Lesja Ukrainka East European National University is a Ukrainian university in Lutsk, named after Lesya Ukrainka.

History

History of the university dates back to 1940 when Lutsk State Teachers’Institute was founded. 135 students were enrolled to the first year of studying. Educational process was conducted by 50 professors. Four departments were functioning: philological with Ukrainian and Russian branches, physico-mathematical, natural sciences and geography, and distant.

Functioning of the university was interrupted by the war (1941), and was renewed in 1946. In September 1951 starts a new period in the history – pedagogical institute was created on the basis of teachers’ institute, and in a year the university was given the name of Lesya Ukrainka. At that time the university had only two faculties: historical and philological and mathematical. At the beginning of the 90-s already nine faculties were functioning at the institute. In July 16, 1993 according to the decree of President Leonid Kravchuk it was created Lesya Ukrainka Volyn State University on the basis of Lesya Ukrainka Lutsk State Pedagogical institute.

In September 2007 according to the decree of President Viktor Yushchenko Lesya Ukrainka Volyn State University was given a status of national. In August 2012 according to the decree of President Viktor Yanukovych Lesya Ukrainka Volyn National University was renamed in Lesya Ukrainka East European National University.

Campuses and buildings

Nine academic buildings, five dormitories, library (collection of over 400 thousand publications), 4 museums, sanatorium preventorium and student polyclinic, sports complex and stadium, practice base camp “Hart”.

Right now five institutes and thirteen departments are functioning in the structure of the university:

• Institute of Social Sciences

Specialties: culturology, religious studies, sociology, philosophy.

• Institute of Physical Culture and Health

Specialties: Olympic and professional sport; physical rehabilitation; physical education.

• Pedagogical Institute

Specialties: preschool upbringing, preschool education, primary teaching, primary education, social pedagogy.

• Institute of Arts

Specialties: music art, visual arts, choreography.

• Departments of Psychology

Specialties: psychology.

• Departments of History

Specialties: documentation and informational activity; history; museology and protection historical and cultural sites; political science.

• Department of Chemistry

Specialties: chemistry; ecology and environmental protection.

• Biological department

Specialties: biology; forestry and landscape gardening management.

• Mathematical Department

Specialties: computer science; mathematics.

• Department of Economics

Specialties: enterprise economics, accounting and auditing, finance and credit; management of innovational activity; management.

• Romance-Germanic Philology Department

Specialties: language and literature (English); language and literature (German); language and literature (French); applied linguistics.

• Department of Law

Specialties: jurisprudence.

• Department of Foreign Affairs

Specialties: country studies; international information; international relations; international economic relations.

• Institute of Philology and Journalism

Specialties: Ukrainian language and literature (with an additional qualification “teacher of foreign literature”); language and literature (Russian) (with an additional qualification “teacher of foreign (English) language”); language and literature (Polish) (with an additional qualification “teacher of foreign (English) language”); journalism; publishing and editing.

• Department of Physics

Specialties: physics; physics-informatics.

• Department of Geography

Specialties: geography; hotel management; economic and social geography; system of land use and cadaster; tourism.

• Preparatory Department

Aim of Preparatory Department is to provide with conditions of quality training of citizens for passing of external independent scoring by means of thorough study of academic disciplines, entering high school and successful adaptation to studying in higher educational establishment. Also there is a preparatory department for foreign citizens.

• Teaching and Research Center of Postgraduate Education

Specialties:physical rehabilitation, Ukrainian language and literature, language and literature (English) Language and Literature (German), psychology, finance and credit, accounting and auditing, law, land management and cadastre, informatics, pre-school education.

Awards and reputation

Lesya Ukrainka Volyn National University was awarded the honorary title “Leader of modern education” according to the results of X International Exhibition of Educational Institutions “Modern Education in Ukraine 2007” and was awarded with a bronze medal in the category “Modernization of higher education in a context of requirements of the Bologna Convention”. For development and implementation into teaching and educational process of innovational educational technologies the university was awarded witha diploma of exhibition “Innovational educational technologies 2007”. The university is a winner in a nomination “International cooperation in the branch of education and science 2007” of International exhibition “Education and career – Student’s day” (2008).

Activity of the university in the sphere of international relations was mentioned in Ukraine and abroad. In march 7-8, 2008 the delegation of the university took part in IX International Educational Fair “Perspektywy 2008” that was held in Warsaw. In 2009 VNU became a winner of the exhibition of Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine in nomination “International cooperation in sphere of education and science”.

VNU became a winner in a nomination of Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine “International cooperation in the sphere of education and science” in an exhibition “Modern education in Ukraine 2009” that was held in February 25-27, 2009 in Kyiv.
