Ana Bailão (born ca. 1976)[1] is a Canadian politician who was elected to Toronto City Council in the 2010 city council election to succeed Adam Giambrone in Ward 18 on on October 25, 2010.[2]
Background
Bailão was born in Vila Franca de Xira in Portugal and a former resident of Alenquer Municipality, Bailão moved to Canada and settled in Davenport with her family at the age of 15. She attended West Toronto Collegiate and then the University of Toronto where she received a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology and European Studies.
Politics
In 2003, Bailão who worked as an assistant to city councillor Mario Silva put her name forward as a candidate to replace him in the election that year. She ran on a platform focusing on environmental issues, tenants rights and reduced property taxes for seniors.[3] She lost to Adam Giambrone by 1,260 votes.[4]
In 2010, she ran again in the same ward to replace Giambrone who had entered the mayoralty race to replace outgoing mayor David Miller. Bailão who described herself as "centre-left, maybe centre" ran on a campaign of efficient service delivery and community involvement in decision making.[5] She beat Kevin Beaulieu, an assistant to Giambrone by 1,366 votes.[6]
In 2012, Bailão led a working group to look into problems with the city's community housing stock. Earlier in the year, mayor Rob Ford had proposed to sell off 706 city owned houses to pay for repairs. Bailão's group issued a report that recommended selling only 55 houses. She said, "We recognize that some of our proposals might not be popular. Some might want the status quo, while others will think we should have gone further. But we think we have found the right balance."[7]
Drunk driving
In the early morning of October 16, 2012, Bailão was charged with driving while intoxicated and driving with a blood alcohol content over the legal limit. Her office has issued a statement confirming the charges and said that no further comment would be issued as this matter is before the courts.[8][9][10] On 17 October 2012 she announced she would fight the charges and remain on council despite the risk she had put the public through. [11] A spokesperson from MADD Canada described her as "deplorable"[12][13] and expressed concern about the message that her indifference to the seriousness of the charges would send. [14][15]
