Welcome to my talk page. Click here to leave me a message.

If you have come here about a page I deleted, you will probably find the explanation here; if that does not answer your question, click the link just above to leave me a message. Please mention the name of the page, and sign your post with four "tilde" characters ~~~~ so that I know who you are.

If I have left a message on your talk page, please reply there; I am watching it.

If you leave a message here I will usually reply here, but if my reply contains advice I hope you will find useful, I may place it on your talk page. (Talk page stalkers: you are welcome; if you see no reply here, there is probably one on the other talk page; I have decided to stop making a note here when I reply there).

You may E-mail me via the "E-mail this user" link under "Toolbox" in the left-hand sidebar, but you will get a faster response here; I suggest you do not use e-mail unless you need privacy. I will normally reply on your talk page, not by e-mail.

Copyvio problem

You helped me in the past, and I hope you can give me a little guidance here. User:Fernanf keeps adding the same copyrighted content (it is promotional, too) to Southville Foreign University (see the page history). I reported it to the copyright violations noticeboard, but the user keep re-adding the content. I warned the user, but to no avail. You're an administrator (and you're experienced), can you help me? David1217 (talk) 00:42, 1 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I have blocked for 3 days and given some advice. The edit-warring noticeboard WP:ANEW would be a place to report something like this; or, though adding promotional/copyright material isn't really vandalism, once he had ignored enough warnings a report to WP:AIV would get the fastest response. One thing that might have helped, though probably not, would have been to put {{welcome}} on his talk page with the first warning - the links to WP:5P and WP:YFA would have been a way to help him understand WP better, It's easy to forget that a newbie may not understand that WP is not just another Myspace. That's a horrible article; I cut a bit more copyvio, but it needs a complete rewrite. JohnCD (talk) 10:08, 1 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks

Thank you very much for your action here. I'm hoping it will help to get some discussion going or some references found. With best wishes, DBaK (talk) 09:40, 1 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I hope so. If problems continue, ask again at WP:RFPP. JohnCD (talk) 10:09, 1 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Okey doke and thanks again DBaK (talk) 15:36, 1 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Asoka Handagama

I'm a bit disappointed that you tagged the page on Asoka Handagama for deletion due to being UBLP. While some references about particular topics are a bit hard to find (e.g. exactly who considers him to be the leader of the third generation of Sri Lankan cinema, it's extremely easy to find references that show him to be a socially and artistically important filmmaker, with a worldwide reputation. Once you found that the page wasn't referenced, couldn't you have just added a reference or two rather than simply scheduling the page for deletion? Ross-c (talk) 10:35, 1 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I could have, but instead, after declining an A7 speedy, I spent some time writing advice to the newbie author and pointing them to WP:YFA and WP:WikiProject Film, so as to encourage them to do it themself and learn how to make more useful contributions. "Teach a man to fish... " Even if it dropped off my overcrowded watchlist, the page is unlikely to have been deleted - people scan the BLP-prod list for things to rescue, and an admin considering deletion after ten days would also have had a look for sources. Dhoom 3

Hi John,

The article Dhoom 3 about the film was moved to article incubator by you. The concern was it doesn't meet WP:NFF. Yet the article doesn't meet WP:NFF as its principal photography is not started. But I think Dhoom 3 is sufficiently notable. WP:NFF says "Films that have not been confirmed by reliable sources to have commenced principal photography should not have their own articles as budget issues, scripting issues and casting issues can interfere with a project well ahead of its intended filming date." Then what if some film dropped even after the photography is started? It happens is several cases. So i think we can use WP:IAR and WP:UCS in this case (i'm not much familiar with the rules, correct me if i'm wrong). Just check out google trends reports of "dhoom 3" here. Its news reference volume and search volume clearly shows its notablity. A lots of independant, reliable sources confirms it'll go on floor this month. Also the direct confirmation from producer, director and lead actors can be found. If you wish I'll provide sources. So considering these things I kindly request you to move Dhoom 3 back to article namespace. Thanks..

