Cogset article

That's a good point about most single speed (non-bmx) bikes using a coaster brake, I'd not thought of that. That's probably true for N. American, (I'm Canadian), but I was thinking of the Asian Utility bikes when I wrote that... maybe I can make that make sense. --Keithonearth (talk) 00:43, 29 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, I was thinking of N. America. If you have some information about Asia, please put it in. Without anything concrete, though, we're stuck with "many" instead of "most".
No, I wouldn't know where to start on bicycle articles. They start to all look fine until someone new comes along with fresh eyes and stirs the pot a little. -AndrewDressel (talk) 02:15, 29 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Keep up the good work. If you get a chance, perhaps you could take a look at Bicycle and motorcycle dynamics, Bicycle and motorcycle geometry, and Bicycle performance. -AndrewDressel (talk) 12:59, 30 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Hey, I was thinking of editing your Freehub_vs_freewheel_hub to do a cut away section of each to show the bearings. (well, at least to try to) What did you use to make it? Would you have a svg (or other format that inkscape can handle) kicking around somewhere?
No such luck, sorry. I drew it in MS Word. I can send you that, if it would help. -AndrewDressel (talk) 14:09, 5 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I seem to be stepping on your toes more than I mean to these days...sorry about that.

Don't mind me. I get cranky sometimes. Sorry about that. I like your new diagram a lot, and added to the discussion on the cogset talk page. -AndrewDressel (talk) 13:43, 4 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Happy New Year

2008's been a pleasure, and I look forward to 2009. -AndrewDressel (talk) 18:47, 1 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

You've singled out the bike I've ridden the most and the bike I've ridden the least. I bought the Litespeed new in 1994 to be the last bike I would ever need after riding the Cannondale just about into the ground. I snagged the Trek at the shop. Someone had donated it for some project, and I figured a neat old Raleigh with matching rack and fenders I had would be just as appreciated. The Trek appears to be all original with not too many miles on it. What're you on these days? -AndrewDressel (talk) 14:17, 7 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Sadly, I do not know if an 8spd Dura-Ace cassette uses the same free hub body as 7spd non-Dura-Ace shimano cassettes. Have you looked here? Wow, you done some awesome traveling? What's your favorite trip? -AndrewDressel (talk) 03:12, 8 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

no problem

It happens. As such I have not applied for rollback permission, so only thing I can do is undo the diffs. While undoing it was not showing the usual 'changes made by user so and so'. Since, it was made by a newbie user and since already lead section had a sentence (not in the first sentence though) carrying the info he intended to convey in his change, I did not bother to look back username etc.--GDibyendu (talk) 08:57, 2 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for weighing in. I was beginning to think that maybe I'm the crazy one. If you have any better references, seriously please put them in. For the most part, though, I think the WP:Cite guideline, of only referencing what is challenged or might be challenged, applies.-AndrewDressel (talk) 20:30, 20 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

German Translation

Your drawing “Labeled_Bicycle_Hub_Comparison-en.svg”‎ is excellent. I tried to translate it into German, but I am not very familiar with svg-files. Can you do that? If yes, I will write down the German Translation here at that place.--112BKS (talk) 07:47, 22 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the complement. I'm glad you like it. I may be able to do that, but in all honesty it wouldn't be at the top of my list. There is also a language neutral version: Image:Bicycle Hub Comparison.svg. Or I do think that you would be able to do it, have you played around with Inkscape at all, I didn't know how to use it before I edited Image:Bicycle evolution-numbers.svg to be Image:Bicycle Frame Diagram-en.svg. It's a great program, and I think very useful for diagram stuff on wikipedia.--Keithonearth (talk) 08:06, 22 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I think the easiest way is: You just double your file “Labeled_Bicycle_Hub_Comparison-en.svg”‎ and save it under the new file-name “Labeled_Bicycle_Hub_Comparison-de.svg”‎ (-de instead of –en). Afterwards I will change (in the –de file) the English description into the German description. This is pretty easy. After that, your job is to adjust the blue colored frames around the German descriptions and the blue lines between the blue frames and the parts at the hub. (This is too difficult for me.) Do you agree?--112BKS (talk) 10:31, 22 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I'm don't like the idea of you doing the words and me doing the boxes, I don't think it'll save me much time, and it has the possibility to end up taking me more time, as I would be less famillar how the objects are grouped, and layered, and the like. There are a few other changes I'd like to make to that image, so if you put the translation here I could do those changes at the same time as doing a de version.

