History

Beginnings, Stay Up, Get Down, and The Way We Talk (2006-2007)

The Maine was created by bassist Garrett Nickelsen and drummer Pat Kirch in November 2006. The band's name derives from lyrics in the song Coast of Maine by Ivory.[citation needed] Singer John O'Callaghan joined soon after auditions for the band with no prior vocal experience, along with musicians Ryan Osterman and Alex Ross. Together, the collective released the EP Stay Up, Get Down. Shortly thereafter Ryan and Alex departed the band for unknown reasons, but were replaced with Kennedy Brock and Jared Monaco. The Maine signed to Fearless Records and on December 11, 2007 debuted with a five song EP entitled The Way We Talk, produced by Matt Grabe.[1]

Can't Stop, Won't Stop and ...And a Happy New Year (2008-2009)

The Maine's first full-length album, Can't Stop, Won't Stop, was produced by Matt Squire[2] and was released in the summer of 2008, just before the band toured with Good Charlotte and Boys Like Girls. In the fall of 2008, The Maine and We the Kings supported The Academy Is... on its tour in the United Kingdom.

The band's next release was a holiday EP in December 2008 titled ...And a Happy New Year, produced by Matt Grabe.[1] The EP included three new original tracks and a cover of the Wham! song "Last Christmas". In 2009, the band signed to Warner Bros. Records. In February 2009, The Maine toured on 'The Secret Valentine' tour, headlining We the Kings along with The Cab, VersaEmerge and There For Tomorrow. Furthermore, in July the band performed on the Vans Warped Tour, a popular touring music festival for adolescents. In December 2009, The Maine released This Is Real Life, its first published book. It consists of written memoirs from the band and photographs by Dirk Mai, recapitulating the members' adventures on the Vans Warped Tour.

Black and White (2010)

On July 13, 2010, The Maine released its second full-length album, Black & White, produced by Howard Benson.[3] In November 2010, while on the Harmony tour with Never Shout Never, The Maine and NSN had fans gather canned foods to help those in need. As a 'thank you' gift, both acts released a split EP titled Split - EP. On December 27, 2010, The Maine released the LP "In Darkness and in Light Box Set" on iTunes.

Aside from recording music, The Maine has other projects it undertakes for its fans. The band has released two books, This Is Real Life and Black & White Keepsake Book. The former is composed of photos taken by the band's friend Dirk Mai as well as journal entries written by the band members during the 2009 Vans Warped Tour. The latter consists of photos and journals from the band members. Later in 2010, John collaborated with Dirk Mai in the creation of Exaltation, a book containing 15 poems written by O'Callaghan complemented by nine accompanying photographs by Mai.

The band has played in many tours including the Vans Warped Tour and The Bamboozle Roadshow. The band embarked on its first headlining tour in 2010, An Evening with The Maine. In October 2010, The Maine supported Never Shout Never on the Harmony tour.

Pioneer (2011-present)

In February 2011, The Maine embarked on an international tour that began in the Philippines. From there the members traveled to Australia and performed at Soundwave. They re-joined Never Shout Never for a European tour culminating in the U.K.. In April 2011, the band co-headlined a U.S. tour with Augustana, lasting from early May to June 18, 2011.[4] The band began touring with Taking Back Sunday and Bad Rabbits in October 2011.

The band has confirmed that it is working on a new album titled "Pioneer". The Maine has been playing 3 new songs on tour and performed one live exclusivley for Fuel. TV, "Don't Give Up on Us".[5]

The band announced via Facebook that it was to headline a tour in the fall of 2011 to promote its third studio album, Pioneer. The album features the popular songs "Don't Give Up On Us", "My Heroine" and lead single "Some Days". It was released on December 6, 2011 independently through Action Theory Records.[6] The album was available to pre-order officially on November 1, 2011. On the band's Facebook page, the song Don't Give Up On Us was offered as a free download.[7] In addition, the single Some Days was available for download on iTunes beginning November 15.

The Maine visited the Fearless Radio studio on December 21, 2011 to talk about its new album, its plans for 2012, and more. Listen to the discussion here: The Maine podcast[dead link][8]

The band released a music video, "Misery," from its album Pioneer, on February 16, 2012. The band also released a cover of The Beatles' hit "With A Little Help From My Friends" on Spotify. The song was recorded along with touring mates, American band Lydia and Canadian indie-rock band Arkells.

The band will be starting their European tour in late summer with This Century, and they will also be working on a new DVD on July 28 in São Paulo, Brazil.

The band recently announced that they will be re-releasing Pioneer on September 11 in the UK and Europe. The album will contain 6 brand new tracks and will be released through Rude Records. It will be titled 'Pioneer and The Good Love'.