rahul (talk2me) 05:17, 2 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

You are right that WP:NFF is not an absolute bar if there are enough reliable sources about a future film. I will ask MichaelQSchmidt (talk), an admin who is more familiar than I am with movie articles and at AfD discussions is often sympathetic in situations like this, to look at this and move it to the mainspace if he thinks fit. John

John, Wikipedia:Crime wont help me with anything. I already knew some good information and know how to make an article. Im adding more Crime Figures on Wikipedia, Expanding the crime knowledge. Sadly I only know how to reference a website. Do you even look at it or read it? I put '<--' next to the references to show that the person Im making is real and the information is backed up by a real website. I have copied things when I have started out wikipedia, Dominik Alaimo wasnt copyright. I added more information about the guy than the piece of information that was on the website.

Im doing everything is good apart from my references. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Don Cuneo (talkcontribs) 16:28, 2 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

No, you are not doing everything good. Alaimo wasn't copyvio, but he wasn't notable; Gabriel Mannarino was a straight copy from www.lacndb.com. More than 40 of your articles have been deleted in a month - that should tell you something. Your contributions are welcome, but only if you take the trouble to learn Wikipedia's rules and standards and listen to the advice many people are giving you.
I have blocked this account - you should only use one at a time, and you cannot use this one to evade the block on King Genovese (talk). JohnCD (talk) 12:29, 3 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

SummitSportsGroup has not been advertising or spamming

SummitSportsGroup (talk · contribs) had been blocked by Alexf (talk · contribs) with the reason {{uw-spamublock}} but I can see from the user's contributions that there is no indication of spamming or advertising, even though the username is in violation of the username policy and that user has even been blocked from creating a new account. In fact Mike James (NCAA basketball player), an article that the user submitted to articles for creation, had been created. Also the user's edit count shows the number of deleted edits as 0 so there is no deleted advertisement. "Account creation blocked" should be removed from the account's block so that the user can create a new account with a username that conforms to the username policy and continue to submit more articles for creation. jfd34 (talk) 10:31, 3 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Their website says they are "a full-service Seattle-based athlete management firm dedicated to providing our clients with the best representation available" and Mike James is one of their clients, so they have a severe COI and I think it not unreasonable to ask them to make an unblock request to change username, so we can make sure before unblocking that they understand the rules about COI and promotion before posting articles about their clients; but you should take this up with Alexf (talk) who actually blocked them. JohnCD (talk) 11:04, 3 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I see the point. Block has been modified to softerblock. They can create another account or request a change of name. They are still in violation of GROUPNAME and have a serious conflict of interest in their edits. -- Alexf(talk) 11:41, 3 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
In view of the COI, I don't think a spamublock was at all unreasonable, but on the credit side they did use AfC and their entry was not spammy. I have put some advice on their user page. JohnCD (talk) 12:59, 3 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Deleted Old Black Bear Brewing Company

Wanted to get some clarification on why we couldn't start a wiki page about our brewing company. Something was said about not having substantial material in the article...Got to give us time to fill it out. Also was said that it was promotional...we actually started our article by copying Sweetwater Brewing Company's wiki page and changing the content to us. Doesn't seem consistent. — Preceding jtseaton comment added by 199.209.144.224 (talk) 16:49, 3 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I don't know what it is with Indian self-published authors. At least this one's books had ISBN numbers. There was Avinash Patra (27 socks and counting) whose works are only on-line, and any passage you check turns out to have been copied from somewhere. His book about Lord Curzon, "One of the most widely read Historical Literature of all time in the Present World", says it is published by "Oxford University Press An imprint of British Board cast service UK" and at the end says "This book has been written as a guide for those who are compelled to purchase a horse in the absence of skilled assistance..." and is datelined "EDINBURGH, OXFORDSHIRE.. UK." JohnCD (talk) 09:10, 4 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Regarding Audionic

Dear Sir,

I totally understand what i did was wrong .. and i just wanted to know what my wordings were which initiates it as spam. i will remake the article and name it as audionic and will try to confirm and let u know first before submitting it. thanks a lot for your concern and help.

