if i do wrong editing to any wikipedia articles, so what will happen to me?

if i do wrong editing to any wikipedia articles, so what will happen to me? i know nothing will happen to me, wikipedia just blocks me from editing thats all. but what about this, somebody edited the John Seigenthaler article in a wrong way leads to "Seigenthaler incident". finally what happened to the person who edited in wrong way? Ram nareshji (talk) 04:36, 1 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Good-faith edits that unintentially violate policy are simply reverted. See Wikipedia:Vandalism for how deliberate problem edits are defined and dealt with here. The Siegenthaler incident was unusual because it involved the biography of a living person, so might have had wider implications both for Wikipedia itself and for the person concerned (who had also drawn his employer into the matter by using a workplace computer to make the offending edit, and who almost lost his job as a result). See Libel. Because we don't have a crystal ball we cannot predict the future, but a Google search will show you various cases where the law has been invoked to deal with user-generated content - on sites like Facebook, for example. To avoid any such problems when editing Wikipedia, you can ensure all your edits are neutral in tone and verifiable via a reliable source. - Karenjc 12:15, 1 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hmm. Possibly The Prototype (film) and this is a question about a concept akin to WP:CRYSTAL?---Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 12:34, 1 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

WikiQuestions

I was on Jimmy Wales' talk page and I suggested a new wiki, WikiQuestions. Jimmy hasn't replied yet, but other users have. One suggested to come her since I've only joined recently. I want to know, where do I put the proposal for this? This is not WikiAnswers and there is no other language with this.--Lucky102 (talk) 19:31, 1 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Lucky102. Proposals for new Wikimedia projects are made at Meta-Wiki, the global community site for the Wikimedia Foundation's projects and related projects. See specifically m:Proposals for new projects. An IP address actually created a page there called m:Wikiquestions, but it is an empty page and the person never followed-up, so it's impossible to tell what exactly they were intending. Have you considered that this might be redundant with our already well-established and well-staffed reference desk?--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 20:30, 1 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, Fughettaboutit. What do you mean by your last comment?--Lucky102 (talk) 20:48, 1 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I think Fughettaboutit means that our reference desk is a well-established site (or set of sites) where people ask questions and others answer them as best they can. Did you mean something other than that with your proposal? --ColinFine (talk) 21:26, 1 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]
You only revealed the name "WikiQuestions" and not what the wiki should do. Fuhghettaboutit probably wondered whethered your suggestion might be similar to Wikipedia's reference desk where users can ask and answer questions not about Wikipedia. PrimeHunter (talk) 21:26, 1 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Exactly as to both. Without anything else to go on but the title "WikiQuestions", I think most people would assume your idea is the creation of question and answer Wikimedia project, which is what the reference desk is, albeit, subsumed within the Wikipedia project.--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 00:05, 2 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]
By WikiQuestions, I mean a Wiki that users could post a question about something, for example, why is the sky blue, or, What date was Usain Bolt born? etc.--Lucky102 (talk) 15:07, 2 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Well, that still sounds very similar to the existing reference desk. Gandalf61 (talk) 15:27, 2 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Should I put it up for creation? If I do, do you want to be mentioned?--Lucky102 (talk) 15:52, 3 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]
NO! Lucky, you seem to be the only one in this discussion who doesn't understand that we don't need a separate WikiQuestions, since it would apparently duplicate the purpose of our already-flourishing Reference Desk service. --Orange Mike | Talk 17:50, 3 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Alright then.--Lucky102 (talk) 19:29, 3 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Adding a Proof to Apollonius' Theorem page

The following discussion is closed. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on the appropriate discussion page. No further edits should be made to this discussion.

I am a brand new member. I joined because I would like to add content to the Proof section to Apollonius" Theorem. The current proof depends on trigonometric identities, and I would like to add a more basic one that only depends on geometry. I will need to include a reference diagram and mathematical equations. How do I go about doing this? Thanks, SalSpinella (talk) 20:30, 1 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Already answered at Wikipedia:Help_desk#Apollonius' Theorem. Please keep the discussion there.--ukexpat (talk) 20:33, 1 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

finding the creation date of a wiki page - Ted Kennedy

I am trying to find the date of when Ted Kennedy's wiki page was created. I also would be interested to know where the initial information came from to form the entry? 50.135.17.143 (talk) 21:47, 1 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

At any article, you can click on "history" to see the list of revisions to the page. You can then click on "earliest" to see the oldest revisions, rather than the most recent ones. The first revision of the article, the "original" article, will be at the bottom. Clicking on the date-links will show you what the article looked like at the time. Someguy1221 (talk) 21:58, 1 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Click the "View history" tab at top of the article and then "earliest" to see [1]. It was created with one line [2] in February 2003. It has been edited thousands of times since then. PrimeHunter (talk) 22:06, 1 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Missing contributions

