"Enough Said" is a song performed by American recording artist Aaliyah. Featuring additional vocals by Canadian rapper Drake, it is taken from Aaliyah's yet-untitled second posthumous album, expected to be released on Blackground Records in 2013.[1] Originally recorded prior to the singer's death in August 2001, Drake finished the track along with producer Noah "40" Shebib in 2012.[2] Released to Blackground Soundcloud account on August 5, 2012. it has since reached number 48 on the United States Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs Billboard chart.[2] It was sent to US Urban and Rhythmic radio stations on August 21, 2012.[3][4]
Background
After the release of three multi-platinum selling albums Age Ain't Nothing but a Number (1994), One In a Million (1996) and Aaliyah (2001) Aaliyah was involved in a plane crash on August 25, 2001, at 6:45 pm (EST), Aaliyah and various members of the record company boarded a twin-engine Cessna 402B (registration N8097W) at the Marsh Harbour Airport in Abaco Islands, The Bahamas, to travel to the Opa-locka Airport in Florida, after they completed filming the music video for the single "Rock the Boat".[5] They had a flight scheduled the following day, August 26, but with filming finishing early, Aaliyah and her entourage were eager to return to the United States and made the decision to leave immediately. The designated airplane was smaller than the Cessna 404 in which they had originally flown. The whole party and all of the equipment were accommodated on board.[6] As a result, when the aircraft attempted to depart, it was over its maximum takeoff weight by 700 pounds (320 kg) and was carrying one excess passenger, according to its certification.[7] The plane crashed shortly after takeoff, about 200 feet (60 m) from the runway.[5] Aaliyah and the eight others on board, pilot Luis Morales III, hair stylist Eric Forman, Anthony Dodd, security guard Scott Gallin, video producer Douglas Kratz, stylist Christopher Maldonado, and Blackground Records employees Keith Wallace and Gina Smith, were all killed.[8]
After Aaliyah's death, a posthumous compilation album entitled I Care 4 U was on released December 10, 2002 which featured both album cuts and previously unreleased tracks and demos, recorded between the years of 1993 and 2001. Along with her hit singles, a number of shelved tracks were included on the album, including the singles "Miss You", "Don't Know What to Tell Ya", and "Come Over". In 2005, a compilation album entitled Ultimate Aaliyah was released. The album was made up of two CD's The first compact disc was a greatest hits compilation, including all of Aaliyah's biggest and minor United States hits. The second disc titled "Are You Feelin' Me?" compiles several of Aaliyah's tracks that were included on both soundtrack albums and on studio albums for labelmate Timbaland. Seven years later on August 5, 2012, "Enough Said" was released online. The song was produced by Noah "40" Shebib and features rapper Drake.[9] Jomo Hankerson, spoke on the single saying " Enough Said really kind of came sooner than we thought it was going to come, so it's really the beginning of the creative process for us. We've got a record out while we're still creating the project.[10]
Critical reception
"Enough Said" received mainly positive reviews from music critics; however, many felt that Drake's feature on the song was unneeded.[11] Jessica Sager of PopCrush said: "The track sounds like traditional Aaliyah, with the stunner’s signature smooth, soft vocals," while also pointing out that: "some would argue that there are some elements missing that would otherwise make it a classic Aaliyah track — and those elements are Timbaland and Missy Elliott."[12] Robbie Daw of the website Idolator expressed disappointment in Drake's feature on the song, writing: "We get it — you’re the shit, Drake. But, honestly, this is not the “tribute” we would have liked to hear."[13] The Huffington Post noted how fans of Aaliyah had also expressed through Twitter how disappointed they were not only about Drake's verses, but the fact that he was involved with the song and not Timbaland or Missy Elliot.[14] Jody Rosen of Rolling Stone wrote: "Aaliyah fans reacted violently to the release of "Enough Said," in which a new beat, and some Drake rapping, are grafted to a vocal by the late singer. Drake's rap feels like a desecration: desultory boasting, pointless "wass ups," slapped on like gaudy graffiti tags."[15]