Regards Zain Ahmed — Preceding unsigned comment added by Zainahmed123 (talkcontribs) 07:34, 5 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

What made it spam was puffery, promotional words like "eminent company... premium brand products... Audionic products are the best... different, innovative, creative... " That's not an encyclopedia article, that's an advertisement. I will give more advice on your talk page later today - don't do anything till you read it. Toothpaste game

Hey, the editor who was repeatedly creating the toothpaste game article also included copyvio stolen from Yahoo answers. He attempted to modify the article Cresting. Can you delete the revision due to the copyvio that is included within it or does it not matter? Ryan Vesey Review me! 21:25, 5 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

No, it's buried in the history, it doesn't need rev-deleting. I dont think this was actually a hoax in the sense of completely made-up, though it was exaggerated - see what I have said on his talk page. It's just possible that there might be an article here, though probably not soon if this is a new craze this month. JohnCD (talk) 21:53, 5 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

New Pages update

Hey JohnCD :). A quick update on how things are going with the New Page Triage/New Pages Feed project. As the enwiki page notes, the project is divided into two chunks: the "list view" (essentially an updated version of Special:NewPages) and the "article view", a view you'll be presented with when you open up individual articles that contains a toolbar with lots of options to interact with the page - patrolling it, adding maintenance tags, nominating it for deletion, so on.

On the list view front, we're pretty much done! We tried deploying it to enwiki, in line with our Engagement Strategy on Wednesday, but ran into bugs and had to reschedule - the same happened on Thursday :(. We've queued a new deployment for Monday PST, and hopefully that one will go better. If it does, the software will be ready to play around with and test by the following week! :).

On the article view front, the developers are doing some fantastic work designing the toolbar, which we're calling the "curation bar"; you can see a mockup here. A stripped-down version of this should be ready to deploy fairly soon after the list view is; I'm afraid I don't have precise dates yet. When I have more info, or can unleash everyone to test the list view, I'll let you know :). As always, any questions to the talkpage for the project or mine. Thanks! Perry Street Football Club

Can you please reinstate the page you deleted (perry street football club) I feel it has been unfairly deleted and will demonstrate the importance of the subject (football club with over 100 years of history) as the article develops. Ta Supermanscape (talk) 19:26, 6 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I have "userfied" the page for you - moved it into a user sub-page at User:Supermanscape/Perry Street Football Club where you can workj on it. If it is to be kept, you need to establish WP:Notability by giving references that show "significant coverage in reliable sources that are independent of the subject." complaint of vandalism at Azolla

Saw your message when I looked up Ken Burns' "The War" today. Took me by surprise. Be advised that since at least December 2011, edits from this IP address have been "indefinitely blocked" (last time I saw the block notice was near the end of March this year). I have been the only user of this IP address since December, and since I have been unable to do any editing such as grammar and syntax and spelling, or any minor additions to any articles, because of the block, and because of it gave up any thought of contributing anything, I did nothing at Azolla. (I haven't even looked at the article, not even out of curiosity, since the word/topic means nothing to me, and I have no idea what it means). I'm sorry about your problem, but it didn't come from here. 75.162.9.140 (talk) 21:02, 6 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

My message was dated October 2008, and this IP's contribution list shows that a vandal entry on Azolla did come from there, but that was no doubt before your time. Also, this IP is not blocked now (it it was, you would not have been able to edit my talk page), and the block log shows it has never been blocked. You must have been using a different IP when you found yourself unable to edit. In fact, if you have only just seen my 2008 message, you must have been using a different IP until very recently. GOCE Hall of Fame

