Biography

Early life

Johnny Ruffo was born in Balcatta, Western Australia, to parents Jill and Pascoe Ruffo.[1][2] Ruffo's parents separated when he was three years-old.[3] He spent most of his youth living in a small Homeswest unit with his mother.[3] At the age of 12, Ruffo began pursuing his dream in music, following in the footsteps of his idol, Michael Jackson.[3] He also taught himself how to play the guitar and piano, and wrote his first song at the age of 14.[3] Ruffo was educated at Balcatta Senior High School.[3] Before entering The X Factor, he worked as a concreter and got into the business thanks to his father who works in the trade.[1] Ruffo also performed around Perth with electro-pop band, Supanova.[1]

2011–present: Record deal and other ventures

Shortly after the completion of The X Factor, Ruffo signed a record deal with Sony Music Australia.[6][7] He also begun work on his debut single, stating: "I've been in the studio in Perth recording some singles, quite a few different tracks so we can get the right one out there for my first release. The songs are very much my style, which is pop, R&B, mainstream sort of stuff".[6] Ruffo has also recorded a duet with his X Factor mentor Guy Sebastian,[8] and has been working on his debut album in New York.[9] On 16 December 2011, he co-hosted radio show, Nova's Fresh Hits, with radio presenter Gawndy on Nova FM.[10] On 20 December 2011, Ruffo performed at the Melbourne State Library as part of the Optus Celebrity Carols initiative to raise money for World Vision.[11] In January 2012, Ruffo was a supporting act for Reece Mastin's first headlining national tour.[12]

In April 2012, Ruffo became a celebrity contesant on the twelfth season of Dancing with the Stars (Australia) and was partnered with professional dancer Luda Kroitor.[7][13] That same month, he was a supporting act for One Direction's Australian leg of their Up All Night Tour.[14] On 18 April 2012, Ruffo was announced as runner-up of Cleo magazine's 2012 Bachelor of the Year.[15] In May 2012, he was a supporting act for New Kids on the Block and Backstreet Boys' Australian leg of their NKOTBSB Tour.[16] Ruffo's debut single "On Top" was released on 15 June 2012 to coincide with the Dancing with the Stars grand final.[17][18] In a statement posted to his official website, Ruffo said:

I think ON TOP is a great representation of the direction I'm going in with my music. It's got that kinda soulful dance sound that's big in pop right now, but it's also pushing the boundaries and taking a few risks, both musically and lyrically, so that's what I think makes it stand out even more. I really want my music to show off an edge and a specific identity, and I think we've really achieved that with ON TOP.[19]

Ruffo was announced the winner of Dancing with the Stars (Australia) on 17 June 2012.[20] His winnings were donated to Father Chris Riley's Youth Off The Streets charity, which Ruffo supported during his time on the show.[20]

Influences

Ruffo cites Michael Jackson, Usher, Justin Timberlake, Beyoncé Knowles and Lady Gaga as his musical influences because they have led him to combine his love for singing and dancing.[1][21]
