BTOLA Pty Ltd reads like a classic advertorial

AfD or not to AfD? A question about bio-fuel on the Ref Desk caused me to come across the above article which read to me like a classic advertorial. When Googling for more info on them I found that this appears to be a paid-for-article: “Hi. I can help you. I wrote article about Poltava en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ Poltava, and Alwaleed Almarzooqi en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ Alwaleed_Almarzooqi Also my last project is about BTOLA company en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BTOLA_Pty_Ltd” -emphasise mine. Laura Marano

I recently added some additional info in regards to the Biography of actress Laura Marano. The source of this addition came from a LISTED source (IMD: Internet Movie Database) in the References tag that usually follows all Wikipedia articles, but yet the entry was deleted by a site administrator claiming it was a "pooly referenced source". I know Wikipedia prides itself on accuracy of all sources and facts, but I don't understand how a listed source can be sited as "poor" if it's part of the page's list of references. Trust me, I'm not offended as I aware any changes will be verified by the site, but could someone please clarify how a listed source can be sited as "poor"? Sounds a little hypocritical to me. Thank you. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Dmac3014 (talkcontribs) 02:17, 24 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

We don't consider the IMDb to meet our standards of a reliable source, since much of the modern-day content, in particular, is contributed by the subjects themselves: performers, film companies, etc. (I oughta know; I've got an entry in there, as does my daughter.) --Orange Mike | Talk 02:25, 24 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
IMDb is an external link and not a reliable source in Laura Marano. There are differences in the requirements. IMDb comes up so often that we have a redirect to information about it: WP:IMDB. PrimeHunter (talk) 04:13, 24 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

    Name display issue

Hello! I am a teacher and have created a Wikipedia Project for my students. I am trying to assign peer reviewers from the class for each others articles. Only some of the students names are displayed when I select "assign reviewers". Why aren't the remainder of the students on the class list showing up? Thanks for all help! can you cut the monster tables ?

Hi - a problem I've just found again as in many wiki comparison pages is monster tables with too many rows and columns so I have to keep scrolling left and right and up and down to try to make sense of them - and then give up because it's too hard.

One I looked at just today [[1]] has 3 tables and the last one is just huge and horrid and provoked this contact. If you look at it, many of the cells are one word in a much bigger box, so the table is a very wasteful, ineffective and inefficient way of displaying useful information to the reader if they can't make much sense of it in a 19 column by 34 row table - if I shrink it to see the whole table on one screen the text is too small to be useful and all I see are masses of color with tiny print and mostly wasted space.

Could you therefore look at some guidelines for the use of such comparison tables - e.g. make it fit on one screen (especially the width/number of columns) with a readable font size, or break it up into multiple tables with maybe repeating headers every 15 rows or so - so the information becomes useable rather than totally alienating ?

Thanks if you would, as a fellow volunteer I much appreciate the wonderful resource you provide and support, Best Wishes, David — Preceding unsigned comment added by 110.174.58.10 (talk) 05:10, 24 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Edit automatically removed, should I re-post?

Hello. the information I added to Comparison of DNS blacklists was legitimate and well formatted. The automated system removed it though. How can I add the information again without the system removing it? I'm afraid if I try again with the same information, the system might ban me or something. The entry to be added was for the dnsbl mailer.mobi, info can be found at www.mailer.mobi. Can you please help? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 122.148.145.149 (talk) 07:21, 24 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

You could make the edit again; ClueBot won't revert to itself. I don't know if your edit was okay for the article in question (it's late here and I just don't feel like reading much right now). If you add the information again and it's not okay, someone else will remove it. You wouldn't get blocked for two "bad" edits (especially since they're good faith), and ClueBot cannot block you. - Purplewowies (talk) 07:43, 24 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

    Where are deleted articles?

How can I get the text of deleted articles?

This includes merged articles (whose content is promptly deleted after the merge).

