Novell Vibe is a web-based team collaboration platform developed by Novell, and was initially released by Novell in June 2008 under the name of Novell Teaming. Novell Vibe is a highly versatile collaboration solution that can serve as a knowledge repository, a document management system, a project collaboration hub, a process automation machine, or a corporate intranet. Users can upload, manage, comment on, and edit content in a secure manner. Supported content includes documents, calendars, discussion forums, wikis, blogs, tasks, and much more.

Advanced users with no knowledge of web development can give a fresh look and feel to team workspaces that they manage by creating custom web pages using a simple built-in editor. Powerful workflow capabilities automate and streamline business processes and help make and keep organizations running smoothly. Document management functionality allows for document versioning, approvals, and document lifecycle tracking. Users can download and modify pre-built custom web pages and workflows free of charge from the Vibe Resource Library.[1]

History

Novell Vibe is the result of a merging of two products in November 2010: Novell Teaming and Novell Pulse.[2]

Novell Teaming began as SiteScape Forum. When Novell Acquired SiteScape in 2008, the name was changed to Novell Teaming.

Created in 2009, Novell Pulse was a communication tool based on the Google Wave Federation Protocol.[3]

Scalability

Vibe allows you to grow your Vibe installation along with your business. You can start small, with all components on a single server, then add servers and move components to remote servers as the number of active users grows.

Supported Environments

Novell Vibe is a flexible solution that runs in most server and end-user environments. All Vibe components can run on a single server for a small installation, or be spread across multiple servers in a computer cluster for a large installation.

Server

Any combination of Linux and Windows servers can run the Vibe application. Furthermore, MySQL, MS SQL, and Oracle databases are supported.

End-User Operating Systems

Windows, Linux, or Mac

Browsers

Firefox, Internet Explorer, Safari, or Chrome

Mobile

Any mobile device that has a browser can access the Vibe site. Native iOS and Android apps are available for free download in the app stores.

Key Uses

Vibe is designed to solve multiple business needs.

Knowledge Repository

Preserve knowledge that is stored on the Vibe site long after the original contributors have left the team or the company. Unlike email, information in Vibe is available to each user in the organization (assuming extra access controls have not been defined in order to keep the information private). When users leave the organization, the information is retained in Vibe to ensure that the collective knowledge of any skilled group is never lost, and is always available to the organization by performing a simple search.

Document Management

Upload, comment on, and edit documents on the Vibe site. Use version control on documents to create new versions, access previously saved version, set a maximum number of allowed versions, and more.

Microsoft Office users can create and edit Vibe documents without ever leaving Microsoft Office. Users can synchronize Vibe files with the file systems on their workstations.

Most document types are supported. All documents on the Vibe site are fully searchable.

Project Collaboration

Users can easily create their own ad hoc project teams. They can identify and gather the team members who can contribute the right expertise, knowledge, and value they need for their project.

To facilitate team productivity, team creators can create folders for the following resources where users can contribute, share ideas, and keep track of team initiatives:

  • Discussions
  • Blogs
  • Calendars
  • Files
  • Tasks and Milestones
  • Wikis
  • Surveys
  • Photos

Process Automation

Vibe administrators and users can create custom workflows to streamline important business processes, all using a built-in editor (custom development is not necessary). Vibe administrators can create workflows and implement them across the entire site, and individual folder and workspace owners can create workflows to be used in their respective folders and workspaces.

Users can enable workflows to automatically start when certain types of entries are created in the folder, when users comment on or reply to an entry, or they can configure them to be manually started by users who view the entry.

Examples of workflows include approving documents, ordering supplies, hiring new employees, requesting paid time off, and getting expense reimbursements.

Corporate Intranets

Vibe users and administrators can create custom web pages (called Landing Pages) by using a simple drag-and-drop editor. These landing pages can serve as robust, interactive pages for a corporate intranet. Access control settings determine who can view or post content.

Key Features

Vibe is a feature-rich application that can be used to accomplish many corporate and team initiatives. Key features include:

Custom Web Pages with Built-In Editor

Vibe allows users who manage workspaces and folders to create custom web pages (called Landing Pages) by using a simple drag-and-drop editor. No web development knowledge is needed. These Landing pages can benefit your workspaces and folders in two key ways:

  • Improve customization by allowing users to put a personal face on workspaces and folders in the Vibe site, while still providing the team-focused, collaborative functionality that Vibe affords.
  • Increase the accessibility and visibility of the information that is most critical to the team or organization. Bring important entries or entire folders to the forefront of workspaces, ensuring that users access the information they need in a quick, efficient manner.

Security and Access Controls

Access control is how you specify which users have the right to perform which tasks in which places. Vibe uses role-based access control, and each role contains specific rights.

Access controls can be assigned at a site level by the Vibe administrator, or they can be assigned at a team level by a manager of a team workspace. For example, if a user who is managing a team workspace wants a particular user in the team to have more access rights than other team members (such as the ability to create new folders and workspaces within the team workspace), the manager can assign that user to the appropriate role.

All information created in or uploaded to Vibe is fully indexed and fully searchable. Users can quickly find information about a particular topic, locate subject-matter experts, and locate relevant workspaces and folders.

Data Quotas

Where storage is an issue, data quotas can be enabled by the Vibe administrator to limit the amount of data that is stored on the Vibe site.

Mobility

Any mobile device that has a browser can access the Vibe site. Native iOS and Android apps are available for free download in the app stores.

Desktop Synchronization

Synchronize files on the Vibe site directly to users' workstations. Users can add and modify Vibe folders directly from their workstation.

Currently supported only on Windows. Will also be supported on Mac in the near future.

Microsoft Office Integration

Work with documents on the Vibe site without ever leaving Microsoft Office. Easily browse to a document that is located on the Vibe site, open the document, edit it, then save it back to the Vibe site, directly from Microsoft Office.

Word, PowerPoint, and Excel (versions 2010 and 2007) on the Windows operating system are supported.

Interoperability

Vibe can be used in conjunction with various other software products, such as Novell Access Manager, Novell GroupWise, Skype, and YouTube. Also integrates with your LDAP directory.

Extendability

Vibe administrators can extend the Vibe software by creating software extensions, remote applications, or JAR (file format) files that enhance the power and usefulness of the Vibe software to create a truly custom experience for users.

Software Extensions

Software extensions enable third-party developers to create abilities which extend an application. Vibe administrators or Vibe developers can create custom extensions (add-ons) to enhance Vibe. For example, you might have an extension that enables Flash video support in Vibe.

Software extensions require you to make modifications to the Vibe software.

Remote Applications

A remote application is a program that runs on a remote server and delivers data for use on the Novell Vibe site (such as data from a remote database). For example, Vibe administrators or Vibe developers could set up a remote application for Twitter that displays all of a user's Twitter entries in Vibe.

Unlike creating an extension for Vibe, creating a remote application does not modify the Vibe software.

Open-Source solutions

Not all of these projects implement all of the features Novell Vibe has to offer as well as Vibe is missing some features these products have:
