Song |
"Call Me Maybe" is a song by Canadian singer-songwriter Carly Rae Jepsen. It was released on September 20, 2011 as the lead single from her first extended play, Curiosity. The single's commercial success in Canada has made Jepsen only the fourth Canadian artist to have a song top the chart.[1]
Background
The song was teased by Jepsen when she tweeted a video of her rehearsing the song along with a snippet on August 23, 2011.[2] It was officially released on September 20, 2011. The song was written by Carly Rae Jepsen, Tavish Crowe, and Josh Ramsay, and produced by the latter.[3] It was released worldwide on iTunes, while the song reached the Top 50 in United Kingdom, Sweden, Ireland, Chile, Mexico, Argentina, Ecuador, Brazil, Australia and New Zealand. But her international label eliminated the song in February, except in Canada and United States, in the latter the song reached the Top 10.
Chart performance
The song peaked at number one in Canada, and as of January 18, 2012, the song was certified Platinum in Canada with over 80,000 singles sold.[4] For the week of February 11, 2012, the song hit number one on the Canadian Hot 100, making it only the third time a Canadian artist has topped the new chart.[citation needed] The song stayed at the apex of the chart for 3 weeks as of March 10, 2012 and has been certified 2x platinum, representing 160,000 in digital sales.
In the United States, the song debuted on the Billboard Hot 100 at number thirty-eight on the issue dated March 10, 2012, selling 80,000 in digital sales that week.
Music video
The music video for the song was released to VEVO on December 9, 2011. The video begins with Jepsen spying on her neighbour while he's working on his lawn. She then rehearses with her band in her garage and her bandmates push her to go wash her car. She tries to grab her neighbour's attention with various poses only to fall from the hood of her car. The neighbour helps her up, then watches the band practice. As Jepsen turns to write down her number, she sees her neighbour pass one of her bandmates his number, indicating he is gay.
Sensations
American pop singer, Selena Gomez tweeted about the song, that the reason of her boyfriend, Justin Bieber's smile is because of the song. Then on February 18, 2012, a video spoof was posted on YouTube, under the account CarlosPenaTV, which is owned by Big Time Rush member, Carlos Pena, Jr. The video includes Justin Bieber, Selena Gomez, Ashley Tisdale, Alfredo Flores, Carlos Pena, Jr., Samantha Droke, Martin Johnson, Logan Henderson, Kendall Schmidt, Dustin Belt, Moisés Arias, Matéo Arias, and Kimberley Crossman. Days after the video was uploaded, it was trending on Twitter. With over 13 million views the video spoof has more views than the original music video. [5]
