). Guild of Copy Editors March 2011 backlog elimination drive report Greetings from the Guild of Copy Editors March 2011 Backlog elimination drive. Thank you for participating in the March 2011 drive! This newsletter summarizes the March drive and other recent events. Participation GOCE March 2011 backlog elimination drive progress graphs There were 99 signups for the drive; of these, 70 participated. Interest was high mainly due to a link to our event from the Watchlist page. We had a record-breaking 84 articles listed on the Requests page in March; 11 of these have been promoted to Good article status so far. Several of our recent efforts have received Featured Article status as well, and the GOCE is becoming a solid resource for the Wikipedia community. Many thanks to editors who have been helping out at the Requests page and by copy editing articles from the backlog. Progress report Remarkable progress was made in reducing the backlog this month, as we now have fewer than 500 articles remaining from 2009. We are well under the 4,000-article mark for the total number remaining in the queue. Since our backlog drives began in May 2010 with 8,323 articles, we have cleared more than 53% of the backlog. A complete list of results and barnstars awarded can be found here. Barnstars will be distributed over the next week. Michel Elefteriades

Hi there. You have placed both a POV-check and a peacock-term tags on the article. But google the subject's name and you'll get 37,200 hits. This guy is famous in Lebanon and the Middle East as a political activist, former resistance fighter, businessman, artist and music producer whose music is played on radios and TVs worldwide. His record label is a Warner affiliate and he regularly appears in many TV shows -and was even a star judge in the Middle East version of X-Factor for 2 consecutive years. Plus his notability is not questionable: Numerous press articles and media reports are referenced in the article, including from leading media the world over, from LA Times, to Der Spiegel, El Pais, Al-Ahram, Hurriyet, Al Jazeera... and as you know these media are serious in verifying their sources before they publish. Incidentally, I read somewhere (but can't remember where) that he recently visited the U.S. by invitation from the State Department. Anyway I have reviewed the whole article and almost everything in it is sourced in the references and external links. The only part of the article that I was unable to find a source for is about the prize he was reportedly awarded by the Lebanese Presidency -under the Social Commitments section. I had heard that news at the time I wrote it but never actually found any credible citation, this is why I have now just removed it. Other than that, I honestly think the article does not deserve the Peacock and POV templates placed on it; they do not do it justice and should, in my humble opinion, simply be removed. Thanks. Tennessee Encyclopedia

Hi. I see that you are working on improving a lot of articles. That's great! However, some of your efforts at improvement may be misfiring. When you edited Jackson Purchase (U.S. historical region) you tagged reference links to the Tennessee Encyclopedia of History and Culture as dead links, then hid those reference citations with the <!-- hidden text --> coding. As a general rule, that approach to handling dead URLs is inappropriate. Those references were cited in that article because they were the actual sources of the content presented in that article, consistent with WP:SAYWHEREYOUGOTIT -- and published sources don't stop existing merely because an associated URL is not currently available. Furthermore, when you hid the template with which you flagged those references, you made the template useless because you made it (and the associated references) invisible to bots and humans working on cataloging and repairing problems. See WP:DEADREF and Wikipedia:Link_rot#Keeping dead links for advice on best practices in the handling of dead links.

More specifically, there was no good reason to tag Tennessee Encyclopedia of History and Culture links as dead. The specific article links did return 404 errors, but that doesn't mean the contents are no longer available to users. They reorganized their website a few weeks ago and changed the link formats, so a user should be able to find the content easily by navigating to the home page and searching on the article title. Additionally, the Tennessee Encyclopedia was published as a book in 1998, so most of the articles cited in Wikipedia would be readily available from a paper copy of the book, which is obtainable by purchase or in most Tennessee libraries.

There's no harm done in that article, as I have restored the references. However, if you have been in the habit of marking reference URLs (to this or other documents) as dead and hiding them, please go back and unhide them so that they are no longer invisible to other members of the Wikipedia community. --Orlady (talk) 14:32, 24 April 2011 (UTC)

GOCE drive invitation

Greetings from the Guild of Copy Editors The latest GOCE backlog elimination drive is under way! It began on 1 July and so far 18 people have signed up to help us reduce the number of articles in need of copyediting. Although we have cleared the backlog of 2009 articles there are still 3,935 articles needing copyediting and any help, no matter how small, would be appreciated. Hardin

Some odd edits on the John Wesley Hardin article. You replaced the ib because you claimed the criminal ib was "biased" ... he was convicted and jailed for murder. No bias there. You added a section to Early Life using the colloquial term "school life" but it included the Mage incident which has no connection to his school. --Hutcher (talk) 04:27, 12 September 2011 (UTC)
