Australia, represented by a team of 410 athletes, is competing at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London, United Kingdom, from 27 July to 12 August 2012. Australian athletes have competed in every Summer Olympic Games of the modern era.
Team
Australia has selected a team of 410 athletes (224 men and 186 women).[1] This will be Australia's fifth-largest team sent to an Olympic Games.[1] There will be 227 Australian athletes competing at their first Games.[1] Andrew Hoy's selection in the equestrian eventing team makes him the first Australian athlete to compete in seven Games.[2] Road cyclist Stuart O'Grady and shooters Michael Diamond and Russell Mark have been selected to compete at their sixth Games.[3] Beach volleyballer Natalie Cook has been selected and becomes the first Australian female athlete to compete at five Games.[4] Dressage rider Mary Hanna at 57 is the oldest athlete on the team[5] and diver Brittany Broben the youngest at the age of 16.[1] Nick Green is Australia's Chef de Mission.
Australia did not qualify teams in the football, women's indoor volleyball, handball and fencing competitions. There is only a single competitor in the wrestling, trampolining, rhythmic gymnastics and men's gymnastics. The largest team is athletics, with 52 competitors.[6]

Athletics
The following Australian athletes were selected in the 52 person team, after having achieved the required qualifying standards in athletics events (up to a maximum of three athletes in each event at the "A" standard, and one at the "B" standard):[7][8] Steve Hooker was appointed the team captain and it is the second biggest team ever sent to an Olympics held overseas.[9]
