== Check I'm not spamming ==

Hi,
I am the editor of film review website flickfeast.co.uk. We have been referenced a few times on wikipedia and we have just published a great Top Ten Pedro Almodovar article which I was adding as an external link on the wikipedia film pages of the titles we have included.

I hit a warning that you might consider such action as spamming. Can you please confirm if that is the case as I do not mean to spam you!

I had intended to also add external links to some of our best reviews to individual film pages. But I won't if you consider that spamming.

Thanks,
Robin

Welcome—ask questions about how to use or edit Wikipedia! (Am I in the right place?)
    • For other types of questions, use the search box, see the reference desk or Help:Contents. If you have comments about a specific article, use that article's talk page.
    • Do not provide your email address or any other contact information. Answers will be provided on this page only.
    • If your question is about a Wikipedia article, draft article, or other page on Wikipedia, tell us what it is!
    • Check back on this page to see if your question has been answered.
    • For real-time help, use our IRC help channel, #wikipedia-en-help.
    • New editors may prefer the Teahouse, a help area for beginners (but please don't ask in both places).

Page on requested edit list without an edit request?

Why is Wikipedia_talk:Contact_us showing up at WP:SPER? I don't see {{edit semi-protected}} anywhere on the page. It might be a caching issue, but I don't see it in the history either. RudolfRed (talk) 01:01, 29 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I only see Wikipedia talk:Contact us/blocked which redirects to Wikipedia talk:Contact us. Are you sure you saw Wikipedia talk:Contact us and not Wikipedia talk:Contact us/blocked? PrimeHunter (talk) 01:07, 29 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Oops. I didn't notice it redirected. I just clicked on the "request" link on the edit request page and then copied the page name when I asked my question. Thanks. RudolfRed (talk) 01:11, 29 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

    Re-use of content

    Resolved

According to Wikipedia#Content_licensing can I copy paste a debate from my talk page to an article talk page without the other editors' consent as long as I redact their signitures if they request it? When the project was started in 2001, all text in Wikipedia was covered by GNU Free Documentation License later replaced with a CC license.--Canoe1967 (talk) 03:57, 29 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry for not answering your question, but isn't it much smarter to simply post a permalink on the talkpage? Arcandam (talk) 04:00, 29 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for your response. I don't know how yet. Could you revert my talk page and put the link to Talk:Gun laws in Colorado for me?--Canoe1967 (talk) 04:13, 29 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Done I am marking this thread as resolved, if you have any further questions you can respond on your talkpage, I have it watchlisted. Arcandam (talk) 04:34, 29 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

    Static IP redirect?

I have a static IP address assigned to me by my ISP, would it be in order for me to redirect the user/ talk page(s) to those of my account in-case I make edits and forget to login? I believe this would help in tracing and thus querying any edits made under the IP and allow me to be notified of any such comments without being logged out. --wintonian talk 05:12, 29 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I see now harm in it. On the re-direct page you may wish to make a note explaining it though?--Canoe1967 (talk) 07:21, 29 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Its probably best to leave a comment containing a link on the talkpage of the IP. Arcandam (talk) 07:41, 29 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Ok I've soft redirected the talk page with a note and hard redirected the user page, I think that should be enough for people to work out what's going on. --wintonian talk 02:18, 30 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

    My User Page

I can't add [[Category:Wikipedians who have opted out of automatic signing|{{PAGENAME}}]] to my user page because I don't have one? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.57.130.3 (talkcontribs)

Why don't you want to sign posts like your question here in any way? It's annoying when there is no indication who made a post. I had to look in the page history to see you don't have an account (many users have an account but no user page). If you have no account then you cannot create a user page (though others can create it for you). You can add {{NoAutosign}} to your user talk page. Allow up to 5 minutes for it to take effect. PrimeHunter (talk) 15:25, 29 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, please see Wikipedia:Signatures for the relevant guideline. If you opt out of automatic signing and you do not diligently sign your talk page comments manually, it could become quite disruptive to regular discussion. BigNate37(T) 16:10, 29 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Accidentally wiped out references on "Kakuma" page

Because the full html is not exposed on the Wiki edit function, I appear to have wiped out the two "References"--aka footnotes--on the "Kakuma" page [1] when I cut and paste, trying to add another book as a reference--aka bibliography. Please advise how to restore the Egger's book and the info on the solar cookers to "Kakuma" References and list KAKUMA-TURKANA by Daniel Cheng Yang as Further Reading.

