The Walking Dead is an episodic point-and-click role-playing adventure game based on Robert Kirkman's The Walking Dead comic book series for iOS, Mac OS X, Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. The game was developed by Telltale Games.[8] The Walking Dead was planned to be released in the last months of 2011[9] but due to the production and development of the project, the game was held back to early 2012. The game will consist of five episodes, with the first episode released in April 2012 across all platforms with the exception of the iOS version.
In addition, some characters from the original comic book series make appearances in-game, including Hershel Greene and Glenn. Players meet them before the plot in the comic book begins to take place.[10]
On July 6, 2012, Telltale announced that a second season will follow the initial five-episode series.[11]
Gameplay
The Walking Dead is a point-and-click adventure game, played from a third-person perspective. The player can examine and interact with characters and items. The player must make use of inventory items and the environment; the player character often has limited time to do so and can die in the process. Quick time events are used for particular action scenes. The game also features role-playing elements[12][13], including moral decisions, which have consequences in relationship with other characters.
The game is told from the point of view of a new character named Lee Everett.[14] Kirkman has said that, unlike typical zombie games such as Left 4 Dead, it will focus more on characterization and emotion than action.[15]
Episodes
The game will be released in five episodes.[10] Episode 1 was released the week of April 24, 2012, Episode 2 was released the week of June 27, 2012, while Episode 3 was released on August 28, 2012 for PSN, and August 29, 2012 for XBLA, PC and Mac. Shortly after the third episode was released, it was announced that the game would be available in disc format at the end of the season. [16] For the iOS release, the episodes can be pre-ordered and a 25% discount on all episodes combined or they can be purchased individually when they become available for download. [16] Episode 4 was released on the 9th of October 2012 for PS3 and the 10th for the XBLA and PC/Mac. Telltale have also announced that a full retail version of all five episodes will be available for consoles from December 4th. [16]
Characters
Numerous characters appear throughout the game. Lee Everett (voiced by Dave Fennoy[17]), the primary protagonist of the series, is a native of Macon and a former university professor convicted for killing a congressman sleeping with his wife.[18] Lee eventually finds and becomes a father figure to Clementine (voiced by Melissa Hutchinson[19]), a young first grader. Lee and Clementine encounter a family from Fort Lauderdale, Florida including Kenny (voiced by Gavin Hammon[20]), a fisherman who prioritizes his family;[21] Katjaa, Kenny's wife of Belgian descent who works as a veterinarian (voiced by Cissy Jones[22]);[23] and Kenny Jr., most commonly known as "Duck", is Kenny and Katjaa's son.[23] The five join a survivor group led by Lilly Caul (voiced by Nicki Rapp[24]), a woman formerly stationed on the Robins Air Force Base, and one of the characters that has also appeared in the comic series.[25] Lilly's group consists of multiple survivors, consisting of: Larry (voiced by Terry McGovern[26]), Lilly's aggressive and judgmental yet well-intentioned father and retired Army commander who knows Lee's past;[27] Carley (voiced by Nicole Vigil[28]) a quick-thinking regional news reporter who is also aware of Lee's crimes;[25] Doug (voiced by Sam Joan[29]), a resourceful and logical information systems technician;[27] and Glenn (voiced by Nick Herman[30]), a former pizza delivery boy who also originates from the comic series.[31] In the second episode, two more survivors join the group: Mark (voiced by Mark Middleton[32]), a survivor who used to work at the Air Force;[33] and Ben Paul (voiced by Trevor Hoffman[34]), a high school student rescued by Lee, Mark and Kenny, who reveals an integral part of the game's story. In Episode 3, "Long Road Ahead," more characters are introduced, Chuck and a married couple named Omid and Christa. Chuck is a level-headed homeless man who lived in a boxcar of the train. He joins the main group. Episode 4, "Around Every Corner," like Episode 3, introduces more characters: Molly, an ex citizen of a survivalist town called Crawford who carries an ice ax that she names Hilda and Vernon, a doctor and leader of a group of cancer survivors hiding in the morgue of a hospital.
Plot
Episode 1: A New Day
History teacher Lee Everett has been arrested for allegedly killing a state senator who was sleeping with his wife. While leaving Atlanta with an officer to be placed in prison, their police cruiser hits a zombie - or "Walker" as they are referred to in the series - and crashes off the highway. Lee regains consciousness sometime later, and finds the officer dead; when taking his keys to uncuff himself, the officer reanimates and Lee kills him with his shotgun. Seeking help, Lee enters a local house, where he meets a young girl named Clementine. Clementine's parents were in Savannah before the outbreak, and after hearing a tearful farewell from Clementine's mother on an answering machine, and killing Clementine's reanimated babysitter, Lee determines that her parents are dead and decides to care for her. Lee also meets Shawn Greene and his friend, who take Lee and Clementine to his family farm run by his father, Hershel Greene. There Lee meets another family, consisting of a couple Kenny and Katjaa, and their young son Duck. After failing to save Shawn from a walker attack, Lee, Clementine and Kenny's family are banished from the farm by Hershel.
The group heads to Macon, Georgia, where they are saved by another group of survivors led by a woman named Lilly, who are taking refuge in a drug store owned by Lee's parents. There is a brief argument with Lilly's father, Larry, as he believes Duck has been bitten and infected, before Larry succumbs to a heart attack that requires medication locked away in a secure storage room. With some investigation, Lee learns that his parents were killed by walkers. Another member of the group, Glenn, decides to head for a nearby motel to siphon some gasoline but becomes stranded, forcing Lee and news reporter Carley to rescue him. Glenn makes them stay and help another trapped survivor named Irene, but she is revealed to be bitten and commits suicide after stealing Carley's gun. After returning, Lee and IT technician Doug head out to find the keys for the pharmacy, and Lee is forced to kill his reanimated brother in order to retrieve them. Entering the storage room sounds the burglar alarm, attracting many walkers and forcing the group to abandon the store. Lee then saves either Carley or Doug from the walkers before departing. Larry, having received his medication, punches Lee in the face in an effort to prevent him from escaping, but Kenny rescues him.
The survivors gather at the motel. Upon hearing over the radio that Atlanta is overrun, Glenn announces he will be returning there to see if he can help his friends and family. Clementine tearfully tells Lee that the walkie talkie she would use to contact her parents was broken during the escape from the pharmacy. Larry informs Lee that he is aware of Lee's conviction as a murderer, and promises to tell the whole group if anything happens to Lilly or Clementine. The episode ends with the group hopeful about their new refuge until the electricity suddenly shuts off.
Episode 2: Starved for Help
Three months pass, and the survivors' food has begun to run low, and Lilly and Kenny are competing to be group leader. A new member, Mark, has joined the group and is hunting for game with Lee when they come across two high school students, Travis and Ben, and their teacher, David. David is caught in a bear trap with no safety release, and Lee must choose to either amputate his leg in order to save him, or leave him behind. Saving David leads to Travis being eaten, while leaving him results in Travis being mortally wounded grabbing Mark's gun, forcing the group to take him instead. David/Travis is returned to camp, only to die and reanimate as a walker; Ben, the lone surviving student, reveals the dead can become walkers regardless of bites.
Brothers Andrew and Danny St. John soon arrive, and invite the survivors to stay at their dairy farm, hoping to trade food for gasoline. Lee takes a portion of the group to inspect the farm. As they mingle with the brothers and their mother, Brenda St. John, Carley/Doug and Ben are sent to bring the rest of the group over for dinner while Lee and Mark are asked to patrol the electric fence, which keeps the walkers away. During this, they are attacked by bandits and Mark is hit in the shoulder with an arrow; Brenda brings Mark inside to treat his wound while the brothers ask Lee to help get rid of the bandits. Lee and Danny later stumble onto a camp containing a deranged woman named Jolene, who threatens them with a crossbow and whose daughter had been kidnapped by the same bandits. Either Lee shoots her dead, or Danny to shoots her before she can reveal something about the dairy.
As dinner is prepared, the St. John family's suspicious behavior finally leads Lee and Kenny to investigate; Lee finds a blood-soaked slaughter room in the back of the barn, and then Mark, who has had both his legs amputated to be served for supper. After confronting the St. Johns, Lee, Kenny, Clementine, Lilly, and Larry are locked in the barn's meat locker. Larry collapses after a heart attack, and Kenny, believing Larry will shortly reanimate as a walker, demands they euthanize him; regardless of who Lee helps, Kenny crushes Larry's head with a salt lick. Clementine escapes the meat locker through an opened AC duct and frees the others. Lee overpowers Danny and decides whether to spare or kill him after he falls into a bear traps without a safety release, which the St. Johns had planted to catch other survivors to eat. Lee saves Katjaa from Brenda by making her back into reach of Mark, who is now a walker. After rescuing Duck, Lee gets into a fight with Andrew and will either kill or spare him as walkers overrun the farm.
