Darwyn Al-Sayeed is a Muslim ex-con who has just been released from prison and finds his way to an Islamic extremist named Farik, who recruits him to join a terrorist sleeper cell planning an attack in Los Angeles. On his first mission he is sent with a member of the group, Abdula "Bobby" Habib, to watch a teenage girl with her boyfriend. After getting along well, Bobby invites Darwyn to his daughter's birthday party, where he meets the rest of the members of the cell, Ilija, a former citizen of Bosnia and substitute teacher, whose family was killed in a military attack and also served with Farik in the Bosnian military; Christian, a tour bus driver and former skinhead from Paris, who left his pregnant wife Zhara for America; and Tommy, an average american who is the manager of a bowling alley. Darwyn also meets Gail, a single mother, whose relationship grows throughout the series. On a ride, Farik takes the cell to a a desert andclaims that someone is a traitor. Darmyn becomes worried, but he soon finds out that Farik is talking about Bobby, which he talked about their terrorist plans to his uncle in Egypt. The cell buries Bobby up to his neck and takes place in stoning him, until Darwyn decides to end his torture and grabs Farik's gun and shoots Bobby in the head, putting him out of his pain as well as poisoning the case against the terrorist cell.
