Camberwell High School is a state school for boys and girls in Years 7-12 in the Canterbury suburb of Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. Canterbury is a middle/upper class suburb of Melbourne and therefore has produced the surroundings for School of considerable repour to open and establish itself. Camberwell High is considered one of the best public schools in the state after notable entries such as Melbourne High and MacRobertsons Girls School. Previous years VCE results have shown this to be true along with most students going on to University and further education.

School Philosophy

Camberwell High School aims to acheive the best results in Academic, Sport, the Arts, Debating as well as other extra curicular activities. The school regularly sends teams off to state compeititions often taking out the state championship itself. Numerous individuals have won Premiers awards this year as well as in previous years, a group of awards given to the best students in an academic field.

History

When General Macarthur and his accompaning US Army took over Melbourne High in 1941 as their barracks, the Melbourne High students moved out to Camberwell to continue their education during the war years. At the end of the war in 1945 when the US troops left and the Melbourne student returned to their school, Camberwell High School was opened

The names for the houses were derived from war heroes and leaders of World War II. As Camberwell High School was opened in 1945 after the completion of the war, the houses were named after the leaders of the United States and the United Kingdom as well as the US and British Generals.

Debating was highlighted in 2005 with one of the most brilliant House Debating finals in recent memory, where the school champion helped Macarthur take out the tourniment with his best speaker performance.
