The Andalusian Patio in Córdoba, Spain.

A patio /[invalid input: 'icon']ˈpæti./ (Template:Lang-es 'courtyard', 'forecourt', 'yard') is an outdoor space generally used for dining or recreation that adjoins a residence and is typically paved. It may refer to a roofless inner courtyard of the sort found in Spanish-style dwellings or a paved area between a residence and a garden.

Patios are typically made of durable surfaces such as bricks, tile, or natural paving stones.

International terms

In Australia and India the word patio is often used to mean any kind of outdoor balcony or verandah.

In Iran the Persian term used for patio is hayat khalvat which translates to 'a small quiet and private yard,' and is usually a courtyard within the dwelling or walled within the property, for women's privacy without hijab.

In Oulu, Finland, 'patio' means a furnished drinking area-compound outside of a pub or restaurant. In other parts of Finland these areas are usually called a 'terrace.'
