Camberwell High is considered one of the best public schools in the state after notable entries such as Melbourne High and MacRobertsons Girls School. History
When General Macarthur and his accompaning US Army took over Melbourne High in 1941 as their barracks, the Melbourne High students moved out to Camberwell to continue their education during the war years. Houses
Inter-house competitions remain an integral part of the school's ethos.
The four Houses with their associated colours are:
- Macarthur (Green)
- Roosevelt (Blue)
- Churchill (Yellow)
- Montgomery (Red)
The names for the houses were derived from war heroes and leaders of World War II. As Camberwell High School was opened in 1945 after the completion of the war, the houses were named after the leaders of the United States and the United Kingdom as well as the US and British Generals.
Debating was highlighted in 2005 with one of the most brilliant House Debating finals in recent memory, where the school champion helped Macarthur take out the tourniment with his best speaker performance.
