Cathal Naughton (born 2 January 1987) is an Irish hurler who currently plays as a wing-forward for the Cork senior team.

Naughton made his first appearance for the team during the 2006 championship and has become a regular player over the last few seasons. During that time he has enjoyed little success with the team, however, he has won one Munster winners' medals as a non-playing substitute.

At club level Naughton is a double Munster winners' medalist with Newtownshandrum. In addition to this he has also won two county championship winners' medals.

Playing career

Club

Naughton plays his club hurling with the Newtownshandrum club in north Cork and has enjoyed much success.

In 2005 Naughton had just turned eighteen-years-old when he won his first county championship winners' medal following a 0-15 to 0-9 defeat of Cloyne.[1] He later collected his first Munster club winners' medal following a one-point defeat of Ballygunner.[2] Naughton's side subsequently qualified for an All-Ireland final showdown with Portumna. A dominant first-half display gave Portumna a 2-8 to 1-6 victory.[3]

Naughton won a second county championship winners' medal in 2009 following a 3-22 to 1-12 trouncing of Sarsfield's.[4] This was later converted into a second Munster title following a 2-11 to 2-9 defeat of Ballygunner.[5]

Inter-county

Naughton first came to prominence on the inter-county scene in 2004 as a member of the Cork minor hurling team. He won back-to-back Munster titles in this grade, however, an All-Ireland final appearance eluded the team.[6]

By 2007 Naughton had joined the Cork under-21 hurling team. He won a Munster title in that grade that year, however, Cork were later defeated in the All-Ireland semi-final.[7]

By this stage Naughton had already joined the Cork senior hurling panel. He made his competitive debut in a National Hurling League game against Clare in 2006 and was later included in Cork's championship panel.[8] In that year's All-Ireland semi-final between Cork and Waterford Naughton was surprisingly sprung from the bench and scored a goal and a point with his first two touches of the sliotar. His introduction was seen as the winning of the match for Cork.[9] Naughton was also introduced as a late substitute in Cork's subsequent All-Ireland final defeat by Kilkenny.

Since then Naughton has become a regular member of Cork's starting fifteen.

Inter-provincial

Naughton has also lined out Munster in the inter-provincial series of games. He played once for his province in a semi-final defeat of Ulster in 2009.[10]

Personal life

Naughton is the youngest of three sons born to Dermot and Josephine Naughton. He was educated at the local national school in Newtownshandrum before later attending Charleville C.B.S. It was here that he first developed his skills as a sportsperson, winning numerous Limerick Colleges competitions and a Munster 'B' Colleges hurling medal in 2003.[11]

Naughton was also an outstanding soccer player with Charleville A.F.C., with whom he won many honours and also played with the Limerick Schoolboy League in the Kennedy Cup. He spent a year at Nottingham Forest F.C. academy in his teens and he was offered a contract with the club but declined the offer in favour of continuing his education at home. He was also invited to try out for Manchester City F.C.. At home, Naughton played representative soccer with Ireland on four occasions at under-17 level.[12]

Naughton studied Business at the Cork Institute of Technology.
