Introduction

Dr. Gloria Bromell Tinubu is an applied economist, educator, and public servant. She has 34 years of experience as an economist and community leader and is currently running for Congress in South Carolina's 7th Congressional District. She pursued a Master's degree in Agricultural Economics in order to address the problems associated with clouded title property known as heirs property which today continues to plague her hometown and many other rural communities. Her study was the first scientific documentation and measurement of the problem in South Carolina. Her findings were published in Progressive Farmer (1978), carried by many local newspapers throughout the State, and submitted to the South Carolina Legislature. Bromell Tinubu would later return to Clemson University to earn a Ph.D. in Applied Economics and conduct research on the financial stability of South Carolina’s public water systems. Bromell Tinubu is the first African American woman to earn a MS in Agricultural Economics (Dec. 1977) and the first African American, woman or man, to earn a PhD in Applied Economics (Aug. 1986) at Clemson University.

Early Life

Bromell Tinubu was born in Brookgreen Gardens, located in Murrells Inlet, South Carolina, in 1953. She is the 7th of 8 children born to Beatrice and Charlie Bromell of Plantersville, South Carolina who were determined that their children would receive the high school education they never had. At the age of four, her family moved to her parents’ hometown, Plantersville, located in Georgetown County, South Carolina. Her family would later move to Milton Hall Plantation also located in Plantersville, where she spent her teenage years.

Education

Bromell Tinubu attended Plantersville Elementary School and graduated from Choppee High School in 1971. She was salutatorian and president of her graduating class. The first in her family to go to college, she attended the University of South Carolina in Columbia for her freshman year as a Herbert Lehman Scholar. She transferred to Howard University where she earned a bachelor's degree in Fine Arts with honors in 1974. She received her Master's in Agricultural Economics in 1977 and her Ph.D. in Applied Economics in 1986, both from Clemson University in Clemson, South Carolina.

Career

Bromell Tinubu is currently a teaching associate in the College of Business Administration at Coastal Carolina University in Conway, South Carolina. She is also Chair & CEO of Bromell Tinubu Group, LLC, a family business that specializes in community economic development.

She began her teaching career at her former high school in 1974 and in higher education as a professor of economics in 1986 at Spelman College (Atlanta, Georgia) where she earned tenure in 1992. Her past leadership positions include State Representative (HD-60 Georgia General Assembly) , President of Barber-Scotia College , Chair of the Economics Department at Spelman College, member of the Georgia Board of Education, member of the Atlanta City Council, Atlanta mayoral candidate, member of the City of Atlanta Board of Ethics, Spelman College Faculty Representative to the Board of Trustees, member of the Commission for the Future of Clemson University, and CEO of Atlanta Cooperative Development Corporation, a city-created entity she founded in 1996. As a state representative, she was a member of the Intergovernmental Affairs, Interstate Cooperation, and Small Business and Job Creation committees. She is a member of the 1996 class of Leadership Atlanta and was appointed Associate of the Thurmond Institute of Government and Public Affairs at Clemson University in 1987.

Awards and Recognition

Bromell Tinubu has received numerous honors and awards for her community and public service. She has been listed among Who’s Who in Black Atlanta (2001, 2003), Atlanta Business League’s 100 Most Influential Black Women (1996, 1997, 2001, 2002, 2003), Atlanta Business Chronicle’s Most Influential Georgians (2001), and Essence Magazine's 25 Women Who are Shaping the World (2005). She received Spelman College’s Fannie Lou Hamer Community Service Award (1998) and the college's Community Service and Public Policy Award (2000). She is also a recipient of the Winnie Mandela Humanitarian Award for Public Service (2001).

Personal Life

In 1976, Bromell Tinubu married Soji Tinubu, a Nigerian-born U.S. citizen who is also a graduate of Clemson University with a Master’s degree in civil engineering. An accomplished professional engineer with 37 years of experience in program and contract management, project management, construction management, engineering design, and project controls, Mr. Tinubu currently serves as Chief Engineer to the largest transit project in North America. They have four children and two grandchildren.