I am getting the impression that WP is the bookburners' wet dream: No text copies remain after the book burning. OlavN (talk) 09:46, 24 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Only Admins can see the text of deleted articles; but on request, they will usually userfy a particular deleted article for you to work on it. --ColinFine (talk) 10:44, 24 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
See Category:Wikipedia administrators who will provide copies of deleted articles. Dru of Id (talk) 12:42, 24 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Disappointingly, most deleted articles consist of "nj; afnjk;a" or "My brother eats poo" or "The Scrotums are the best band currently performing at the Dog and Duck in Camden High Street" or adverts for Joe's Ice Cream Parlour, or copypaste of entire websites (usually in broken English). If you want the content of a deleted article, just drop me a note of the name and I'll email it to you, unless it was deleted as a copyright violation. --Elen of the Roads (talk) 13:14, 24 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
If there are articles where the content was merged from one article into another and the original article was deleted, there is a potential problem there from an attribution standpoint. If the article was merged and the original article was redirected then all the original text is in the history of the redirect. GB fan 16:14, 24 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hidden category for articles containing living people

I know we have a hidden category for articles that include living people where those people aren't the main subject of the article. I've used the category before but I can't seem to find it today. Cloveapple (talk) 17:05, 24 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Are you refering to Category:Biography articles of living people on talk pages? Category:Hidden categories doesn't contain any with 'living' that seem to be what you're referencing, or it may have been merged. Dru of Id (talk) 17:27, 24 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
No, it wasn't that category. It was for situations where a living person was a secondary focus in the article. Maybe it doesn't exist anymore. Cloveapple (talk) 19:42, 24 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Template {{BLP}} may be added to the talk pages of BLPs and other articles that secondarily contain material about living persons. However, that template does not use a hidden category. -- Uzma Gamal (talk) 08:16, 25 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
There is also {{BLP others}}. It doesn't add a category but like all templates, uses can be found at Special:WhatLinksHere/Template:BLP others. PrimeHunter (talk) 12:45, 25 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

    Using non-WP narrative style

I would like to use language that is in a narrative style derived from the source of the item being described. This would obviously violate WP's style guide, and I was wondering if there was a 'tag' or 'flag' that I could add, something like: "WARNING: the following uses narrative which does not conform to Wikipedia's Style Guideline, and is intended...". Of course the terms and phrases could be in quotes, but this would quickly become annoying to the reader and look messy, and the narrative would be an amalgam rather than citable quotes. E.g.: nefarious nabob or bombastic bamboozler used to describe a character, using obscure terms, etc. -- (This is for an article on 'Upsidaisium' relating to 'Rocky & Bullwinkle') ~Eric F 184.76.225.106 (talk) 19:56, 24 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

That trick never works! We take our Manual of Style fairly seriously, and any such entry, however well-intentioned, would be deleted posthaste. --Orange Mike | Talk 20:57, 24 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
    Okay. (Dagnabbit) ~Eric F 184.76.225.106 (talk) 23:39, 24 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Such an article likely would be tagged with a template from Wikipedia:Template messages/Cleanup and someone eventually would get around to acting on the tag. Also, there is an upsidaisium article. -- Uzma Gamal (talk) 07:25, 25 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, that is the article that I'm in the process of editing. Anyway ... it was just a thought (I'll figure out a way of doing this within WP style guide, etc.) -- Assistance on page appreciated.

    Page layout problem

Hi, at Katakana, there is, a short way down the page, a grid titled "Katakana base characters". According to the source code (and, I believe, the original author's intention), this should be adjacent and to the right of the heading "Language-independent script". However, in IE (IE9 at least), it is incorrectly shunted down the page so it is adjacent and to the right of the text in the next section, "Japanese syllabary and orthography". Does anyone know how to fix this in a way that will be friendly for all the significant browsers? 86.177.107.165 (talk) 20:43, 24 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Fixed in [2]. However, this solution with {{stack begin}} reserves the same width for the three boxes to the right and the infobox is wider, so there is some blank space to the left of the two below boxes. PrimeHunter (talk) 21:31, 24 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, it's a shame about that blank space, but I guess at least the table now appears in the intended place. I appreciate your help with this. 86.177.107.165 (talk) 21:40, 24 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

    Policy/guideline query

Is anyone aware of whether there is a policy or guideline against a pattern of editing across a large number of articles which is intended to systematically push a certain POV? I seem to remember reading such a policy, which I thought was headed something like 'Campaigning edits', last year but am unable to locate it now. Many thanks.Rangoon11 (talk) 20:45, 24 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

