"We Run the Night" is a song by Australian DJ and recording artist, Havana Brown, written and produced by Cassie Davis and Snob Scrilla of production duo More Mega. It was released for digital download on 29 April 2011 by Island Records (Universal Music Australia) as Brown's debut single. "We Run the Night" received a mixed reception from critics. The song peaked at number five on the ARIA Singles Chart, and certified triple platinum by the Australian Recording Industry Association (ARIA).
The US version of the song, featuring additional production by RedOne and guest vocals by American rapper Pitbull, was released digitally in the United States and Canada on 14 November 2011 by RedOne's label 2101 Records and distributed via Universal Republic.
Reception
Critical response
Nic Maher of Luna magazine called the song "quite catchy" and wrote, "autotune saves this femme fatale from what would otherwise be a disastrous release."[1] Layla Clarke of The AU Review wrote, "We Run the Night is as epic as it is euphoric, with an insanely infectious breakdown that's guaranteed to throw the crowd into overdrive."[2] After listening to the song, a writer for Beat magazine felt Brown should stick to being a DJ because "a singer she is not!".[3]
Chart performance
"We Run the Night" debuted at number seven on the ARIA Singles Chart on 9 May 2011, serving as the highest debuting single of that week.[4] It also became the first single from an Australian artist to debut within the top-ten in 2011.[4] The following week, the song fell down three spots to number ten.[5] In its fifth week on the chart, "We Run the Night" moved from number seven to number five, where it peaked.[6] It was certified triple platinum by the Australian Recording Industry Association (ARIA), for selling 210,000 digital copies.[7]
The international version featuring Pitbull charted in Canada and peaked number one on the US Billboard Hot Dance Songs chart. On the week on April 7, 2012, the song made its debut on the Billboard Hot 100 at number 99 and peaked at number 38. It also peaked at number 48 in Canada. As of 13 July 2012, the song has sold 644,000 copies in the US.[8]
Music video
The music video for the song was directed by Benn Jae and Tony Prescott.[9]
A second video with Pitbull was released On 7 March 2012 to accompany the US Re-Release of the single.