Hi, you just deleted that redirect. Did you check the talk page, where the speedy was challenged? The tagger did not inform me (the creator). GOCE is a widely used abbreviation of Guild of Copy Editors. Please would you revert your deletion. Regards, --Stfg (talk) 13:42, 7 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, I checked the talk page, and sent you a message that crossed this. JohnCD (talk) 13:45, 7 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for it. But the tag was R3, not applicable here. R2 might have been, but R2 excludes CNRs from main to Wikipedia (and other) namespaces. Moreover, the deletion is controversial in any case: see the first bullet of WP:CNR#Arguments for keeping CNRs. Surely not an uncontentious speedy, and what actual harm was it doing? It fits that first bullet perfectly, since nobody is going to search for an article of that title. (No need to reply on my talk page: I watch those I post to). --Stfg (talk) 14:02, 7 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
No, it's not an R2; I reckoned R3 fitted, because it was (in its present form) recently created, and I think it fits WP:CNR#Arguments for deleting CNRs #1: we don't want visitors getting mixed up with the pipework. (WP:CNR admits that its arguments contradict each other.) However, you could argue that yesterday was only a change, so it wasn't recent, so R3 didn't apply; and if you like I will disinter it and send it to RfD. JohnCD (talk) 14:19, 7 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, I'd appreciate if you'd do that. I understand (already did) the principle you mentioned about CNRs, but it's controversial and was never a proper R3, and I'd like the chance to defend it to the community. Thanks. --Stfg (talk) 14:34, 7 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Wikipedia:Redirects for discussion/Log/2012 May 7#GOCE Hall of Fame. JohnCD (talk) 15:24, 7 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

() Thank you. And please forgive me. I created it to avoid redlinks, and now that it's back and I can do a "What links here" on it, I see that those redlinks have been dealt with already. I have removed one last one that existed on my own talk page from two weeks ago. Please accept that I haven't done any of this to waste your time or to be pointy. The tagger didn't inform me, I didn't have time to look at "What links here" before it had gone, and I thought that deleting it would create redlinks. I don't think it should have been speedied, really, but that's another story. I won't contest the deletion now, and if you want me to do anything like blanking it or putting a "no contest" reply on the RfD to facilitate closure, I gladly will. What's the protocol now? Regards, --Stfg (talk) 16:16, 7 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

No worries! The simplest way would be for you to put {{db-author}} at the top of the redirect, then someone will delete it and close the RfD. One learns something every day - I had forgotten, till I checked for this one, that mainspace-to-Wikipedia-space was an exception to R2. JohnCD (talk) 17:07, 7 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. I've done that. --Stfg (talk) 17:12, 7 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

You had plenty of warning - don't you read messages on your talk page? In particular, you were notified here on 28 April that there would be a deletion discussion at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Mobile Forces Source, and invited to contribute. That discussion ran for a week and decided to delete. Subjects for Wikipedia articles need references showing "significant coverage in reliable sources that are independent of the subject" to establish notability and as your game is still in development there will not yet be any independent comment like reviews. You may appeal to WP:Deletion review if you like, but you would do best to wait until after your game is released and gathers independent comment, and preferably wait until someone with no conflict of interest is interested enough to write about it. The Franklin Girls

Hi JohnCD, As no doubt it must be obvious to you by now. My daughters and I are new to the Wiki community. They are sisters and their name is The Franklin Girls. I read your reasons for blocking the girls' wikipedia page. Could you help me understand the distinction between their username and page and a page like (Camryn) Magness or (Lennon ) Murphy? There are thousands of performers with wiki pages so could you please guide us on how to get the girls their own page without stepping on the rules? Please? Thanks 173.86.148.21 (talk) 19:46, 8 May 2012 (UTC) My email is jonframk@netscape.net[reply]

