John Wood Fishburne (1868-1937) Virginia Congressman and cousin to Congressmen Fontaine Maury Maverick and James Luther Slayden of Texas. All three of these men are related to the oceanographer, Matthew Fontaine Maury of Virginia.
Fishburne was a Representative from Virginia; born near Albemarle County, Charlottesville, Virginia on March 8, 1868; attended Pantops Academy, near Charlottesville, Va., and Washington and Lee University in Lexington, Virginia.
He taught at the Fishburne Military Academy in Waynesboro, Virginia, in 1886 and 1887; was graduated from the law department of the University of Virginia at Charlottesville in 1890; was admitted to the bar the same year and commenced practice in Charlottesville; also engaged in agricultural pursuits; served in the Virginia House of Delegates 1895-1897; member of the Virginia State Library Board 1904-1913; appointed judge of the eighth judicial circuit in 1913; subsequently elected by the legislature and served from 1913 until his resignation in 1930; elected as a Democrat to the 72nd United States Congress (March 4, 1931-March 3, 1933); was not a candidate for renomination in 1932; resumed the practice of law; died in Ivy Depot, near Charlottesville, June 24, 1937; interment in Riverview Cemetery, Charlottesville, Virginia.
