The Opening Ceremony of the 2012 Summer Olympics will be held at 21:00 BST (UTC+1) on 27 July 2012 and will be called "The Isles of Wonder".[1] Opening ceremony of this mega event has been conceptualized by Oscar-winning British director Danny Boyle, of Slumdog Millionaire fame.[2]
Ceremony
The games will be officially opened by Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh.[3] During the television coverage of the ceremony a short film starring Daniel Craig as secret agent James Bond will be screened.[4] Also Sir Paul McCartney has announced that he will perform at the close of the ceremony.[5]
The ceremony will include a soundtrack based on iconic pieces of British music, including the theme tunes from Doctor Who and radio soap opera The Archers, pop and rock songs, and pieces of classical music.[6]
In June 2012, Boyle showcased the London Olympic opening ceremony preview, which promised a huge set of rural Britain consisting of "A village cricket team, 12 horses, 10 chickens, 70 sheep, a model of Glastonbury Tor, two mosh pits, and the largest harmonically-tuned bell in the world", as well as a rain-producing cloud. The intention will be to showcase the mystical landscape of Britain, both rural and urban. It will feature a mosh pit at each end of the set, one having people celebrating a rock festival and the other people at the Last Night of the Proms. A replica of Glastonbury Tor will adorn one side of the set. Boyle promised an opening ceremony where everyone will feel involved. He said "I hope it will reveal how peculiar and contrary we are – and how there's also, I hope, a warmth about us." The set will contain real grass and real soil.[7][8] The use of real animals drew criticism from the animal rights organisation PETA. Boyle wrote a reply to PETA assuring them that genuine care will be taken of the animals.[9]
A. R. Rahman, an Indian musician who worked with Boyle on the drama film Slumdog Millionaire (2008) and the biographical film 127 Hours (2010) – both directed by Boyle – said that he had composed a Punjabi song for the opening ceremony. It will be a part of a medley which will showcase Indian influence in the UK, according to Boyle's wishes. Another Indian musician, Ilaiyaraja's song from Tamil-language film Ram Lakshman (1981), has also been chosen as part of the medley.[10]
Parade of the Nations
According to custom, Greece will lead the parade, followed by other competing countries in alphabetical order and finally the host nation Great Britain.
Official song
"Survival", a single released by the English band Muse, will be the official song of the Olympics.[11] It will be broadcast when the athletes enter the stadium and in the period before medal ceremonies; international broadcasters will also be playing it while reporting on the Games.[12]
Rehearsals
On 19 July 2012 photographs of a rehearsal were taken inside the Olympic stadium. Pictures included a countryside scene with a cricket match. There was also an aerial photograph showing an EastEnders titles style view of London. The scene contains a water wheel and four maypoles representing the four nations of the UK. [13]
