Allen H. Loughry II is an author,[1]jurist, and academic[2] from West Virginia. He is best known for writing Don’t Buy Another Vote, I Won’t Pay for a Landslide. He is currently running as a Republican candidate in the 2012 election for the Supreme Court of Appeals of West Virginia.[3]
Early life and education
Loughry was born and raised in Tucker County, West Virginia. He developed an interest in West Virginia politics and government at the age of six and went on to receive a B.S. from West Virginia University. He holds four separate Law degrees including and S.J.D. (Doctor of Judicial Science) from the American University, Washington College of Law; an LL.M. (master of Laws in Criminology and Criminal Justice) from the University of London; an LL.M. (master of Laws in Law and Government) from the American University, Washington College of Law; and a J.D. from Capital University School of Law. In addition, he has studied law at the University of Oxford.[4]
Career
Since 2003, Loughry has served as a clerk for the Supreme Court of Appeals of West Virginia. Before that, he served as a senior assistant attorney general in the West Virginia Attorney General’s Office, an aide to Gov. Gaston Caperton and a special assistant to a member of the U.S. House of Representatives. He has argued more than 20 cases before the West Virginia Supreme Court.[5] In addition, he has argued or filed pleadings in the Supreme Court of the United States, the United States Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit, the United States District Court for the Southern and Northern Districts of West Virginia and the Southern District of Florida.[6] Loughry is also an adjunct professor at the University of Charleston, and has written for the Associated Press.[7]
Authorship
In 2006, Loughry published Don’t Buy Another Vote, I Won’t Pay for a Landslide: The Sordid and Continued History of Political Corruption in West Virginia after ten years of research stemming from his doctoral thesis. The book covers corruption in West Virginia going back to 1861, before statehood, and continues to 2006. The book covers such topics as John F. Kennedy’s 1960 Primary Election, the Hatfields and McCoys, Mother Jones, the Battle of Blair Mountain, gambling, sex scandals, and the author’s road map to reform.
Forewords were written by Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) and former Sen.Robert Byrd (D-WV).[8]
2012 West Virginia Supreme Court election
Loughry announced his candidacy for a seat on the West Virginia Supreme Court of Appeals, and plans on running on the Republican ticket.[9]