Leaving the dairy, the group happens upon an abandoned car full of supplies. In it they find batteries to fit a camera that Lee found at Jolene's camp; it reveals that Jolene was observing the motel, and she implies that the bandits, without food from the dairy, will soon become an imminent threat.
Episode 3: Long Road Ahead
One week after episode two, the survivors continue to live in the motor inn. After supplies are found to be missing, Lee finds a bag of medicine and food in a grate outside the wall of the motel; the inn is then attacked by a group of bandits and then walkers, but the survivors manage to escape in the now-fixed RV. During the attack, a walker attacks Duck and Katjaa, leaving Katjaa with a head injury and Duck bitten by a Walker.
Whilst on the RV, Lilly becomes more suspicious of Ben and Carley/Doug. After the RV hits a Walker, the group stops while Kenny removes the walker from under the RV. After an argument between Lilly, Ben, Doug/Carley and Lee; depending on if Doug or Carley is alive, Lilly either shoots Carley for her comments, or tries to shoot Ben, only for Doug to get hit saving him. The player has a choice of leaving Lilly behind to die, or putting her in the RV to punish later. Katjaa and Kenny reveal to Lee that Duck was bitten by walkers during the motel attack.
Due to a train blocking the road, the group stops the RV, only for it to be stolen by Lilly if wasn't left. Lee manages to repair and operate the train, encountering a homeless man named Chuck, who joins their group. The group leaves on the train, however Lee has to persuade Kenny to stop the train in order to end Duck's suffering, which has worsened. After stopping the train, Lee decides who executes Duck. Regardless, Katjaa brings Duck to the forest to say goodbye, and shoots herself instead. When Lee approaches the scene, he decides whether he or Kenny should shoot Duck.
Lee and Kenny rejoin Clementine, Ben and Chuck on the train, where a guilt-ridden Ben admits he was the one giving drugs to the bandits. Shortly after, Lee teaches Clementine how to shoot a gun and cuts her hair, and the two decide to head for Savannah to find Clementine's parents. The train tracks are blocked by a gasoline tanker, which two survivors named Omid and Christa help to bring down. After removing the tanker and seeing a horde of walkers, Omid and Christa join the group and leave on the train, though Omid injures his leg during the escape. As the group enters Savannah, Lee and Kenny hear a man attempting to talk to Clementine over her seemingly broken walkie-talkie; the man wants Clementine to approach him, hinting that he has her parents, and reveals that he knows she is with Lee.
Episode 4: Around Every Corner
The group has made it to Savannah, and is walking through the streets toward the river; however, an unseen person rings a bell in a church, before the man who has been talking to Clementine on her walkie talkie warns the group to hide as walkers are approaching. During the attack, Ben fails to help Clementine, and Chuck is separated from the rest of the group after coming to her aid. Lee, Clementine, Kenny, Ben, Christa and Omid make their way to the backyard of an empty house with a good fortification, which they break into with Clementine's help. The house is found to be safe, save for a young walker Kenny finds in the attic; a starved boy too weak to even attack, Kenny admits he does not want to kill the walker as it resembles Duck. Lee decides if he or Kenny should kill the walker, and, while Lee buries the body, he notices an unseen figure watching him. Omid's leg begin to worsen, and Kenny wonders out loud if it is time to leave him behind.
The next morning, Lee and Kenny head for the waterfront, when another church-bell goes off, luring the walkers away from the area. Reaching the docks, Kenny and Lee finds all boats sunken or stripped for parts; as Lee looks through a telescope for more boats, Lee spots a figure climbing down from a building. After being attacked by the a female scavenger, Clementine appears and causes the woman to back down and introduce herself as Molly, and reveals she rings the bells to draw the walkers from the areas she scavenges. Molly also warns of Crawford, a para-militant, survivalist community that upholds itself by adopting a draconian brand of Social Darwinism, meaning that they cast out or kill anyone weak, sick, elderly, young, or pregnant. A misfired shot from Kenny's gun during the fight soon attracts walkers, and forces the group to split up; Lee escapes into the sewers alone, and, after finding Chuck's remains being eaten by walkers, discovers a hidden community of cancer survivors hiding from Crawford's soldiers. He is greeted by Vernon and Brie, the former being a doctor in charge of the group; Lee persuades him to give medical attention to Omid.
Meanwhile, at the house, Lee discovers Clementine missing, only to find her in the shed outside, where she finds a boat. since the boat needs a battery gasoline to work, and Vernon tells them that Omid will die from his infection without antibiotics, the group, along with Vernon and Brie, head for Crawford's main base for the supplies. The player can then choose to take Clementine or not. After realizing that Crawford is overrun by walkers, the group hides in an old school, where they find most of the supplies they need. Lee and Molly search for the battery inside a nearby abandoned auto-shop, and narrowly escape with it after walkers corner them.
Saving Kenny and Brie by blocking a door with a hatchet, Lee saves Vernon and Christa by killing walkers outside the Nurse's office, Lee meets up with Vernon and Christa, trying to unlock a locked supply closet. By viewing the recorded medical examinations of Anna Correa, a citizen of Crawford being forced into terminating her pregnancy by her doctor, the group see the doctor input the security code before he is killed by Anna, her actions unintentionally causing the outbreak at Crawford. Watching the optional third tape reveals Molly was a citizen of Crawford, and was trading sexual favors with the doctor in exchange for insulin for her sister.
After confronting Molly about the tape, Ben almost attacks them, with the hatchet from the door. The hoard of walkers from outside crash through the door, and, if Lee did not bring Clementine and fails to save Molly, she dies. As Kenny and the group breaks through the stuck door to the armory, Ben confesses about his dealing with the bandits, and admits to indirectly causing the deaths of his Katjaa and Duck. After Kenny demands a group vote to leave Ben, Brie is grabbed and eaten by the walkers. The group enters the armory and heads up the school's bell tower and, after grabbing Ben before he falls at the top, Lee can do as he requests and drop him as bait, or save him.
After making it back to the house, Vernon gives Omid the medicine and talks to Lee in private; he offers to take Clementine off his hands and take her to his own group, where she will be safe. If Molly survived, then she decides to leave the group and says goodbye. Tired from the events, Lee sits down to watch over Clementine and falls asleep. When he awakes the next morning, he finds Clementine and Vernon gone, and discovers Clementine's hat on the lawn her walkie-talkie in an alley; while reaching for it, Lee is attacked by a walker and bitten while killing it. Lee is found by the group, and either has to show or conceal the bite. Determined to rescue Clementine, the player's past decisions and how they treated the members of the group previously influence who joins Lee in his search; alternatively, the player can insist on going alone.
Lee and any of the group members joining him then go searching for Clementine at Vernon's shelter, only to find it abandoned and empty. Suddenly, a hoard of walkers are heard outside, and Clementine and the man contacting her are heard over her walkie-talkie, revealing he has Clementine and is not Vernon. The man warns Lee to choose his words carefully, and the episode ends before Lee responds.
Episode 5: No Time Left

Promotions
The character of Doug is based on Doug Tabacco, a former employee of Telltale Games.[35] He is one of the characters whose fate depends on the actions of the player.
His inclusion in the game was used in early advertisements to promote Telltale's pre-order contest where Telltale would pick people who pre-ordered the game from their website to become human and/or zombie characters in the game.[36]
Reception
The first episode, A New Day, was met with positive reception. The review aggregator website, Metacritic, calculates the review average of the first episode at 82% for the PC version, 84% for the PS3 version, and 79% for the Xbox 360 version.[37] The game received various accolades including the IGN Editors' Choice Award, PC Gamer Editors' Choice Award, Xbox Editors' Choice Award, and the PlayStation Gold Award. The first episode of The Walking Dead topped the charts for the game most played on Xbox Live Arcade for the week of April 30,[38] and stayed at the top of the Xbox Live Arcade charts for two weeks. It topped the sales charts for both PSN and Steam for a week.[39] The first episode sold one million copies in 20 days, making it Telltale's fastest selling title to date. These sales figures do not include iOS sales.[39]
The second episode was also met with positive reception. The third episode, "Long Road Ahead", was met with the same positive reception as the first two. IGN gave it a 9 out of 10, saying "It's a disturbing, depressing and entertaining entry in a journey that's been nothing short of excellent so far."[41] GameSpot gave the game an 8.5, saying "The Walking Dead has passed the midway point of its series of five episodes with every indication that the game will keep getting better right through to its inevitably depressing and unsettling conclusion."[42] MTV also gave it a positive review, saying "Telltale has created a series of wrenching, emotional decisions in the middle of a collection of not-too-hard puzzles in a visually-impressive adaptation of the Robert Kirkman comic series (with some nods to the TV show)."[43]