Here is the translation from English to German. Not every word is translated 1:1. In that case I give you a short explanation.

  • freehub --> Kassettennabe (Not 1:1. This is just the most used German word for that kind of hub)
  • freewheel hub --> Zahnkranznabe Schraubkranznabe (Not 1:1. Same explanation as above)
  • axle --> Achse
  • lock nut --> Kontermutter
  • bearing cone --> Konus
  • ball bearing --> Kugel (Not 1:1, In English: ball)
  • bearing cup --> Lagerschale
  • flange with spoke holes --> Speichenflansch (1st line : “Speichen-“, 2nd line: “flansch”)
  • spacer --> Distanzscheibe (very difficult to translate! If the spacer is more a washer we say “Distanzscheibe”. If the washer is very thick, we say “Distanzrohr”)
  • freehub body screws into the hub shell --> Gewinde zur Befestigung des Freilaufkörpers (not 1:1, but similar) 1st line: “Gewinde zur”, 2nd line “Befestigung des”, 3rd line: “Freilaufkörpers”
  • cassette slides onto splines --> Freilaufkörper mit Nuten für Kassetten-Zahnkranz (1st line: "Freilaufkörper mit Nuten“, 2nd line: "für Kassetten-*Zahnkranz“) This is not 1:1. In English: Freehub body with notches for the cassette. Your original English text is not easy to translate into German.
  • Freewheel threads onto hub --> Schraubkranz-Gewinde (1st line: "Schraubkranz-“, 2nd line “Gewinde”) This is also not 1:1. In English: Thread for the freewheel

That’s everything. Thank you--112BKS (talk) 08:38, 23 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

It would seem appropriate to put this discussion up someplace where more people who would be interested in it could get a chance to read it. I was going to do it myself, put it up on the de:Zahnkranzpaket talk page, but I don't know if that would be the best place. Could you copy the translation to an appropriate page on de and put the link here. It seems to me to be a more inclusive way to do it. I'll make the other alteration to the image that I've been meaning to do, and give it a few days or a week, and if all everybody is happy with the translation, I'll do a de version. --Keithonearth (talk) 08:34, 24 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
de:Zahnkranzpaket is the wrong place. I need your drawing for the article de:Fahrradnabe beneath the third image. I set a link from de: Diskussion:Fahrradnabe to your page here.--112BKS (talk) 11:09, 24 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I've just re-upped the en image with a few minor modifications. Mainly I've changed the non-drive-side (left) of the hub to make it more accurate (I'd mistakenly made it so that it would have been impossible to press in the left cup.) More relevantly to this discussion is that I added a label for the "dust cover" on the left side. While it's not that important, I think it is of interest, as cassette and FW hubs tend to have significantly different dust covers. And it may not be that clear what they are in the image. If you let me know a good way to translate "dust cover" I'll put that in the de version, other than that it's all done, and can be upped anytime.--Keithonearth (talk) 01:07, 28 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
The German translation for “Dust cover“ is a little bit difficult. If it has the shape of a washer the German word is “Staubschutzscheibe” (In English: Dust-Protection-Washer). In the case of the freehub the German word is “Staubschutzhaube” (In English: Dust-Protection-Cap). But in your diagram is not enough space for both terms. So I think we need a compromise: “Staubschutz” (in English: Dust Protection) I think, the dust cover on the freewheel hub is not 100% perfect. Normally there is a little gap between the dust cover and the bearing cone (or if the dust cover is fixed on the bearing cone, the little gap is between dust cover and hub body). By the way: I also use your diagram “Bicycle_wheel_dish_diagram.svg‎”. The centre line at the rim is hard to see! The visibility would be better, if it is a little bit darker. Please excuse my terrible English. I hope it is understandable.--112BKS (talk) 17:25, 28 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Maybe it would be best if we just left the dust cover description out? Making the centre line more clear is something that I'd been meaning to do as well. I hope you don't mind that I put up a request to get input on your translaion, it's not that I thought it was wrong, just I think somethings can be a bit subjective, and others may have a different preference. You English is excellent, no need to apologies. Nor would there be a need if it wasn't so good, it's great to have the communication between the different language versions, keep it up. I hope you don't mind that I put up a request to get input on your translaion, it's not that I thought it was wrong, just I think somethings can be a bit subjective, and others may have a different preference. --Keithonearth (talk) 22:20, 28 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I agree with you. It is the best to leave the dust cover description in the de-version out. A sentence to our translation-problem: Especially with technical terms, you can use a lot of different words for the same identical thing. But some terms are common and other terms are not common. It is always the best to hear a lot of different opinions! For example: You can translate the word “cassette” into five (minimum) different German words which all have the same meaning! A very good possibility for translations is that: http://dict.leo.org/ (Another way is to look, which words are used by companies like shimano or sram.)--112BKS (talk) 07:40, 29 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Ok it's up, File:Labeled Bicycle Hub Comparison-de.svg, let me know if theres any typos or other errors. Oh, and would you mind putting up a German description? It's only got an english description at the moment, and that's pretty silly for a file that's labled in German.--Keithonearth (talk) 01:55, 30 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I made an incredible mistake! My translation for “freewheel hub” is pretty wrong. The German translation is not “Zahnkranznabe”, it is “Schraubkranznabe”. Can you please change the wrong word “Zahnkranznabe” to the proper word “Schraubkranznabe”. It was my fault. Sorry about that! The rest of your picture looks very good and is 100% OK. Thanks a lot.--112BKS (talk) 17:19, 30 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Your picture is now perfect. You can see it here de:Fahrradnabe. Actual it is to see at tab „Entwurf“. A good drawing says much more than thousand words.--112BKS (talk) 21:15, 30 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Aksai Chin

