Violet Jane Wood (née Hodges; 2 September 1899 - 29 February 2012) was a British supercenterian who was the oldest person in the United Kingdom, for almost a year before her death at the age of 112 years 180 days.

Life

Wood was married to Harry for 62 years until he died aged 92. Her sisters Bertha and Marjorie lived to the ages of 106 and 99 respectively.[1] She drove a car until she was 80 years old, and has worked on the farm all of her life.[2] She has one son named David who is 87 years old.[3] [1][2][4][5]

She credits her longevity to eating toast and pickles.[1]

Records

  • On 12 March 2011 Margaret Fish died five days after her 112th birthday, meaning that Violet Wood aged 111 years 191 days became the oldest living person in the United Kingdom. She was succeeded by Grace Jones, who is the last person in the UK born in the 1800s.