If they are trying to push a point-of-view, then wouldn't that fall under the WP:NPOV policy? RudolfRed (talk) 21:10, 24 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I'm not sure. This is a situation where a single edit forming part of the campaign may appear reasonable, but from the series of edits viewed as a whole - e.g. the same edit done across thousands of articles - it is clear that a POV is being pushed. An example would be the addition of 'European Union' to the infobox of companies based in EU countries. This is non-standard, we generally just have Town/City + Sovereign state. Done once in a single article it may look innocuous, done in a thousand articles in turn it is clear that a POV is being pushed in a form of campaign, the edits are being done purely to emphasise the status of the EU (this is just an example by the way, I have not seen anyone pursuing such a campaign).
I seem to recall reading something which dealt with this.Rangoon11 (talk) 23:53, 24 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Are you referring to efforts to include an Environmental Record section in policymaker, corporation, and organization articles? -- Uzma Gamal (talk) 07:15, 25 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
No, that is pretty standard and isn't something I was referring to.Rangoon11 (talk) 15:12, 25 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

    X!'s Edit Counter

Not sure if this is the right place to post this but I wanted to make others aware that this edit counter isn't working right. When you go to it you get a "replication lag" message. Now I am used to seeing that and it usually goes away after a few hours but it is now over 5 days that it has been there. I can't remember the username of the editor who took this counter over after soxred retired so if any of you can notify them that would be most appreciated. Done. Is there reason to leave a redirect if Smallville is changed to the new name? PrimeHunter (talk) 23:43, 24 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
It is because of my error in typing the file's name. I don't know if you watched the show before, but after 10 seasons on television, Smallville will return as a comic book series titled Smallville Season 11. I mistyped the file as Season 8 image instead of Season 11. I just don't want to make people thhought that's a season 8 image.--NeoBatfreak (talk) 23:55, 24 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Finding the ID# for Template:British pathe

How do you do it? An example. In Gemini 6A one of the external links is {{british pathe|41116| Color newsreel footage documenting the cancelled mission of October 1965}} That links to this Pathe page but I do not find anything on that page that has the ID# 41116. 108.54.27.24 (talk) 00:15, 25 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

That film ID looks wrong or they are two copies of it on the site. This seems to be one that works for it. 182203 or 1822.03
It is called film id in the bottom right of the info box below the film.--Canoe1967 (talk) 00:36, 25 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. It's good to know that something on the page can be used as the ID and it will work, but there's still a discrepancy. Any article I check using this template, the Film ID used in the template is not the film ID in the place you point out on the page. Another example: Autoland has in its external links {{british pathe|45284| BOAC VC10 Automatic Landing (1968)}} which when clicked on goes to this page where the film ID to get there is not on the page. 108.54.27.24 (talk) 03:52, 25 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

If they are working, there must be a way to do it with the template. You may have to ask at the reference desk, and see if the template docs can be fixed to make it more clear.--Canoe1967 (talk) 18:02, 25 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

    Request for Permissions-?

I am interested in gaining the user flag reviewer, but it has apparently been removed as a community standard. Does this mean I can ask a passing administrator for the flag, considering almost all my time on project has been fighting vandalism at Special:RecentChanges,or does it mean it is just dead as a permission and no one is willing to grant it? Thank you for considering my question. Cheers, An Illusive Man (Contact) 02:05, 25 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

See Wikipedia:User access levels#Reviewer and Wikipedia:Reviewing#Becoming a reviewer. It's still technically possible to assign the reviewer flag but it has no effect. I remember a case where somebody kept asking for it until an admin apparently decided it was easier to give it than to keep explaining why it was pointless. So I guess it depends how much time you will spend bugging admins. PrimeHunter (talk) 02:48, 25 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
It's not necessarily pointless, because of WP:Pending changes, which looks likely to result in reviewer status being resurrected. Just in case any admins think it is harmless to give it out to all-and-sundry. FormerIP (talk) 02:54, 25 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

    Band article request

I wanted to include a friend's photo and biography of her and the band she is the lead singer in. She is a popular rising star in my country Australia and I would like her and the band recognized world wide. I was looking at your photo and bio page and found all the legal jargon far too complicated. I will be acting on behalf of her and her band and I have full permission to present any photos I have in my possession and information of this young lady friend of mine and the band who I am promoting voluntarily without any charges. I am wondering if there is any simpler way I can submit the photo and information without going into all the red tape under the sun such as a written statement from the band releasing any photos that I submit and any information for publication. — Preceding unsigned comment added by TreziseLeonardBarry (talkcontribs) 05:02, 25 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Be sure you have permission for reuse of the photo(s) by anyone for anything including commercial use and modification; permission for use only on Wikipedia is not enough. Unable to upload scans from a magazine to list as references