I'm sorry that we do not do a good job of explaining what Wikipedia is not for, but it is absolutely not for what you want to do. Your girls want to tell the world that they have a "patented combination of comedic chemistry and candy colored sibling harmony" and are "a uniquely charming and talented musical duo... currently seeking agency representation", but Wikipedia is not for advertisement or promotion of any kind, and anything like that is deleted at sight - fine in Myspace or Facebook, but not in the pages of an encyclopedia. That is why group accounts are not allowed and why people are strongly discouraged from writing about themselves - see Wikipedia is not about YOU and Wikipedia:Autobiography.
You mentioned other articles - we have 3,900,000 and we know that many are substandard, so What about that other article? is not an argument that is accepted, but they are (a) not written by their subjects (b) not promotional in tone (c) backed up by references to independent sources to confirm what they say and establish notability to the standard of WP:MUSICBIO. Is there a way to do that (have a non-live article)? Then possibly release it when it is ready? I know there is a big local group of people here locally that fought to get Craft Breweries in Alabama by way of the "Free the Hops" campaign that would have more insight than me on the topic. Read the section headed "Advice as promised" on User talk:Jtseaton which will tell you how to start a userspace draft; but read carefully the section about notability. JohnCD (talk) 21:46, 8 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I have been here for a while and want to improve myself. Though I try my best to do the right thing, I may do something wrong. As you have seen me work, can you please leave me a review as I want to know where I stand so far and what should I improve to be a good editor. Your opinion has always been valuable and your review can help. Thanks :) Yasht101 08:23, 9 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

lol

no I wasn't notified of nothing ans what's ironic enough is that I was about to edit the page to say that it now gas a active community about it (it reached not ability) I think that's fair enough to keep the page can I have it undeleted sjo I can prove that it has been noticed ... on the page itself :D (talk) 08:54, 9 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

You had several notifications. At the top of your screen, click on "My talk". That shows you your talk page, where you can read them all. When you see a yellow bar across the top of your screen saying "You have new messages", you should click "My talk" to see what the new messages are.
Read WP:42 to see what we mean by notability. If you believe you can really show notability to that standard, reply below here and I will move the page into your user space where you can work on it; but don't ask for that unless it's really notable, because otherwise you will be wasting your time. JohnCD (talk) 14:24, 9 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

sorry for my slow reply i been bussy http://www.facebook.com/groups/mobileforcesandmfs/ its the official group lots of talking and discussion about Mobile Forces Source has been happening there lately :D (talk) 17:28, 12 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

A barnstar for you!

The Admin's Barnstar
For deleting the Tahkyia (R.E.D.) Brady page (finally) under G12. Thanks! Tomtomn00 (talkcontributions) 17:14, 10 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
  • Thank you! It didn't wait that long, only about an hour. CAT:CSD is quite well-patrolled now - there used to be times when the backlog was 150 - 200 and things lingered for days. Have a look at the note I left at the bottom of the author's talk page - it's useful to add something like that (with details tweaked as necessary) to a copyvio notice, otherwise they go to all the trouble of making a copyright release and then we say "sorry, puffery, not notable" and delete it again, which is not very friendly. JohnCD (talk) 20:33, 10 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

FURA

There is an article Fura-2, which has a redirect Fura. That redirect is where the reverted article is hiding. I've tried explaining this at User talk:Aharon Mathews but I don't think he really gets the whole thing. Peridon (talk) 18:24, 10 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I will encourage him to start a userspace draft, though it seems to me a case of WP:UPANDCOMING. That previous stuff is no good to him - the coherent part is copyvio, and the rest is puffery. (Where do they learn that Capital Letters For Every Single Word style?). JohnCD (talk) 20:46, 10 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Harry Devon Johnson

Edited My Blank Out error and that's also for my apology to you John Cd - of the use of my language on your talk page. I should have played the game smarter - like I already new. Sorry CommunityFlaawless (talk) 22:22, 10 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

No problem, don't worry about it. Cheers, JohnCD (talk) 16:38, 11 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Too fast!

