Genevieve Atkinson is a fictional character from the CBS Daytime soap opera The Young and the Restless, portrayed by veteran actress Genie Francis since May 27, 2011. Prior to Genevieve, Francis was widely recognized for her role as Laura Spencer on on ABC's General Hospital; a role she portrayed for over three decades.

Genevieve is the mother of Cane Ashby and Caleb Atkinson (Daniel Goddard) and a deceased daughter named Samantha. She first came to Genoa City for revenge on her ex-husband, Colin Atkinson (Tristan Rogers). She has since been involved in a number of different storylines, and had relationships with leading men Jack Abbott (Peter Bergman) and Victor Newman (Eric Braeden). In September 2012, it was announced that Francis was let go from The Young and the Restless.

Character creation

Casting

Prior to her debut on the series, it was announced her character would be the mother of Cane Ashby (Daniel Goddard).[1] Francis' casting for the role was announced in March 2011, and she began filming the following month.[1] A first-look photograph of Francis on set was revealed on May 5 by Entertainment Weekly.[2] Francis expressed her gratefulness at CBS Daytime and The Young and the Restless for giving her another chance in soap opera, following her rough trot with General Hospital. She stated: "I was very grateful that someone like Y&R’s executive producer and head writer, Maria Arena Bell said, “Well, I am interested and I will write for her.” And in fact, CBS really embraced me in a very nice way. They gave me lots of press. They worked hard at creating a character. I could not have asked for more from them. I really couldn’t have. I am very grateful to them at trying to re-launch me on a soap!"[3] She had also stated she loved working with Tristan Rogers (Colin) and Daniel Goddard (Cane), her onscreen ex-husband and son; and said: "[On set] I was welcomed by open arms, particular by Jess Walton (Jill). I was greeted by such warmth right away from Jeanne Cooper, who could not have been sweeter and nicer."[3] Additionally, Francis voiced her displeasure with General Hospital and ABC Daytime in addition for not casting her back in her iconic role in the same interview.[3] Francis was more happy about portraying Genevieve than returning to General Hospital, as she was apparently "tired of playing the victim at every turn, that she wanted any new character to be strong and have the opportunity to grow".[4] According to Yahoo!, in August 2011 Francis took a leave of absence from the soap to focus on another role in the hallmark movie series The Note.[4] In light of how long she would be gone or if she would return, Soaps In Depth said: "the actress not only will be back, but there's some major storylines coming up as Genevieve becomes even more woven into the fabric of Genoa City."[5][6]

In 2012, Francis was nominated for the Daytime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actress at the 39th Daytime Emmy Awards. "I was so surprised, I couldn't believe it," Francis said. "I feel like I've had tremendous good fortune with this new show, and I'm thrilled to be part of them."[7] Further speaking about her nomination with soap opera journalist Michael Fairman, Francis stated: "Y&R’s executive producer and head writer, Maria Bell, called me at 6:45 in the morning. I was up with the kids getting them ready for school. It was a very nice surprise. And the funny thing about it is; it took 31 years as Laura on GH to get the Emmy finally … crazy, right?"[8]

Development

Francis has described Genevieve as "harsh", and said that her past tragedy is the reason she acts this way.[8] In an interview with AOL, Francis said: "although tragic things have happened to her, she is not tragic."[9] The show's official website describes her relationship with Colin Atkinson (Tristan Rogers) as "twisted" and "confusing".[10] Despite this, the character happily pursued a romantic relationship with Jack Abbott (Peter Bergman).[10] Speaking about the relationship, Francis stated: "I would like to continue to work with him because he is just so good, and Peter is so nice. I did do a couple scenes with him that I was really proud of, and they were right before the two of them make love for the first time. There were two scenes where Genevieve bares her soul to him. And through that, the audience hopefully got more insight into who this woman really is."[3] Genevieve ultimately ruined their relationship when she secretly purchased "Beauty of Nature" through her holding company, FMN—which Jack was working to take over, too. Once Jack discovered the truth, he broke up their engagement and sued her for fraud.[11] Genevieve later told Jack that she will give him Beauty of Nature if he would give their relationship another try.[12] This never worked out. Genevieve has also had a rivalry with Jill; as Jill previously believed she was Ethan's ("Cane") mother.[13]

Departure

In September 2012, it was announced that Francis was to leave The Young and the Restless.[14][15][16][17] According to Soaps In Depth and TVLine, the actress was let go due to budgetary reasons.[14][18] Jillian Bowe of Daytime Confidential however, wrote: "I heard the daytime veteran's tenure on the show wasn't well-received by the brass at CBS and Sony."[16] Francis then spoke about her departure in an interview with Soap Opera Digest. When asked how she found out she was being let go, Francis said:

I finished my scenes a week ago and [Supervising Producer] Tony Morina, who is a very lovely man, came down from the booth and said, "Jill wants you to come up to her office." I said, "Should I call first?" and he said, "No, just go up." Then I looked at him and said, "Am I fired [laughs]?" He just went, "I don't know." So, I went up to talk to Jill and she was actually very kind. Actually, I think she was mortified. I don't think she wanted to be in that position to tell me that. Nobody does. We both said we were sorry that we wouldn't have the chance to work together.[19]