Yikes....check out the edits I made yesterday to Aksai Chin. I didn't realize until now when I looked further down the history what a battle it's been for you and FowlerandFowler to attempt to reign in Hindutashravi who is way out of touch with the facts. Some days (like all this week) I get to work on Aksai Chin all day, and next week will be headed over again to Ladakh (I see you've gotten there a few times!!) but I didn't mean to jump into this article uninvited.....I was just trying to correct some of the geographic trivia (heights, rivers, Soda Plains is only the northern part) plus the rather important and verifiable fact that India showed the line variable and indistinctly until the 1954 Nehru decree; only then did their maps start showing Aksai Chin as part of India uniformly; McMahon Line doesn't apply here, etc. I'll be away, but I'm with you on your efforts to maintain a modicum of the NPOV facts in this article!....keep up the good work.DLinth (talk) 14:40, 12 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Tibet map

Hi, I greatly need a locator map pin for Tibet. I've got one here. I was wondering if you knew how to enter the correct digits using goole earth like Template:Location map China Yunnan province. At present the digits are for Yunnan. Any idea how we can get it to work? Could you please find the coordinates of your map? Plus we could really do with some svg pin locator maps for all of the Chinese provinces!! At present though, Tibet is what I'm after.. Himalayan 14:32, 13 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

HI. Try it for Rutog. For some reason it displays several hundred kilometres east of where it should be. I wonder if you could speak to User:NordNordWest on German wikipedia. Perhaps he could give you some guidance on creating blank svg in projection for a pin locator maps? Right now we could seriously use some good quality Chinese province maps like Tibet, Qinghai, Sichuan and the rest like Template:Location map Germany Thuringia! What I'll do is draw up some empty shell templates ready.. Himalayan 18:55, 13 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Any chance you could do a another version of File:Tibet&neighbors.svg without the Tibetan Autonomous name written on it so it is clear or/and another version of File:Lhasa map.svg without Lhasa labelled and highlighted, a blank map? Himalayan 19:02, 13 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Am I meant to be basing the coordinates on centre-left, centre-right, etc? Do you know if it needs to be a certain projection for it to work?
No prob to do another vertion without the lables, but I'm not super keen to do maps of other Chinese states, I was surprised how much work this simple one was. Let's figure out how to get the pointer pointing in the right spot before I put effort into removing the labels, not that it's much work, it just seems sensible.--Keithonearth (talk) 19:06, 13 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

OK. You should ask NNW about map projections. He may be able to answer what you are looking for.. Himalayan 19:16, 13 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I guess part of the problem is I don't know what we are looking for. What exactly we are looking for? --Keithonearth (talk) 19:31, 13 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

What are we looking for? Blank maps of the provinces of China like File:Location map China Sichuan.png that can be used to display in infoboxes with a pin point. Say Chengdu for instance. Himalayan 19:37, 13 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

No, I mean, what are the issues that are causing the Tibet Locator map to not render locations properly. We need to accurately determine the map edge coordinates, we need to figure out what projection the map is/should be. Are there other issues that I'm not aware of? Or missed the importance of. --Keithonearth (talk) 19:45, 13 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

