Arma 3 (stylized to ArmA III) is an open world tactical shooter video game developed by Bohemia Interactive and expected to be released on the 30th September 2012. The game's storyline takes place in the near future, during Operation Magnitude, a military operation launched by NATO forces, who are fighting in Europe against "Eastern armies" led by Iran.[1]
Gameplay
Campaign
ARMA 3 is set in the mid-2030s, where NATO forces deployed in the Greek islands of the Aegean Sea are trying to hold off a massive Iranian military offensive from the east. During the singleplayer campaign, the player will take the role of British Special Forces soldier Captain Scott Miller. Initially, the player must survive on their own after friendly forces are defeated in a failed NATO operation. During the campaign, the player will face everything from lone wolf infiltration missions to the commanding of large scale armored operations. The player will be able to choose different objectives and weaponry (like UAVs, artillery, and air support) according to their play style.[2][3][4]
ARMA 3 takes place on the Aegean islands of Lemnos and Ai Stratis (shortened to Stratis in the game) of Greece, in the Mediterranean Sea. They will feature photo-realistic terrain and water environments. Lemnos will be the largest official terrain in the Arma series with ground area covering 270 km². The smaller island, Stratis, will expand over an area of 19 km².[5] The islands will feature over 50 villages with buildings that are both enterable and destroyable.[2]
Development
ARMA 3 will be using newest version of Bohemia Interactive's own Real Virtuality game engine. New features compared to previous Arma games include[4]:
- Enhanced mission editor
- Support for DirectX 10 and DirectX 11[6]
- 20 km view distance
- Ragdoll physics
- Physics enabled vehicle handling and environmental objects (PhysX 3[7])
- Underwater environments, vehicles and diving
- Weapon and uniform customization
- Volumetric clouds
- Hands are properly animated (for example steering a wheel of a vehicle)
- Render to Texture
- Improved lighting engine
- Support for Java
- Improved flight model from Take On Helicopters
- Support for six degrees of freedom
The developers are planning a public community alpha release in mid-late 2012. Alpha will feature a mission editor and allow modifications. It will also showcase major improvements and new features of the engine.[5]
Alleged espionage arrest on Lemnos
As reported by Greek media[8] on September 10 2012, two Czech nationals were arrested on Lemnos and charged of espionage;they have claimed to be working for Bohemia Interactive collecting pictures[8][9] and video footage for the development of Arma 3;their names are David Zapletal and Pavel Guglava[10], their employee status under Bohemia Interactive has been confirmed but the company has later officially stated that they were on the island "with the sole purpose of experiencing the island's beautiful surroundings".[11]It has to be noted that according to Greek law taking photographs et cetera of military installations is strictly prohibited for reasons of national security[12] and that the issue of this game causing potential threats to Greek national security had been brought officially to the Greek Parliament and discussed therein already in 2011.[13]It has also to be noted that Bohemia Interactive has after the arrest incident shutted down[14] access to a thread named Greek Military started on August,1st 2012 on their official forum warning them and discussing legal and other problems concerning inter alia photographing and realistic depictions of Greek military installations;a google cache of it as it appeared on September,4th 2012 though is still available.[15]
