José Dias Ferreira, GCTE (Arganil, Pombeiro da Beira, 30 November 1837 – Vidago, 8 September 1909) was a Portuguese lawyer, politician and jurist, son of António Ferreira Dias (São Martinho, Urgueira, c. 1815 – Aldeia Nova, 27 August 1880) and wife Bernarda Pereira de Vasconcelos (c. 1810 – ?).

Career

He served as a Minister, 18th (4 January 1868), 27th (26 May 1870) and 48th (27 May 1892) Minister for Treasury Affairs and Prime Minister of Portugal from 1892 to 1893 and was the country's most influential civil law scholar during the late 19th century[1]. He was also the 250th Grand Cross of the Order of the Tower and Sword.

He married Amélia Ferreira Pinto Basto (Oliveira do Bairro, Oiã, Quinta do Silveiro, 16 June 1838 – Lisbon, 1873), and had issue now almost extinct.

He also had by Eugénia Henriqueta Alves Valdez, 1st Countess of Penalva de Alva (13 January 1840 – 10 December 1920), widow of José Rodrigues Penalva, 1st Viscount of Penalva de Alva (Covilhã, 8 February 1811 – Lisbon, 6 August 1881), Nobleman of the Royal Household, by whom she had issue, one son José Eugénio Dias Ferreira (Lisbon, 13 November 1882 – Lisbon, 17 January 1953), a lawyer, married to Júlia ..., by whom he had Carlos Eugénio Dias Ferreira (Lisbon, 18 May 1908 – ?), also a lawyer, by whose marriage to Julieta Ferreira Teixeira Carvalho was the father, among others, of Manuela Ferreira Leite[2][3][4] and José Eugénio Dias Ferreira.
