The Auld Reekie Roller Girls (ARRG) are an all female flat track roller derby league based in Edinburgh, Scotland. The team was formed in April 2008.[1] ARRG were the first roller derby league in Edinburgh and are the second league in Scotland.[2] ARRG is skater owned and run, with the aim of promoting inclusivity for any woman over the age of 18 regardless of size, shape or skating ability.[3] ARRG play by the rules of the Women's Flat Track Derby Association (WFTDA), and were officially accepted as an Apprentice League on October 5, 2010. The league graduated as full members of the WFTDA on September 1, 2011[4].

History

The pre-WFTDA "Stinky fist" Logo

Formed in April 2008 the Auld Reekie Roller Girls were Edinburgh's first women's flat track roller derby league, and take their name after the city of Edinburgh, affectionately known as 'Auld Reekie' ('Old Smoky' in the Scots language). Within 2 months of forming there was local media interest. [5]

ARRG organise and skate in numerous bouts and tournaments, both 'closed' (for development purposes) and 'open' public bouts. ARRG hosted their first ever public bout, entitled "Fishnet Burns Night", at Meadowbank Sports Centre on the January 24, 2009 [6] just 10 months after their formation, and competed in the London Rollergirls hosted European tournament "Roll Britannia" in 2009, placing 4th [7]

ARRG have an international standing, having travelled to Berlin to take part in the first European Organisational Roller Derby Conference.[2]

Currently home bouts are played at the Meadowbank Stadium, which has capacity for up to 400 spectators.[8] The sport of roller derby is still growing in Scotland, as women over 18 are 'flocking' to the 'Fresh Meat Sundays' beginner sessions. [7][9]

Seven current members of ARRG were selected to represent Team Scotland at the 2011 Roller Derby World Cup, in Toronto.[10]

Teams

The Twisted Thistles

The Auld Reekie Roller Girls league structure includes:

  • The Twisted Thistles, the league's All Star travel team
  • The Cannon Belles, the All Star Reserves
  • In September 2011[11] ARRG announced that the league would be split into three 'hometeams' for competition between league members. These teams were named The Cherry Bombers, The Skatefast Club and The Leithal Weapons.
  • Intra-league teams were previously selected on a bout-by-bout basis. The team names were The Highland Heathens and Celtic Chaos. With the introduction of Home Teams this 'ad-hoc' selection is no longer necessary, and the team names have been unofficially retired.
