Subhasish Roy Chowdhury (born 27 September 1986) is an Indian football player. Currently the first goalkeeper of the successful Indian football team Dempo S.C. in the I-League in India. He was the second choice of Bob Houghton in the Indian National Football Team. In August 2007, he was part of the Indian team that won the Nehru Cup International Football Tournament 2007 for the first time.
Career
The former TFA cadet came into the limelight while playing for Mahindra United in the 2005 Federation Cup. He produced a string of good performances which ultimately helped the Mumbai club win the tournament. Subhasish also won the National League that season and by the end of that campaign he was considered to be one of the most talented custodians in the country.
Subhasish played for the India Under-23 side in the 2008 Olympic qualifiers and then Bob Houghton also called him up for the 2007 Portugal camp. He was the second choice goalkeeper during the 2007 Nehru Cup and since then he has been Subrata Paul’s deputy in the national team. He made his international debut, his only senior appearance till date, in the 1-0 win over Maldives in a group game in the 2008 SAFF Cup.
His club career continued to flourish at Mahindra United as he established himself as the first choice keeper there and kept his place even with the return of experienced goalkeeper Sandip Nandy from injury. Subhasish won the Durand Cup and IFA Shield with the Mumbai club in 2008 and was very consistent in the I-League also.
Mahindra’s disbandment last season saw Subhasish sign for I-League champions Dempo. The 24 year old hasn’t got much gametime on the international stage despite being a regular member of the national team squad during Bob Houghton’s tenure, but there is no doubt that in him India have a very good second choice goalkeeper.
Dempo
After Mahindra United disbanded he signed for Dempo S.C. in a big money move.
