|Originally majored in architecture and town planning to work in Britain and the Commonwealth, but had a head injury shortly after qualifying at 15 causing me to become obsessed with highways and transportation aspects for the whole of my subsequent working career of 50 years, from which I retired 2 years ago. I am an Esquire of the Royal Division, and a Member of the Chartered Institution of Highways and Transportation.
In England the term 'kings highway' is traceable to 859 AD in an Earle Land Chart (an Earl in Anglo Saxon times was the same as a Count in Anglo-Norman times and thereafter, so, for Earle read Counte or, County in modern English), The annotation says, "...'''''cyniges heiweg'''''..." (Oxford English Dictionary online accessed 15:04 gmt 25 July 2012) which throws up an interesting probability that it was asserted and protected by a secretive guild of freemasons even then (see Wikipedia article [[County surveyor]]). In Wales the term is traceable to 950 AD through the [[Laws of Hywel Dda]] cited in 'Roads and Trackways of Wales' by Richard Colyer, which throws up a likely connotation that the King they were being asserted, protected, and preserved for was the King of Kings, Jesus Christ, because we Welsh were a pious lot then, and some of us still are. I'm looking forward to being engaged in this project and a member of this august team of Highwaymen!