You should definately ask NNW... Thanks for your new map without lables BTW... Himalayan 22:28, 13 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Lhoka

How can you say south Tibet"is an area Chinese government has recognized to be Indian"? That's too distorted. --虞海 (Yú Hǎi) (talk) 08:04, 4 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I believe in that case I was trying to make the article in question not contradict itself. Thanks for using a talk page, but the Lhoka Prefecture Talk Page would be a much better place for us to talk about this, so everyone can see the discussion, and contribute if they want to. I think it is important to be transparent in communications on Wikipedia. --Keithonearth (talk) 04:25, 5 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Tibet county locator requests

HI. I've recently expanded Lhorong County and aim to fill out some of the others. However I was wondering if you could use your File:Tibet&neighbors Locator map.svg to create county locators by shading in the relative county in red like say Sikasso Cercle and saving it as e.g File:Lhorong County locator map.svg, File:Rutog County locator map.svg etc. If you could do all of the counties in Tibet I'd be grateful. It shouldn't take you more than a few minutes to produce each one it is just a case of using the blank map each time and highlighting the relative county. You can work them out using the existing maps anyway. This would be a great help if you could do this. Shade the county in dark red? Actually you could use the same dark orange/tan color you did with File:Shigatse map.svg that'd be fine and you could write the name of the county e.g Lhorong County in the same writing underneath that'd look good. So basically I would like a set of svg county locators like File:Shigatse map.svg but with the relative counties shaded rather than the whole prefectures. Can you do this? I don't them with the yellow bachground for the prefecture like in the horrid picture on the bottom right, but just say each county highlighted in the tan color nice and clean for whatever country it is. No pink and yellow!!. Himalayan 22:40, 16 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I'm flattered that you would like to use the SVG Tibet map I put together as a starting point for county level locator maps. I have two concerns about it: First I'm not sure that the map will be accurate enough if scaled up to that level of detail; second we never got past the issues with the projection of the map (how it should be a equirectangular projection and it's not) that causes the push pins to locate improperly. I'd not want to have a bunch of locater maps using this wrong projection. It would be tempting for editors to tweak the location in the template so it renders the right location on the wrong projection. Then someone makes a map with the right projection, and more accuracy, and none of the push pins are in the right spot. So I'd like to politely decline the suggestion. As much as I'd like to see the end of the pink and yellow colour scheme.--Keithonearth (talk) 17:48, 17 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Naaa No no I don't want county "pushpin" maps!!! I just want you to shade in the relative county in Tibet and create different ones. Ah, I'll have to do a png example so you understand what I mean. Himalayan 18:57, 17 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

This is what I mean!

See Banbar County now. I don't have the svg facilities though. Do you see what I want? Himalayan 19:06, 17 November 2009 (UTC) No it doesn't work for some of them. Please can you help me out here? Himalayan 18:54, 22 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Sure I can do some of these. I did work hard to keep the file well organized (sensible layers, etc) and inkscape is a great program, I didn't know how to use it when I did with my first image and I would encourage you to download Inksacape and give it a try. It would be nice to see the file format stay as SVG, it's so much more flexable. A couple things that might through off someone new to inkscape: You'll need to unlock the layers, (Layer->Layers-> click on lock icon), and change the lines to solid before using the flood fill tool, (Object->Fill and Stroke->Stroke Style -> Dashes), then use the flood fill tool, and change back to the original dashes. But if that's not something you want to do that's cool. --Keithonearth (talk) 22:15, 22 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]
OK, got Lhorong up, and updated the page. Is that what you had in mind? I removed the pushpin map, as it seemed redundant. I'm just going to leave it at that one for now, as if I due more now I'll be guilty of Editing While Distracted. --Keithonearth (talk) 01:58, 23 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Splitting Motorize bicycle into two articles

I wanted to make sure that you had seen my discussion re: my plans to split Motorized bicycle into two articles, one of which will deal exclusively with ebikes. Please let me know if you have any input. Thanks! Ebikeguy (talk) 20:26, 14 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the heads up, as an article that's utility cycling related I do take an interest. I've been on holiday for the last 6 weeks though and not on wikipedia much at all, so kind of missed the boat on that one. Looks like you've done a great job all the same.--Keithonearth (talk) 21:23, 21 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Exploded Sturmey AW Diagram