I went to find the real article that Daniel Simmister was ripping off, and by the time I got back, you'd beaten me to the deletion. :p LadyofShalott 16:32, 11 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

It was blatant enough that I decided to shoot first and ask questions afterwards - no doubt you found that the answer was Efraín Ríos Montt. JohnCD (talk) 16:36, 11 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Yep. I can't blame you for your chosen route either. It was pretty dang obvious. LadyofShalott 16:38, 11 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Jeremiah McHoes

I do not understand why you deleted my page. No one knows more about Jeremiah McHoes than I do, because I am Jeremiah McHoes... — Preceding unsigned comment added by Jsmchoes (talkcontribs) 19:49, 11 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

It is explained on your talk page: Wikipedia is not a site like Myspace for people to write about themselves. It's an encyclopedia, so article subjects have to be notable, and writing about oneself is strongly discouraged, for reasons explained at Wikipedia is not about YOU and Wikipedia:Autobiography. JohnCD (talk) 20:09, 11 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

So the only way I will be able to have a page about me is if I became famous? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Jsmchoes (talkcontribs) 21:09, 11 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, that's right; and even then you should not write it yourself. JohnCD (talk) 21:12, 11 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

User:Rlg000raz wishes to start this article again with the content from his sandbox. Apparently the song has charted 61 for US iTunes. You were one of the contributors moving the page to Ariana Grande. I would like to know if you think the content is enough. I believe a large amount of the content is the same and would perhaps need additional third-party sources. SwisterTwister talk 03:25, 12 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

That was redirected after Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Put Your Hearts Up - all I did was restore the redirect after an IP reverted it. I have told Rlg000raz that he needs to convince Armbrust (talk) who closed the AfD, or failing that go to WP:DRV. JohnCD (talk) 09:09, 12 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

New Page Triage prototype released

Hey JohnCD! We've finally finished the NPT prototype and deployed it on enwiki. We'll be holding an office hours session on the 16th at 21:00 in #wikimedia-office to show it off, get feedback and plot future developments - hope to see you there! Okeyes (WMF) (talk) 03:47, 13 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

deborah hertz

http://en.wikipedia.org/enwiki/w/index.php?title=Deborah_Hertz&action=history - you said that it passes the low bar of a7 (for keep, not to delete). i am skeptical. so...can i bring it to the afd section for discussion? my main issue is that there are zero RS for anything she has done, and two references added a few days ago are very weak. the jewish women's archive lists any jewish woman - notable or not by any standards (see: http://jwa.org/encyclopedia/about ). and the other reference is simply a review of a book she wrote. 99% of all academic publications get reviewed by their peers. having a book reviewed certainly doesn't make someone notable, right? (wrong?) i am sure that prof hertz is a very nice person, etc. but i am having trouble seeing her article (or any search for her in googleland) meet even the lowest bar of anything notable. help... Soosim (talk) 10:06, 13 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, certainly you can take it to AfD - there are many articles that pass the low bar of A7 but not the higher one of notability. A7 is there to weed out the ones where there is no need for discussion. Read WP:DEL and WP:AFD, unless you are familiar with them, and WP:PROF, the notability standard for academics. JohnCD (talk) 16:18, 13 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
thank you! Soosim (talk) 16:44, 13 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Declined speedy

Hi JohnCD. I tagged the article User/Gunkarta/Userboxes/Pluralism as a test page as it is in article space, rather than at User:Gunkarta/Userboxes/Pluralism. The latter page already exists, so I could not move and then tag the redirect page under G2. Regards GILO   A&E 17:07, 13 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Ah, OK, I understand - I didn't spot the vital / instead of : - sorry about that! JohnCD (talk) 17:11, 13 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, the picture is representing the French Marie Sklodowska Curie (she is from Poland!!), who lives in France. Is not this a bug? What do you think? Top811 (talk)
