Belle Glade is the largest city in the Everglades of Florida. The earliest known inhabitants of the area were the Calusa Indians. “Indian Mound”, the area that contains their prehistoric habitation and burial mounds, is located just west of Belle Glade. The Seminole Indians that migrated from Georgia and Alabama are associated with this part of Florida and they gave the region the name “Okeechobeeland” which means Land of Big Water. Drainage was a big problem which prohibited the development of the area so in 1912 construction began on canals to control the flood waters. Three canals were completed in 1913. On September 16, 1928 approximately 2,500 people perished in a hurricane that caused massive flooding of the area.