Hi, I made nine image contributions on 9/30/2012, but they are not listed under my contributions as of 10/2/2012. They were listed a few days ago. How do I determine where they went or how/why they are not there. Thanks. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Snowilli (talkcontribs) 12:54, 2 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

You'll find them listed in your contribution record in Wikimedia Commons, not here in the English Wikipedia. - David Biddulph (talk) 13:02, 2 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

The Report On Manufactures

Reading the Report on Manufactures, you will notice that the Report was requested by Congress, and he was delayed by other work in making the Report. It was a fairly long and detailed plan, that advocated an independent national economy with an industrial base supported by American agriculture. Great Britain had a twenty year lead on the U.S. developing their industrial base, and it was to protect our industrial base from being undercut by the British, who had a fully developed industrial base! it was also designed as an independent source for weapons for national defense! — Preceding unsigned comment added by 99.37.185.124 (talk) 22:26, 2 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

OK. --Demiurge1000 (talk) 22:28, 2 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I'm guessing you must be suggesting adding something to the article Report on Manufactures. You're welcome to add to the article, but only if you have reliable sources for what you are adding. What you have said in the paragraph above sounds as if it may be original research, which is not permitted in Wikipedia. If you are not sure, you might make the suggestion on the article's talk page. --ColinFine (talk) 13:20, 3 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Linking to non-free content

If I have a hard copy of an article that is not online, can I upload it to Wikipedia as a pdf file then link to the pdf file in a reference? Or should I simply use the article citation as my reference? The article is copyrighted and non-free. I read the policy WP:NFC and I think it's allowed, but I want to be certain. Kmzundel (talk) 13:33, 3 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Assuming that the article has in fact been published in a reliable source, it's not necessary to make it available online (verifiability doesn't require that sources be instantly available online). You can cite the source without providing a link to it. Yunshui  14:10, 3 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you! Kmzundel (talk) 14:20, 3 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]
But please use the appropriate {{Cite}} template, completing as many of the parameters as you can, so that anyone who wishes to verify the source has enough details to do so.--ukexpat (talk) 14:33, 3 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Absolutely. I'm a librarian. :-) Kmzundel (talk) 14:41, 3 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hi,

I'd like to use this image, linked from this page, in a wikipedia article.

But I can't work out its copyright status.

It's in a press release, here (although in a lower resolution). Press releases are by definition intended for others to use - does that make it public domain? (the low-rez version at least).

The image seems to have been created by the Oklahoma State Senate, so I thought it might be noncopyright, so I looked at Copyright status of work by the U.S. government, and it seemed like my guess was wrong, because that doesn't apply to works created by states as opposed to the federal government.

So I looked at Copyright status of work by U.S. state governments and also Oklahoma, and I'm none the wiser. I also took a look at List of U.S. state legal codes, and from that article followed this link - but it's 404 not found.

Erm, help?

I'm not an American so I'm not super-familiar with US copyright law as applied to state government.

(First I looked for existing free-use images of this individual, can't find any. Alternative images of this individual would be equally useful).

Thank you in advance.

--Mknjbhvgcf (talk) 20:36, 3 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Issuing a press release does not waive copyright in the contents thereof. --Orange Mike | Talk 20:47, 3 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]
OK. Any idea on the 'created by Oklahoma state government' possibility? I.e. is information created by OK State copyright-free? --Mknjbhvgcf (talk) 21:20, 3 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I'm looking at the state's main website, and right there at the bottom of the page is a big fat "Copyright © 2012 State of Oklahoma ". --Orange Mike | Talk 21:29, 3 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]
You might try contacting Sen Ivester's office. Tell them that Wikipedia requires a photo that can be reused by anyone for anything. —teb728 t c 23:47, 3 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Topic is covered

if the page does not exist on wikipedia but topic is covvered can i write about it?and how can i create a link for my lecture to view my work?and how can i make my talk and username become blue if it's purple? Emilly212022318 (talk) 11:36, 4 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Can you explain a little more. Do you mean to create a page about a topic which is a section in an already existing article? Regarding your second query, where do you want to create a link? and regarding your third query, the link of user name and talk page becomes purple if you visit the page (just like every other hyperlink in webpages). --Anbu121 (talk me) 11:52, 4 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Do you mean like User:Pgallert/General dealer, which is already covered under general store? --Orange Mike | Talk 13:13, 4 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Deleted

What constitutes an entry getting deleted? The only thing that is clear is that someone deleted my entry to the page sighting incorrect format.

What does that mean? How can I get my entry back up on the sight? I thought it was a user edit interface?