Hi, truly excellent diagram, but I have a few little niggles: It looks like the bottom-most part you included is the outer axle nut, that keeps the hub in the frame? If so, then I think you've neglected to explode it into the nut plus the plastic cover on it -- that or it's a newer version I'm not familiar with. Since you're going out to the axlenuts, would it be a good idea (if it'll fit) to show some frame ends in between? 80.101.113.45 (talk) 13:35, 29 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I'm glad you like the diagram. Good eye to catch the plastic cover on the axle nut. I don't remember why I didn't explode that too, I think it'll come off, but don't have it accessible for a few months. Putting some sort of representation of the dropouts is a good idea too, but I'm not sure how to make it work and make it look non-stupid. If you like I can post the xcf file (GIMP's native format) for you to edit if you want, I'm not going to put more time in to it in all honesty. --Keithonearth (talk) 13:38, 17 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Please note that an editor has added a notability tag to the Bicycle Quarterly article. The tag includes a statement that the article may be deleted if the notability of the subject matter is not established. Since you recently contributed to the article, I thought you might want to do some more work to save it. Ebikeguy (talk) 22:58, 8 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Bike Diagrams For Book

Hi Keith, I've seen your work on Wikipedia and like it. I'm writing a book about bicycling and wondered if you'd be interested in doing a few relevant diagrams of bike parts for it, in the same style as you've already done for Wikipedia? If you're interested, please get in touch. Thanks, Friedel

Images on sheldonbrown.com

I've used your two excellent exploded illustrations of bicycle headsets, slightly modified (resized, text moved to save space, borders removed from around text) on http://sheldonbrown.com/headsets.html. Thanks for the license rights and please check that it's OK. No big deal, but I would prefer that the image of the threadless headset not have the red centerline down the middle so it like the other one, if that is something you don't mind doing. Also, in this image, you didn't indicate where the handlebar stem goes -- that might be added. If the new image is the same size as the old one, I can just cut and paste w/o having to do anything else. Jsallen1 (talk) 14:57, 14 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I'm honored to have my images used on Sheldonbrown.com. I'm glad to see you are respecting the open copyright. Your feedback seems totally reasonable, and I think you're right that showing the where the threadless stem goes would be a good idea. Maybe the quill stem too. I like the red line, I'd rather add a red line to the threaded stem too, but I'm happy to provide a version without lines. I'll get to work on making some modifications. --Keithonearth (talk) 07:22, 15 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Article in Science

You may have seen this already, but in case you haven't I thought I'd give you a heads up that Science published an article on Bicycle Stability. The abstract is avalable free here, but you have to pay to read the full thing. I think I'll have to pick up a copy, dead tree style. --Keithonearth (talk) 05:22, 28 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hey Keith! Great to hear from you. It's been a while. Congrats on getting your pictures on Sheldon Brown's site. Sorry if that happened long ago and I just didn't notice.
Anyway, yes, I did see the Science piece. It got some great press coverage. Very exciting. I've tried to update bicycle and motorcycle dynamics, and I created a new article on the two-mass-skate bicycle. There are links at the bottom to the authors' own sites that have PDF copies of their preprints that they are allowed to post for free. There is also a ton of additional material there as well, if you're into that sort of thing. -AndrewDressel (talk) 12:36, 28 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Bicycle Evolution-en on Wikimedia Commons

Hi Keith,

This is just to let you know that I left a response to your post on the bicycle evolution graphic. I'm not trying to be a stick-in-the mud here, but I am hoping the graphic could be expanded to show the primary evolutionary paths of bicycle design worldwide, not just the main evolutionary branches seen in the USA. I promise to be cooperative. Cheers, Ebikeguy (talk) 16:06, 6 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Risks to human civilisation...

You removed an edit i made, (see: http://en.wikipedia.org/enwiki/w/index.php?title=Risks_to_civilization%2C_humans%2C_and_planet_Earth&diff=480759041&oldid=479757205 ) so i thought i'd ask why.

Your explaination was 'removing unhelpful cn tag'... however, i'm pretty sure there is no proof anywhere that 'Humankind has never been destroyed before' - 'The burden of evidence lies with the editor who adds or restores material.'; can you infact prove that Humankind has never beed destroyed before??

If so i would love to see evidence.

Perhaps this sentence should be corrected to: 'We have no evidence of Humankind ever being destroyed' Which would at least be factually correct. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 176.61.82.80 (talk) 17:31, 25 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