    File:1998_Miss_Universe_Hawaii_Official_Program.pdf

Hi there. I cannot figure out how to upload scanned articles from a magazine onto the April Masini article page as references. I've pasted below what I've managed to do so far... But I am so afraid I'll mess things up if I try anything more. If you visit my sandbox you will see what I am attempting to do (basically revise paragraphs of the article and add the supporting references I have in the sandbox.) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Jennyspencer/sandbox Is there anyone who can please help me? For the Imi Loa Magazine you simply cite the magazine as you did in the footnote above. If the other pdfs are from published reliable sources, you cite them similarly; if they are not from published reliable sources, uploading them will not make them acceptable. In any case there is no rationale for using them as non-free scans in an article. (I linked to your pdfs because there no rationale to use them here either.) —teb728 t c 00:57, 26 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Oh, I see you linked to the uploads in your footnote; you would take those out thus:

Moreover, there's no need for all references to be to things online. If you have a reliable printed source, it's fine for that to be used — indeed, it's likely better, since websites can change far easier than print sources. If your reliable print source has information that's not found online, it's okay for Wikipedia to be the first website to publish the information — but remember, only if it's been published first in print. If I agree with a fact, and think everyone else does...

If I agree with a fact, and think everyone else does, is it still OK for me to remove it if it's not sourced? For example, if I see an article that says

Many opponents to Nazism say it is detrimental to society because they are controlled by aliens,[1][2][3] but Nazi propaganda posters claimed that research by This,[4] That,[5] and Also-This[6] has suggested otherwise. Some people however, say that even if Nazis are not controlled by aliens, it is may be still possible for them to be detrimental to society.[citation needed]

I know that I can remove the last sentence if I disagree with it, because there is not reference to support the claim that "some people however, say that even if...", and it's obviously a product of original research. So I know I can remove the last sentence if I did disagree with it, or did know someone else who disagreed with it. But the question I'm here to ask is that IF I agreed with the last sentence, and I don't know anyone who disagreed with it, can I still remove it because I don't want it on the article, say for some other reason? I never knew whether or not it's OK, so I really want to find out. DontClickMeName talkcontributions 07:28, 26 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Every statement in an article has to be verified (there would still be people saying they were benefical to society, whether there were aliens involved or not) but the phrase "Some people say..." is a weasel phrase, which are not to be used in articles. Hope this helps! AndieM13 (Leave a message!) 09:46, 26 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Not quite... every statement must be verifiable... not necessarily verified. This is a subtle but important distinction. A reliable source must exist... but we are not required to cite that source in the article unless it is "challenged or likely to be challenged". I would definitely say that the example given is "likely to be challenged", so a citation would be required in that case... but not in others.
As to the broader issue... Are you allowed to remove verifiable but problematic information from an article? Yes. There are lots of reasons to remove information other than verifiability... the material in question could give undue weight to a fringe theory for example. Verifiability does not guarantee inclusion.
Should you remove verifiable information from an article? Sometimes yes, sometimes no... that really depends on the specifics of the situation, and can only be determined on a case by case basis. That said, in most cases there are better ways to deal with problematic material than removal (See: WP:FIXTHEPROBLEM for more details). Blueboar (talk) 13:15, 26 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
So I guess I can remove it, and add and edit summary "Removed last sentence. If it was sourced it'd belong on this article, but because it's not verifiable, I'm removing it even though we all agree with its claim" The article can thus be shortened, giving the same information using less lines.

Many opponents to Nazism say it is detrimental to society because they are controlled by aliens,[1][2][3] but Nazi propaganda posters claimed that research by This,[4] That,[5] and Also-This[6] has suggested otherwise.

You would "move" the page: see WP:SYMUD But if you move User:Evangonzalez1/sandbox now, it will almost certainly get deleted as it contains no references and does not explain why the word is notable. In fact I very much doubt that the word VYQX merits a Wikipedia article: see WP:NEOLOGISM. It is possible that the website is notable, but only if it has been written about by independent reliable sources.