When asked if she thought the door would be left open for a return, the actress said: "I don't think my character is going to be killed off, at least they said she wasn't. I'm still Cane's mother, so you never know what can happen in the future."[19] In addition, Francis was asked if she would be open to reprising Genevieve, and she said: "I think I'd be more interested if they had some story idea. I actually really love coming in and doing the little short stories in six weeks. That's a lot of fun for me. I did it on GH for a while and I loved that."[19] The actress also commented that her job on the soap "put her back on her feet", "lifted her up and surrounded her with love".[19] In closing, Soap Opera Digest asked Francis what she would like to say to her fans, saying: "I think Y&R fans should be comforted to know that the people they're taking off the canvas have been on different shows. So, they're making a strong statement that, "We're going to concentrate now on our core historic characters," and that's a good thing. That's good news for all the fans. This new writer, by all reports, is just really fantastic but selfishly, I wish that I could hang around to have the benefit of this ability. Things go 'round and come 'round in this business, so you just never know."[19]

Backstory

2011–

Genevieve arrived in Genoa City intent on revenge for the "death" of her son, Cane Ashby (Daniel Goddard). It was revealed that it was Cane's twin brother Caleb Atkinson (Daniel Goddard) who was shot in front of the church, meaning Cane was alive. This was all part of Genevieve's devious revenge scheme against her husband Colin Atkinson (Tristan Rogers), who Genevieve believed killed their daughter, Samantha. Genevieve led Colin to her home where a shrine was set up for Samantha. She later tried to push him off a balcony, as he was trying to abduct their grandchildren Charlie (Parker Rose Curry) and Matilda (Jordan Lemnah). Colin's wife, Jill Abbott (Jess Walton), saved him from his fall. At the hospital, it was revealed Colin and Genevieve were married, and his marriage to Jill was declared invalid. Colin is sent to prison. Genevieve tried to bond with her grandchildren, however Cane's wife Lily Winters (Christel Khalil) doesn't want her to, believing she is dangerous. Her marriage to Colin then legally ends. She begins flirting with Jack Abbott (Peter Bergman), which eventually leads into a relationship. Jack also hires her at Jabot Cosmetics.

Genevieve locked Colin in a wine cellar, and he wanted revenge on her. He planned an explosion that would have killed her and Gloria Bardwell (Judith Chapman), whom he also had a grudge against. The plan goes awry when Lily and Genevieve's unseen housekeeper Myrna (who ends up being the insane Patty Williams (Stacy Haiduk) are the explosion's victims. Colin is arrested for attempted murder and deported to Australia. Patty, acting has Myrna, who has a history of obsession with Jack, is enraged because of Jack and Genevieve's relationship. She claims she is shy and covers her face in public. Jack and Genevieve are engaged.

When Victor Newman (Eric Braeden) turns himself in for murdering Diane Jenkins (Maura West), his son Adam Newman (Michael Muhney) takes over Newman Enterprises and decides to sell Beauty of Nature to the highest bidder, planning to call Tucker and tell him how much to bid in order to win. However, he fails to inform Tucker, being seduced by Sharon Newman (Sharon Case). This way, Genevieve's bid, as head of her own company FMN, is the highest and she becomes the new owner of Beauty of Nature, rising Jack's suspicion regarding the source of all her money. Later, her son Cane reads an article of FMN, which stands for Forget Me Not. Having a flicker of suspicion and remembrance, he heads to his mother's empty house to find "Forget Me Not" engraved on the golden pot that contains his sister Samantha's ashes. Genevieve then realizes, hours before her wedding, that she can no longer marry Jack as she wasn't loyal to him. She writes him a Dear John letter and asks a delivery man to deliver it to the church where they were supposed to marry, however Patty knocks him out before he can deliver the letter to Jack. Patty then dresses in Genevieve's wedding dress, which she stole from her house, and walks down the aisle to the altar with her face covered. When Jack uncovers her face, he assumes it is Emily (Stacy Haiduk), Jack's ex-fiancee who is identical to Patty. Patty is enraged by this, and reveals that she is Patty before shooting Jack in the stomach.[20] It was finally found out that "Myrna" was in fact Patty.[20] Upon going to the hospital, it was revealed that FMN is Genevieve's company and she is in ownership of Beauty of Nature. Jack and his friends and family rejected Genevieve.[21][22] She found solace in Victor.

Genevieve agrees to relinquish power of Beauty of Nature only if he gives their relationship another chance.[23] He accepts and agrees to marry her.[24] Genevieve, still under the impression that Jack still loved her, overheard Jack telling Nikki Newman (Melody Thomas Scott) that he doesn't love or like Genevieve and is using her for Beauty of Nature.[25] He left her before their wedding. Genevieve has sex with Victor and sells Beauty of Nature back to him.[26][27] The SEC later begin investigating Genevieve as to where she got the funds to buy Beauty of Nature.[28] It was later revealed that she had an affair with Tucker before she ran off to Australia to marry Colin many years ago.[29] The SEC subsequently took away all of her assets, including her estate. After being prevented from getting into a secret Swiss back-account, Genevieve asked Kevin Fisher (Greg Rikaart), known for his hacking capabilities, to find out who was stealing from her.[30] Genevieve's money later appeared in front of Cane's door and her room was the GCAC was trashed. There are possibilities that her daughter, Samantha, could be alive and doing all of this to her.[31] When Victor goes missing, Tucker requests Genevieve's help; and promises her something if she does. She ends up finding Victor with amnesia, believing his name is "Christian".[32][33]