On "Lost Boys of Sudan" [2], a nearly similar problem. I added KAKUMA-TURKANA to References, but apparently need to create a Further Reading category and add it there, instead. Thanks. Bonnie Hayskar (talk) 18:40, 29 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

When you remove a {{reflist}} tag, that is what stops them from appearing. The actual content of the reference list is generated by the use of <ref> tags throughout the body of the article. Further details are available at Wikipedia:Citing sources, and you may wish to read Wikipedia:Referencing for beginners. To fix Kakuma, or generally any time you accidentally damage an article, simply click the View history tab at the top, and you will be see your edit listed at the top. You may then revert your change if necessary (see Help:Reverting). If you want to add a general reference then using a <ref> tag is not ideal: WP:GENREF explains two ways to do that. If you have more questions or you want someone to fix Kakuma for you, please let us know. I'm just taking a look at Lost Boys of Sudan right now, too. BigNate37(T) 18:50, 29 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Consider that our Manual of Style has recommendations on the way notes and references should be organized (see WP:FNNR). If an article utilizes {{reflist}} like Lost Boys of Sudan does, it's not only difficult but also counter-productive to move those cited references into a manual, general listing. BigNate37(T) 18:57, 29 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I think I may need some help from Wiki on this. I did the undo, but there had been previous edits so now it does not allow me to undo and restore--only undo. What I need is for the original text to be restored, both on "Kakuma" and "Lost Boys of Sudan," to restore the footnotes (References). Thanks. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Bonnie Hayskar (talkcontribs) 19:13, 29 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Your manual revert looks good now. (Note to others: I carried this discussion over to Bonnie's talk page, which wasn't the best organizational tactic, but just so you know.) BigNate37(T) 19:50, 29 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Please raise the issue on the article's talk page. Or, be bold and fix it yourself, if you can cite reliable sources to support your change. RudolfRed (talk) 20:25, 29 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Don't be bold in this case. You may get blocked if you do. Arcandam (talk) 20:40, 29 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
This prompted me to browse WP:MOS for a relevant guiding principle, and I couldn't find anything. Do we have guidelines covering this type of distinction, particularly regarding nationalism within Great Britain? Note that I'm not asking what should be done specifically, just where the guidelines are, if any. BigNate37(T) 20:29, 29 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Seems that in this instance, WP:UKNATIONALS#Present-day_UK_nationality_.28examples_of_use.29 is the closest we come to a guideline. BigNate37(T) 23:15, 29 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I can't comment on how Wikipedia handles this, but it was my understanding that while he was born in Wales, he was brought up in England and considers himself English - I can't imagine there're any guidelines for specifically this situation - editors will just have to reach a consensus, which there seems to be in this case per Talk:Christian Bale#Wales is not England. So I'd not edit the article just yet, I recommend discussing it on the talk page as long as past discussions don't clear up the matter for you already. Яehevkor 20:36, 29 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Your own knowledge is not sufficient. You need to find a reliable source stating what you said, assuming you can find one. One way to go about this, if you can't find one, is to convince a reporter to interview you, and if the newspaper or TV station or whatever trusts you are telling the truth, you can use the story as a reference.— Vchimpanzee · talk · contributions · 21:04, 1 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

    Need to rename picture file

You uploaded it to http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:McKinney_McDonald_House.jpg so it has to be renamed by a Commons administrator or file mover. See commons:Commons:File renaming. If you want to link to a Wiktionary article from a Wikipedia article about the same term, you should use {{wikt}}. If you just want to link to a dictionary definition in the body of an article, Aracandam's syntax above is correct, but do note that it's almost always poor style to link dictionary definitions on the assumption that readers will be unfamiliar with a word's meaning. If you mean this article Wikipedia talk:Articles for creation/ShoeCareSupplies.com, it has not been submitted for review yet - but it won't get past the review in any case. It reads like an advertisement, is totally lacking in sources, and fails to provide evidence that the subject meets Wikipedia notability guidelines - in this case Wikipedia:Notability (organizations and companies). To be frank, I doubt that your business stands much chance of doing so, but I recommend you read this for yourself. While I wish you well in your enterprise, it isn't Wikipedia's function to provide free advertising, and any articles are 'ours' rather than belonging to the subject of the article - and have to be based on third party reliable sources (to establish notability, amongst other things), and be written in a neutral and encyclopaedic tone. I would try to create a redirect and merge whatever information of the novel's article towards the main's, but the main article is protected and I can't do a thing.--NeoBatfreak (talk) 23:57, 30 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