I initially moved Henry Knighton to Knighton's Chronicon. However I can NOT get their correct talk pages to follow their correct articles. Knighton's Chronicon talk page is now Henry Knighton talk page. Can someone correct this problem for me so that Talk: Knighton's Chronicon is on the Knighton's Chronicon and visa versa?--Doug Coldwell talk 11:05, 26 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Your problem was that Talk:KC still existed, so you couldn't move Talk:HK over it; one solution would have been to add {{db-move}} to Talk:KC and explained your reasoning at Talk:HK. I've deleted Talk:KC and moved Talk:HK to that title without leaving a redirect, so there's currently no page of any sort named Talk:HK. Is this what you wanted? If not, please tell me at my talk page that I misunderstood; spell out precisely what you want to happen, so that I don't make more mistakes. Nyttend (talk) 11:56, 26 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

    Inversion in a sphere

After two months, I have adapted an article, 'Inversion in a sphere', so that it is ready for inclusion in Wikipedia. Apparently, I have moved it, but it was immediately deleted by Michel Grenier. He says that he has sent me mail, but I can't fnd it!

How do I find what is the problem with my article? 12:47, 26 March 2012 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Bparslow (talkcontribs)

Should be in whatever email account you have down at the bottom of the first page in your preferences. Sort of odd that it got delete with a g6 reason. (page that needs to be deleted to merge histories, reverse a redirect, or perform other non-controversial technical tasks).Naraht (talk) 12:57, 26 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Bparslow, you made a capitalisation error; all Wikipedia page titles are case-sensitive, so User:Bparslow/sandbox and User:Bparslow/Sandbox are not the same page. You linked "sandbox" when you meant to link "Sandbox". The problem with your article was the name itself: you moved the sandbox so that it became an article — any page whose name is preceded by "User:" is in userspace, but if you remove "User:" from the page name, our software thinks that it's an article, and "Bparslow/sandbox" isn't the right name for an article. Someone else moved Bparslow/sandbox to User:Bparslow/Sandbox, and it's at that last page where you can find what you wrote; it's never been deleted. The other pages got deleted because they were essentially redirects to each other, which isn't a good thing. One more thing to remember: you're not in trouble. When I say "problem", I mean "problem from a technical point of view"; I don't mean that you're being a problem. Nyttend (talk) 13:09, 26 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
If you can't see the email, you could post a message at User talk:Michael Greiner explaining that your email is not working, and asking him to post on your talk page instead. Also, note that an article that is similar to the draft in User:Bparslow/Sandbox is likely to be deleted because it is written like a textbook, not like an encyclopedia entry, and Wikipedia is not a textbook. Gandalf61 (talk) 13:22, 26 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
(edit conflict) More details: You moved it from User:Bparslow/sandbox to Bparslow/sandbox which is in the mainspace encyclopedia. A move automatically creates a redirect at the old title, User:Bparslow/sandbox. Then you moved this redirect (and nothing else) to the title Inversion in a sphere. If you think you saw your article at Inversion in a sphere then you actually saw it at the redirect target Bparslow/sandbox. User:AJCham moved Bparslow/sandbox (which definitely did not belong at that title) to User:Bparslow/Sandbox. Michael Greiner cleaned up by deleting the redirects (and nothing else) at Bparslow/sandbox and Inversion in a sphere. Your actual article was never deleted and is still at User:Bparslow/Sandbox. However, the formatting and style is unsuited for a Wikipedia article. I don't know why User:Michael Greiner would contact you by email. Perhaps you started by sending him an email. Communication between users is usually done via their talk pages. See Help:Using talk pages. PrimeHunter (talk) 13:25, 26 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
He did contact me first by email. My response (also via the E-mail this user function) was that all I did was delete the redirects, that his content was available at his sandbox and that he should contract users on their user talk pages. (all as noted by Primehunter) --Michael Greiner 16:15, 26 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Bparslow, my apologies for the confusion - I moved your page back into userspace as it was at in improper title in article space and all indications were that it was still in the draft stage. I thought I had posted a message on your talk page explaining the situation, and also the issues raised by PrimeHunter, but it would seem I negelcted to save it. My fault for editing late at night I suppose. AJCham 19:23, 26 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Until I tried to produce an article for Wikipedia, I regarded myself as reasonably intelligent, but the hoops that Wikipedia produce completely defeat me. I have no idea where Bparslow/Sandbox came from, or how I got 'user ' in front of 'Inversion in a Sphere' ('in' not 'of' notice). Why does Wikipedia make it so difficult for contributors? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Bparslow (talkcontribs) 22:57, 26 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

