==Military career==
Charles Grant was [[Commissioned officer|commissioned]] into the [[Coldstream Guards]] in 1897.<ref name=lh>[http://www.kcl.ac.uk/lhcma/cats/grant/gr20-0.htm Liddell Hart Centre for Military Archives]</ref> He served in the [[Second Boer War]] in [[South Africa]] from 1899 to 1902.<ref name=lh/>

He also served in [[World War I]] initially as a [[Major (United Kingdom)|Brigade Major]] for [[3rd Infantry Brigade (United Kingdom)|3rd Infantry Brigade]] which formed part of the [[British Expeditionary Force (World War I)|British Expeditionary Force]] deployed to [[France]] in 1914.<ref name=lh/> He was a [[General Staff Officer]] in various formations before becoming temporary [[Commander]] of [[1st Mechanised Brigade (United Kingdom)|1st Infantry Brigade]] in 1917.<ref name=lh/> In 1918 he was assigned to General Headquarters of the [[French Army]], as a liaison officer between General Sir [[Sir Henry Wilson, 1st Baronet|Henry Hughes Wilson]], [[Chief of the Imperial General Staff]] and French Marshal [[Ferdinand Foch]].<ref name=lh/>

He became [[Commanding Officer]] of 3rd Bn [[Coldstream Guards]] in 1919 moving on to join the General Staff in [[Egypt]] in 1921.<ref name=lh/> In 1925 he became [[Commander]] of 137 (Staffordshire) Brigade and in 1927 [[Commander]] of [[8th Infantry Brigade (United Kingdom)|8th Infantry Brigade]].<ref name=lh/>

In 1930 he became [[General Officer Commanding]] [[53rd (Welsh) Infantry Division|53rd (Welsh) Division]] and in 1932 [[Major-General commanding the Household Division|Major-General commanding the Brigade of Guards]] and [[General Officer Commanding]] [[London District (British Army)|London District]].<ref name=lh/> In 1937 he was appointed General Officer Commanding in Chief of [[Scottish Command]] and [[Governor of Edinburgh Castle]] retiring from that post in 1940.<ref name=lh/>
