Ivan Perišić (born 2 February 1989 in Split[1]) is a Croatian football player who plays as a midfielder for German Bundesliga club Borussia Dortmund.

Career

Aged only 17, Perišić received a large amount of interest from a number of clubs, including RSC Anderlecht, PSV Eindhoven, Ajax Amsterdam, Trabzonspor,[2] Hertha BSC[3] and Hamburger SV,[4] before he eventually signed for French club FC Sochaux. He moved to France from Hajduk Split. In Split he was called by some journalists "the new Asanović" - a famous Croatian midfielder who also played in France.[5] From 2007 till January 2009 he played for FC Sochaux.

In 2009 he was on loan for half a season to KSV Roeselare, a team in the Belgian first league.[6]

On 26 August 2009 Club Brugge signed Perišić from FC Sochaux for 250,000 Euros and on a three-year deal.[7] Belgian football critics predict a bright future for the 20 year old. In the 2010–2011 season, Perišić was the top scorer of the Belgian Jupiler Pro League with 22 goals for Club Brugge, and was elected Player of the Year in Belgium.[8]

On 23 May 2011, Perišić signed a five year contract to play for Borussia Dortmund. It is believed he transferred for 5 million euros.[9] He made his debut for the club in their 3-1 home victory over HSV on 5 August coming on for Chris Löwe in the 76th minute.[10] During a Champions League match on 13 September 2011, he scored a late equaliser with a volley from 20 yards against Arsenal F.C. after coming on as a substitute in the 69th minute. On 14 October he scored the first goal in a 2-0 win against Werder Bremen, a match in which he was later sent of for a second bookable offence.

International career

Perišić has appeared internationally for the Croatian national Under 17, Under 18 and Under 21 teams.[11] He participated in the 2011 UEFA European Under-21 Football Championship qualification for Croatia, where he scored 2 goals. On 26 January 2011, as a 21-year old, he was selected for the first time for the national team of Croatia. Since then he has received regular call-ups.