A lot of things seem difficult the first time you have to do them. The move form Special:MovePage/User:Bparslow/Sandbox starts by writing the existing name, "User" and "Bparslow/Sandbox". This means it as a sandbox (see Sandbox (software development) for the general concept) for your user account. You would have to change both names in the move form, to "Article" and "Inversion in a sphere". But as mentioned, the current page is not suited. It is written as a paper and not a Wikipedia article. It even says "this paper" and not "this article". It is also badly misformatted. It would still look the same as an article until somebody fixed the formatting. Two quick tips: Leading spaces cause grey boxes and should usually be avoided, and see Help:Section for how to make section headings. And are you aware that Wikipedia editors only get credit in the page history? If you write a Wikipedia article then it will not show your name, and others can edit the article. If you still want to try then see Wikipedia:Your first article and some of the links there. PrimeHunter (talk) 00:45, 27 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Re did but: What is this, and how do I do it? This sandbox is in the article namespace. Either move this page into your userspace, or remove the This sandbox is in the Wikipedia namespace. Either move this page into your userspace, or remove the {{User sandbox}} template. template.

Augmentation of existing page "Robert Hughes - Swimmer"

I was recently involved in the research for a book entitled "Bob Hughes - The True Story of a Legendary Waterman", and in doing so, discovered remarkable facts about this Olympic athlete that were not included in the Wikipedia page about him. I have made several attempts to augment the page, and my contributions have been removed, repeatedly, by the same User (Dori ☾Talk ⁘ Contribs☽ as she assumes my contribution have been a conflict of interest (which they have not).

The page had been grievously lacking in the achievements of this 2 time Olympian and World Record holder, and it has been my intention to complete the information previously listed on the page...in no way embellishing the facts beyond that of any other similar athlete featured in Wikipedia. It is not my intention to exaggerate or advertise. All facts contributed by myself have been verified with links to other Wikipedia pages and outside sources (including the USC and USA Waterpolo websites), and a reference to the book recently published.

As per Wikipedia protocol, I have made a polite attempt to contact this User User:DoriSmith to resolve the issue, but have not had the courtesy of a reply. In her hasty removal of, and thinly veiled sarcastic messages to me, it almost appears she has made it her sole objective to vandalize my contributions.

Please help! This is an 80 year old Olympic Athlete who has recently been chosen to be inducted into the USC HAll of Fame, and it would be heartbreaking to wait until he is dead before proper credit is given to his achievements.

Please make sure that any material you wish to add is coming from reliable sources, a category which does not include other Wikipedia article, and shows a neutral point-of-view (something which may not be found in a book with a smarmy title like Bob Hughes - The True Story of a Legendary Waterman. We need good, solid verifiable sources for our articles. Also note that we are not here to glorify (or disparage) the subjects of our articles, and any messages which seem more concerned about making the subject look good than about making sure the asserted facts are reliably sourced and verifiable will hinder your efforts. --Orange Mike | Talk 17:00, 26 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
However, somewhat disagreeing with my grumpy orange colleague here :) if your book is well researched and published by a reputable publisher, by all means use it (not the primary research) to cite the facts in neutral language. Elen of the Roads (talk) 21:28, 26 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

The book is probably not be a valid reference per Wikipedia policies. The book seems to be self-published, not published by a mainstream company. I say this based on Artfuldagger publishing's website. To ensure the reliability of facts, we place restrictions on what sources can be used as references.
I'm not clear of your relation with Artfuldagger publishing, but if you have any commercial relationship with the firm, your user name probably violates Wikipedia:Username policy, and you should have it changed.