Please Advise Jazziz995 (talk) 15:32, 4 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Your only edits were to dump a huge chunk of promotional garbage into the article The Voice (U.S.), which read like it was copied directly from somebody's press release, but credited no sources. It even included junk about what brand of cymbals the drummer endorses! Such material has no place in an encyclopedia, where we demand neutral point of view and reliable sources, and where advertising is forbidden; and was properly removed immediately. --Orange Mike | Talk 15:46, 4 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]
The content added there talked about a band called 'Voice house', which has absolutely no connections with The Voice (U.S.). The content itself looked like a separate article. Jazziz995, if you were trying to create a new article, you can do so at Wikipedia:Articles for creation. But remember to write it in a neutral point of view with reliable sources. --Anbu121 (talk me) 16:00, 4 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Actually more likely to be referring to the "house band" on the show, ie the resident band, just as the CBS Orchestra is Letterman's "house band".--ukexpat (talk) 16:41, 4 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

International Bank is simply International Bank

International Bank of Washington does not exist. International Bank was a private merchant bank located at 1625 I St. NW Washington,D.C., just a few blocks from the White House. Source: The obituary of John F. Kiernan, The Washington Post Times Herald of May 13, 1959. The obituary states: John F. Kiernan was Vice President of International Bank in Washington, D.C. at the time of his death on May 11, 1959. International Bank was a private merchant bank that was located at 1625 I St. NW, just a few blocks from the White House. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 50.140.36.200 (talk) 15:44, 4 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Interesting, but what exactly do you need help with? Do you want to write an article about this bank? If so, you'd probably need more sources than just an obituary that doesn't mention any details about the bank. Do we already have an article on the bank that gets the name wrong? Then you'd have to provide a little more context for us to fix that; an International Bank of Washington article currently does not exist. Huon (talk) 16:06, 4 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

A mistaken year of author published of Abdomenea minimiflora just below on the picture for Binomial name

Good day,

To day, I've found a mistaken year published of Abdominea minimiflora just below on the picture for Binomial name. It is written "Abdominea minimiflora (Hook. f) J.J.S. (1914), and it is must be "Abdominea minimiflora (Hook. f.) J.J.S. (1917). I rfered reference from Holttum, R.E. 1957. A Revised Flora of Malaya, Volume I: Orchids of Malaya. Are we talking about the article Khairpur, Pakistan? It contains a listing of local tribes, but provides no sources at all to corroborate this. Wikipedia pages are not written by consulting the concerned people. Articles are written using information published through reliable independent sources. --Anbu121 (talk me) 13:31, 6 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]
If you make your suggestion on the talk page of the relevant article, you are more likely to find an editor there who is interested in working on that article. --ColinFine (talk) 18:57, 6 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I don't think the article exits. There is only a single sentence about the person at Bawana. Initially, it was linked to a wrong article, which I have removed now. --Anbu121 (talk me) 19:22, 6 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Article about father

According to the guidelines, one should not write and post articles about friends. I am working on an article about my father, who was a writer, and is now deceased. It is a very straightforward article, listing the facts about his life and work, and should not be controversial. Would it be acceptable for me to post such an article? Thanks. Healthpro22 (talk) 16:27, 7 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

The guidelines on conflict of interest do not forbid this, but they discourage it. If you have done your best to be neutral, have referenced independent reliable sources for all the information in it, and ensured that the article establishes your father's notability, then you can post it. But I would strongly advise you to put it for review, declaring your conflict of interest, and be ready to accept other editors' views about the article's contents and tone. --ColinFine (talk) 16:50, 7 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

This page is for questions about editing Wikipedia. Please consider asking this question at the Reference desk. They specialize in knowledge questions and will try to answer any question in the universe (except how to use Wikipedia, since that is what this Help Desk is for). Just follow the link, select the relevant section, and ask away. You could always try searching Wikipedia for an article related to the topic you want to know more about. I hope this helps. --Orange Mike | Talk 16:09, 8 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

In the article titled Jung Myun Seok one of the statements which includes a citation is factually incorrect. Specifically it mentions that Mr Jung was a former member of the Unification church. He was never a member of the Unification church. How do we delete/fix this factual error?

thanks MrTownCar (talk) 18:21, 8 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

If there were such an article, you would discuss this on the article's talk page (i.e., Talk:Jung Myun Seok). --Orange Mike | Talk 18:44, 8 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Jung Myung Seok, I think. The assertion about the UC is cited to this article. I believe CNRS to be a reliable source, but the way I'm reading it, the article doesn't overtly state that Jung Myung Seok was ever a member of the UC, just that he founded a dissident sect, so it may not support the assertion. Can somebody else take a look? - Karenjc 18:57, 8 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]
