Company history
Sunrider was founded in 1982 in Orem, Utah in the United States by the Taiwan-born herbalist, Dr. Tei-Fu Chen. In the late 1980s, the company moved its headquarters to the Los Angeles area. It has since developed into a multinational corporation with about forty offices worldwide. Sunrider recently acquired several hotel properties in East Asia.[4] Sunrider has over 7,000 retail stores in China,[5] and will have 200 more stores in Malaysia this year.[6]
Sunrider is an early innovator in stevia products, using a non-chemical extraction method that removes the green color and the bitter aftertaste of the Stevia leaves.
Sunrider is an official sponsor of the annual Los Angeles AIDS Walk,[7] Enterprise Mentors International (non-profit microfinance organization), the Torrance Chinese School, the American Cancer Society "Relay for Life", UNICEF, and the Los Angeles Consular Corps. Sunrider is the Sole sponsor for the Establishment of the Special Committee on Sub-health under the World Federation of Chinese Medicine Societies.[8]
Sunrider is the exclusive food supplement supplier sponsoring the 2008 Israeli Olympic Team.[9]
Sunrider has also made large monetary contributions to the Hong Kong Committee for UNICEF, the Gang Alternatives Program (GAP) in Los Angeles, the Deseret International Foundation, the Make a Wish Foundation in Korea, and numerous charities and scholarships in China, Hong Kong, and Taiwan.[10][11]
Sunrider International constructed a new manufacturing and research & development facilities in the Harbor Gateway neighborhood of South Los Angeles. The new facilities is one of five manufacturing locations that Sunrider operates worldwide. The L.A. manufacturing plant is over 1,000,000 square feet (93,000 m2).

Every summer, Sunrider International hosts an annual event known as Grand Convention. The conventions are normally held in southern California.
In commemoration of the company's 25th anniversary, the 2007 Grand Convention was held in China and Hong Kong, with nearly 10,000 people in attendance. Asian pop stars Richie Ren and Kelly Chen performed at the Convention.[12]
The 2008 and 2009 Grand Conventions have been held in Anaheim, California.[13] In 2010, Sunrider conducted convention during a cruise vacation. The 2011 Grand Convention is scheduled to convene in Long Beach, California.
The company's 30th anniversary Grand Convention is scheduled to be held in August 2012 in Long Beach, California.
Manufacturing of Products
Sunrider International researches, develops, and manufactures all of its own products and does not outsource any production. The manufacturing process begins with buying raw herbs, sanitizing/cleansing the herbs, refining and concentrating, and packaging.[1] This process occurs at all of Sunrider's four manufacturing sites throughout the globe Guangzhou, China; Taiwan; Singapore; and Los Angeles. A fifth manufacturing plant is under construction in Kunshan, China, in the metropolitan area of Shanghai, China. The Kunshan plant will have nearly 1,000,000 square feet (93,000 m2) of manufacturing space. The Los Angeles manufacturing plant was opened in July 2008 and is the largest of its kind in the world, having nearly one million square feet of manufacturing facilities and space in the heart of southern Los Angeles, California[14] and is recognized as a "Good Corporate Citizen" by the Sanitation Districts of Los Angeles County[15]
Sunrider also manufactures its products in a way that ensures kosher and halal quality of their foods and supplements, making them marketable and available to the Jewish and Islamic communities.[16]

Hotel Business
Sunrider has created a new hotel chain, having acquired several hotels in Asia. In Beijing, the hotels are the Sunworld Dynasty Hotel (on [[{Wangfujing Avenue]]) and the Sunworld Hotel, which is next door. In Taipei the Sunworld Dynasty Hotel is one of the largest hotels in the city. Both hotels in Beijing are "Olympic" hotels, meaning that they are pre-booked by government officials for the weeks during the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing. The Sunworld Dynasty hotels are five-star, while the Sunworld Hotel is a four-star. The Sunworld Dynasty Hotel in Beijing has Asia's largest indoor terrace plaza.
Controversies
- Stephen Barrett has accused the company of making false claims regarding its products' therapeutic effects, and reports legal problems the company has faced from the FDA and state of California regarding false medical claims. In addition, Barret claims that Sunrider distributors do not have the proper qualifications to advise their customers about the products' use.[17] The company has instructed distributors to avoid medical claims, and no longer publicizes any such claims.[18]
- In 1987, salmonella bacteria were found in one of the company's products.[19][20] Since 1987, Sunrider has improved sanitary conditions, and has in fact received numerous awards in the category.[21]
- In 1992 a jury in Phoenix, Arizona, concluded that Sunrider had violated Arizona's racketeering laws and out of court Sunrider settled for $650,000 to a woman who claimed that Sunrider products have had a negative effect on her health.[17][22] The company points out that no one else had negative effects from the products, and the woman's boyfriend admitted several years later to spiking the products with the toxic element thallium to force Sunrider into an out-of-court settlement [21]
- In 1995 U.S. Attorney Nora Manella announced that Sunrider International and its owners had been charged with orchestrating a massive tax and customs fraud scheme to evade tens of millions of dollars in taxes. Manella announced that the Chens and Sunrider Corporation were indicted by a federal grand jury in a 20-count indictment charging them with conspiracy, tax evasion, filing of false corporate tax returns, and smuggling. In 1997, the Chens entered into a plea bargain with the court on the charges of tax evasion and customs fraud. He served nearly a year in prison; she served six months of home detention. The Chens paid nearly $100 million in back taxes, interest and penalties and an additional $4 million to avoid forfeiting the artifacts they were accused of smuggling and undervaluing. Several years later, Robert Henrie published a book entitled "Journey to the Sun", in which he attempts to abridge all the events regarding the whole case.