If the reason for the deletion or redirection of the article about the person was a lack of sources establishing notability, per WP:N or related guidelines, I think that it's obviously been determined that the person isn't "notable enough to have an article in Wikipedia". More to the point of what WP:N says: source material doesn't ever disappear. If someone has indepth writing in reliable sources which is in existance today, that writing cannot unhappen. Once a journalist, author, or researcher, etc. publishes something, that event cannot simply get undone, and since a person's notability is judged at Wikipedia by examining what journalists, authors, or researchers, etc. have written about them, notability does not go away. --Jayron32 18:51, 26 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I don't know if you have rules or guidelines on it, but you may find it easiest to copy/paste the entire text from an existing article on a journalist to your 'sandbox' and then just change the details to match yours. I don't know if they have their own 'info box' template. I found it easier to learn from example that way as opposed to reading the how-to and starting from scratch. You should still read the 'your first article' page, as well as the linked pages there. There are certain things like 'categories' that shouldn't be used in sandboxes, etc. so just delete all but the basics until you get sorted.--Canoe1967 (talk) 18:01, 26 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
That is extremely poor advice - you must not copy-and-paste content from another Wikipedia article like that, unless it is attributed - and if you are doing this as an assignment, USI may consider it plagiarism. But why would this help, anyway? Look at the way Wikipedia biographies in general are written, then write in your own words, based on the sources you have, with the aim of producing something that is informative, to the point, and written in encyclopaedic language. Better idea is to have multiple browser 'tabs' open to various sources etc. (Read a lot of stuff, put it in your own words, condense, go back to your sources to make sure you did it right.) ~Eric F 184.76.225.106 (talk) 19:08, 26 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I think I was misunderstood. I meant delete all the info, but just keep the infobox and format. The page would be blank as to information, but in a form the same as other BLP. Then it would be just a matter of filling in the blanks. Are there 'blank' templates for BLPs and other types of articles etc? If there aren't these may be easier for newer editors to learn from. They could have inline wikilinks to pages such as citing, POV, etc, as well as verbose how-to notes. This may also help to standardize articles in wikipedia as well.--Canoe1967 (talk) 19:22, 26 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

not sure I understand deletion process

The problem is with Pre-melter. Several attempts have been made- & denied- for this page to be created, then lo!, it appears. Another user put a delete notice on it, but this appeared not to have been transcluded & the article was not listed on the pages to b deleted log. replaced it, following the instructions, ie placing {{subst:.... on the page. Still no result. The page in question is basically an incomprehensible bit of promotion for some bit of pizza-making machinery, full of spam links & written by a native speaker of jargo. I did fairly savage copy edit on it, removing inline links to youtube promotions & putting in a bit of plain english: the page creator has revisited the page & restored it to it's previous state, and I do mean state. Creator has no editing history apart from this bit of probable spam. What's the form?TheLongTone (talk) 18:35, 26 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

The page is correctly marked for Proposed deletion, and is listed at Category:Proposed deletion as of 23 March 2012. An admin will consider the deletion on 30 March if nothing else happens before then. Two things could happen before then: if anyone removes the "proposed deletion" notice then you will have to take the article to Articles for deletion, or someone might tag the article for speedy deletion. -- John of Reading (talk) 19:08, 26 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

    WP:CIVIL. In most cases, I would say no. Calabe1992 20:34, 26 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
No, it's not a polite thing to say. But equally, it's not going to get the person who said it blocked if that's all they said. It's kind of a grey area in that respect - it's not like swearing at a teacher, more like swearing at another student in an undergrad lecture. It's not cool, but there isn't the mechanism that there was in school to keep the offender writing lines in detention. --Elen of the Roads (talk) 21:20, 26 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Any judgement like this is always going to be subjective. I've worked in places where I was criticised for not saying fuck like everybody else. Obviously it varies between cultures and between countries. Absolute views on it are just silly. HiLo48 (talk) 21:33, 26 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hghyux incorrectly tagged an article for deletion - basically just made a mistake - and was instantly dubbed "an ignorant American" by another editor. Hghyux apologised, but he naturally took offence, and an argument ensued when he asked for an apology and was ultimately told to fuck off. No action was taken, which is something of a disgrace. User:Shirt58 has already warned User:Bwilkins. But User:Hghyux has issues of their own. I'm concerned about User:Hghyux/Blocked where they threaten to "warn" and "report" users who they don't like if they ever comment on their user talk page for any reason. I understand their frustration but respectful interaction with these users may become necessary in the future and should not be met with such hostility. Dcoetzee 01:43, 27 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

    Cuban economic reforms

I'm surprised fact that there is still no article on the Cuban economic reforms (Cuban economic reform or Economic reforms in Cuba) from the last couple of years. The government’s goal is to have up to 40 percent of the island workforce of 5.2 million in non-state jobs by 2015. They probably deserve the attention of somebody with expertise in the area. I've added the article to the Requested articles, but would anybody be willing to create a stub? Thanks. 85.50.248.154 (talk) 23:21, 26 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

