Hockey Club Lev Praha (stylized as HC LEV Praha) is a professional ice hockey team located in Prague, Czech Republic, which will make their first Kontinental Hockey League (KHL) season in 2012–13. Although closely connected, it is not the same organization that played under the name HC Lev Poprad in Poprad, Slovakia during the last KHL season.[2]

History

First HC Lev in Hradec Králové and Poprad

A team named HC Lev was originally founded and based in Hradec Králové, Czech Republic. The intention was to join the KHL for the 2010–11 season, for which it fulfilled all necessary conditions except that the Czech Ice Hockey Association refused to give permission to the club.[3] Because of that, Lev's management decided to move the club to Slovakia, whereupon is has been accepted by the KHL's administration to participate in the league in the 2010–11 season.[4] However, the KHL voided the team's membership from the league for the 2010–11 season because the team did not officially belong to any national ice hockey governing body.[5]

After further efforts, including joining the Slovak Hockey Federation (SZĽH), HC Lev was officially admitted to the KHL in May 2011. The team found a home in Poprad where they shared the stadium with HK Poprad from the Slovak Extraliga.[6] The club played only one season as Lev Poprad, finishing 21st in the league and missing the play-offs.

New team in Prague (2012)

Late in the 2011–12 season, a change of owners renewed speculation about a move to Prague, Czech Republic. In March 2012, the Czech Ice Hockey Association (ČSLH) granted permission for a KHL team to play in the Czech Republic,[7] and at the end of April, a newly found team with the same name, HC Lev, but as a different organization, officially applied to the KHL to play in Prague.[2] The Poprad-based HC Lev was disbanded after only one season. The owners of HC Lev Poprad should still pay a large amount of money to the former players of the team as well as to their former employees and contractors from Slovakia. The law suit started in July 2012 in Prešov, Slovakia. It is possible that HC Lev Praha will not be allowed to play in the KHL in 2012–13 season if they don't pay these debts on time.

Lev Praha cooperates with local club HC Sparta Praha and the two teams are expected to share the Tipsport Arena.

2012–13 season

Lev will start their first KHL season on 6 September 2012 at home against Dinamo Riga.[8]