The movie article at The Dark Knight Rises is only Semi-protected, and you should be autoconfirmed, so there shouldn't be any problems for you to edit it. But, before you make this change, you should propose it on one of the article's talk page and get consensus. You can use one of the {{merge}} templates to get the attention of anyone who reads either article. RudolfRed (talk) 00:26, 31 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I'm sorry to say I am not autoconfirmed, don't know why. Can you help finding out what is going on?--NeoBatfreak (talk) 00:27, 31 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I'm assuming that you're assuming that you're not autoconfirmed because you can't edit the article on the movie – Neo, it's actually fully protected.--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 00:35, 31 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, it is fully protected. Wonder why I can't edit, since I never vandalizing articles before.--NeoBatfreak (talk) 00:40, 31 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Your follow-up confuses me. This may be my failing but it sounds like you think you (and/or others) are prevented from editing this fully-protected article based on some setting on your account, such as a log of vandalism, while other non-administrator editors are permitted to edit it. That's not how protection functions. No one but an administrator (or higher access level) can edit a fully protected article: It's a blanket prohibition. If you look at the protection log entry, it was imposed with the edit summary note: "chaotic editing, multiple parties violating 3RR".--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 00:53, 31 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Oh. Thanks for explaining. Still, I would like to make some small contributions though.--NeoBatfreak (talk) 00:55, 31 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Unfortunately, you'll have to wait until the protection is removed (or reduced). However, if you have something very specific (and uncontroversial) that you think would improve the article immediately, you can ask for its addition second hand by going to the talk page, placing the template {{Edit protected}}, and making a clear and specific request below it. You would need to say exactly what content should go where, or what should be changed or removed. Generalities are the death knell of such requests.--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 00:57, 31 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry for the misinformation. It was previously semi-protected and I failed to notice that it was switched to full protection. RudolfRed (talk) 00:59, 31 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Still, can you put a merge template on the novel adaptation article? I mean, do we really need an article basically repeating the same information as the movie's?--NeoBatfreak (talk) 01:01, 31 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

    Lost

Ok, a few days ago I signed up to help with images on Wikipedia. Today I'm completely lost, so lost in fact by the sheer number of pages and links and links to pages or pages to links et-al that I don't know if I'm coming or going! Look I'm good with images, give me a image of a pigs ear and Photoshop and one hour later I return it looking like a silk purse! However I'm a simple soul who only want to help not study for a flipping Ph.D. in Wikipedics. So if anyone has "Editing images in Wikipedia for Dummy's" please post it here (wherever here actually is!) --Ceepin1826 (talk) 01:51, 31 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Some images are hosted here at http://en.wikipedia.org and some at http://commons.wikimedia.org. See Wikipedia:Graphic Lab and commons:Commons:Graphics Lab. If a file page has a "Full resolution" link then be sure to work on the full resolution. Images are edited with your own software and must be reuploaded after editing. When your account becomes autoconfirmed you get a link on file pages saying "Upload a new version of this file". An account is autoconfirmed when it's at least 4 days old and has at least 10 edits. If you want to be able to reupload images at both Wikipedia and Commons then you must reach autoconfirmation at both sites. Your Wikipedia account currently has 3 edits and becomes 4 days old in 5 hours. All edits at en.wikipedia.org count. It doesn't have to be article edits. Public Domain Images

I am currently trying to figure out if the photos for the Washington State Legislators are licensed in the Public Domain. They are located here and here. I have previously uploaded two of these photos, but they were deleted because there isn't an explicit statement that they are in the Public Domain. While I was looking for photos elsewhere, I found that Ballotpedia was actively using the photos (like this one). For the photo's permission information, it is stated that "This image comes from the http://www.leg.wa.gov/pages/home.aspx website. It is used here because a Ballotpedia staffer requested and obtained permission to use it and was informed by the relevant government office or private entity or individual who created this image that the image is in the public domain.". Does this mean that we must contact the same government office as Wikipedia and obtain the same permissions, or can we take Ballotpedia's word that a government office stated that the images are in the public domain? Gold Standard 02:42, 31 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

    I would say ask the office for permission. RudolfRed (talk) 03:01, 31 July 2012 (UTC)RudolfRed (talk) 03:00, 31 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, I am User:Andrei.smolnikov. I edit wikipedia from my school's IP adress often, however, sometimes I am unable to do so because of vandalism only accounts resulting in my school's shared IP address being blocked. This means that often I am unable to edit Wikipedia even when I log in. Could you please tell me if it is possible to do anything about this? Thank you. From the question, I think it is Wikipedia blocking the school and not the other way around. RudolfRed (talk) 16:03, 31 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
How exactly do I ask for a IP block exempt? The page wasn't quite clear. Andrei.smolnikov (talk) 00:38, 1 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
My reading from the relevant pages is that you would request this at the same time you request unblocking the next time it happens. I agree that this is not made very clear across the references we have. BigNate37(T) 01:12, 1 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