How to change a talk page to a regular, searchable page

I created the following page on March 19th: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia_talk:Articles_for_creation/Grow_Communications

It is still listed under "Wikipedia talk:Articles for creation/Grow Communications" and when i search for "Grow Communications" my contribution does not come up. What is the process and requirements for getting a page to go live so it can be seen by everyone? And how long does this typically take to happen? — Preceding unsigned comment added by GrowComm (talkcontribs) 23:33, 26 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

    Contributing from a Business

    Hello,

I have recently tried several times to get a Wikipedia account for David Gallaher. He is a knowledgeable and well respected member of the martial arts community and his knowledge on subjects such as heatlh and fitness are vast. However, prior to this account, after we attempt to create various articles or provide information in the account profile about David, the account is deleted citing reasons which essentially say that we are advertising David's Martial Arts school. This is not our intent; what we would like to know is how can we contribute to and create articles in a way that will not be considered advertising? It is difficult to separate the school or David's biographical information (one of the accounts was deleted citing that we were trying to promote David and in essence his school as well) from his articles because it is where his knowledge and training come from and how it remains applicable in every day life. How can we go about this?

Best Wishes, Synthia — Preceding unsigned comment added by Gungfuins (talkcontribs) 00:39, 27 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

You seem to have a WP:COI and thus it would not be possible to write such an article by yourself. Hghyux (talk to me)(talk to others) 00:43, 27 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
You could add him at Wikipedia:Requested articles/Biography/By profession#Boxers.2C martial artists and wrestlers, although there is no telling when it would be created. Any previously deleted article receives heightened scrutiny during attempts to recreate it. Dru of Id (talk) 00:56, 27 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
You've used account when you mean article. I'm presuming you mean the David Gallaher with the Gung Fu Institute of Fort Myers, Florida, which sets off alarm bells with your user name. For words to avoid, see Wikipedia:Wikipuffery. Dru of Id (talk) 01:10, 27 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
A good start would be to find the multiple independent reliable sources which discuss David Gallaher and which can establish hist notability. With those, it is possible to write an article about him, but everything in it must be referenced to reliable sources, and it must be written in a neutral tone, which is probably very difficult for you to do, because of your conflict of interest. Dru of Id's suggestion is probably the best one, but if you do the detective work and find the references that will make it easier for somebody disinterested to come along and write the article. If you can't find the references, then I'm afraid he is not currently notable by Wikipedia's criteria. --ColinFine (talk) 09:11, 27 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I have just had a pretty thorough search for reliable, independent sources. This (which I can't read in its entirety) is the only valid source I could find; on its own it isn't sufficient to prove notability. It may well be that Sifu Gallaher simply doesn't meet the notability standards. Yunshui  09:36, 27 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

    no references

My page http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Simon_Rice lacked references and was going to be deleted. i have put what i hope are appropriate references and external sources on. can you please confirm they are adequate and, if not, give a further indication of what is expected. Jumgrant (talk) 06:45, 27 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

No. The telegraph and FT reviews just mention him in passing. The Observer has a couple of sentences about him, and would be a useful reference in conjunction with others, but in my opinion it is not enough on its own. You need to find independent reliable sources which have written significantly about him in order to establish that he is notable.
Also, the references need to be inline, attached to the particular facts that are being stated: see WP:Referencing for beginners. Since this is a biography of a living person, every piece of information in it should be referenced to a published source. --ColinFine (talk) 09:22, 27 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Creating an article, unsure on title choice and if content can be seen as advertising

    Hi,

my name is Glenn Ivar Husom and I am part of a group in a course at the University of Oslo where we are tasked with masking an article for Wikipedie with high likelyhood of surviving.

My group has chosen the topic "Tracking of third party webtrackers"/"Tracking of webtrackers".

Wedo however, have a few questions. For a title on such an article, would one of our two example work? And also, if one for example searches for "tracking" on wikipedia, Tracking(webtracking) appears under technology. How would our article fit under this?

And last, Ghostery and Collusion are two articles that deliver this kind of service. Ghostery already has an article on wikipedia, but Collusion does not, as far as we could find. What we want to know is if we can mention these two applications in our article without it beeing seen as advertisement for said applications.

We have been given good references by a person from The Data Inspectorate here in Norway, so we hope that will help the survivability of our article.

Hope you can help with any answers to our questions, and if you have any more tips, those will be most welcome as well.

    Sincerely,
