Belle Glade is the largest city in the Everglades of Florida. The earliest known inhabitants of the area |
were the Calusa Indians. “Indian Mound”, the area that contains their prehistoric habitation and burial |

mounds, is located just west of Belle Glade. The Seminole Indians that migrated from Georgia and |
Alabama are associated with this part of Florida and they gave the region the name “Okeechobeeland” |
which means Land of Big Water. |
Drainage was a big problem which prohibited the development of the area so in 1912 construction |

began on canals to control the flood waters. Three canals were completed in 1913. |
On September 16, 1928 approximately 2,500 people perished in a hurricane that caused massive |

flooding of the area. As a result of this flooding the construction of The Hoover Levy began which |