    Watchlist bot hiding concern

Rather than suppressing bot edits the watchlist seems to suppress the page altogether, such that if a page is edited by a user and then a bot in quick succession, the page does not appear on my watchlist at all. In this manner, an unsigned comment effectively masks that talk page from appearing on my watchlist. What should be happening, is while bot edits are suppressed, the most recent non-bot edit should be used for determining watchlist sorting. Is it correct to call this a bug, or am I being naive? BigNate37(T) 18:56, 31 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

File:AdMetTrainTransAdelaide.jpg is freely licensed. File:Translink-corner-logo.png is non-free fair use content, and only has a fair use rationale for use in Central railway station, Brisbane. In fact, that's probably not a sufficient rationale. TransLink (South East Queensland) is the only article that can really justify bearing a non-free logo for TransLink, and it's already using File:TRANSlink-brand.svg. I'm not a resident copyright policy expert so I don't feel comfortable spelling out exactly how things have to change, but that situation is going to be have to be looked at and fixed. If it's any consolation, I looked at your template code and tried to see if I could help you solve your technical problem, but that's a bit over my head as well. I believe WP:FUC #8 is where the restriction on use of non-free logos comes from that you see in Wikipedia:Logos. Specifically, WP:LOGOS#Logos as icons states "Logos should not generally be used as icons within an article's Infobox." BigNate37(T) 07:10, 1 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah.. it's licensed like that because I uploaded it and it said I couldn't set the page it's used for the be the Infobox. If I change the license would I be able to use it? TravellerQLD (talk | contribs) 07:12, 1 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Only the copyright owner can choose what license to release the logo under. Your responsibility as the uploader is to choose the license template that's appropriate for what the company has chosen. If I'm at the correct TransLink website (there are like five companies called that) then http://translink.com.au/site-information/legal/copyright states that the logo cannot be used for commercial purposes, which is incompatible with our free licensing requirements (see WP:NONCOM). BigNate37(T) 07:17, 1 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Lame. I'll just remove it then. Thanks anyways. TravellerQLD (talk | contribs) 07:22, 1 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
It looks as though TransLink makes use of the same free images as Adelaide for bus, train and... is that a taxi-boat? For instance on the bottom-right of http://translink.com.au/tickets-and-fares/fares/ekka. You may wish to try using File:AdMetTrainTransAdelaide.jpg or a coloured variant of it since it appears to be the same? In any event, I'm sorry I had to rain on your template like that. I'm off to sleep for the night, happy editing. BigNate37(T) 07:37, 1 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Re the removal of my article on Frederick Tibbenham

    Frederick Tibbenham (edit | talk | history | protect | delete | links | watch | logs | views)

Hello, My well-researched article on Frederick Tibbenham has either been removed, or is about to be. The remover says there are no sources. I can't think why such a statement has been made. All sources are checkable, and from reliable sources, such as the British War Museum's photographic collection - available on line, and the UK census, and the Daily Mail's archives. A search of 'Frederick Tibbenham' will bring up all quoted sources, but the removalist says he can only find one source of anything related to FT on the NY Times site. All the references are also contained within my Facebook page entitled 'Friends of Oakhurst' https://www.facebook.com/home.php#!/groups/friendsofoakhurst/ . Can you intervene? I have asked for the deleter's help to cite, rather than delete, as I know the entry to be correct and accurate. Thank you, Pandora Melly Pandoramelly (talk) 08:19, 1 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

The Frederick Tibbenham article is (in my opinion) better and less biassed than most new articles, and I hope it will be retained. The problem is, I think, that the references are not incorporated in the article in the approved way. They should not just be listed at the bottom of the article, they should be linked to from the statements which they support, like footnotes.
I have begun to remedy this, by trying to do one of them in the approved way. I am far from an expert in this, and I may well have done it wrong, but I believe I have improved the article, and it chances of avoiding deletion. I hope you will be able to do the same for your other references. Maproom (talk) 09:00, 1 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
P.S. It would help to start with more information about who Mr. Tibbenham was: nationality, date of birth, profession. Something like "Frederick Tibbenham (1892-1968) was a British carpenter and businessman".
You mention here that some of the information comes from the Daily Mail's archives, but the article's sources don't mention any newspapers. If this person has received coverage in a national newspaper then the article is much more likely to be kept. I suggest you edit the article to show which information comes from news coverage, using the {{cite news}} template to format the title, headline, date and author neatly. Sources for Wikipedia articles don't have to be online. -- John of Reading (talk) 09:25, 1 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, I was wondering if anyone could review my first article before I post it?

    Check I'm not spamming

Hi, I am the editor of film review website flickfeast.co.uk.

    Thanks, Robin
