WBQD-LP is the MyNetworkTV-affiliated television station for the Quad Cities of Eastern Iowa and West-Central Illinois licensed to Davenport, Iowa. It broadcasts a low-powered analog signal on UHF channel 26 from a transmitter on 70th Street, next to Black Hawk College, near the Poplar Grove section of Moline, Illinois. The station is currently not being offered on Mediacom systems. Owned by Four Seasons Broadcasting, WBQD is operated through a local marketing agreement (LMA) by Local TV. This makes it sister to ABC affiliate WQAD-TV and the two outlets share studios on Park 16th Street in Moline.
However, some internal operations of WBQD (such as the maintenance of program logs) are based at the shared facilities of co-owned MyNetworkTV affiliate WAOE as well as ABC/CW affiliate WHOI and NBC affiliate WEEK-TV in Peoria, Illinois. Syndicated programming on this station includes That '70s Show, Frasier, Scrubs, and Roseanne among others. During overnight hours, the station airs programming from Corner Store TV. Due to its low-powered status, it does not operate a digital signal of its own. As a result, one is provided in standard definition through WQAD's third digital subchannel. This broadcasts on UHF channel 38.3 (or virtual channel 8.3 via PSIP) from a transmitter in the Western Township, Illinois village of Orion. WBQD is known on-air as My TV 8.3 based on the virtual channel location.
History
Second Generation of Iowa, the owner of KFXA in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, had originally received a license to broadcast on channel 53. However, the company was unable to get the station on-the-air and on November 21, 2000 transferred the license to Four Seasons Broadcasting (a partnership between Malibu Broadcasting in Cleveland, Ohio and Venture Technologies Group, LLC in Los Angeles, California). In May 2002 after receiving permission to begin broadcasting on UHF channel 26, this station began transmitter tests and signed-on with UPN programming on June 1. On September 5, 2006, WBQD became a MyNetworkTV affiliate.[1] It adopted the nickname "My TV 16" in reference to its channel number on Mediacom.[2] Its over-the-air signal does not reach the entire market due to its low-power status. However, WBQD is more widely available on WQAD's third digital subchannel.
The station had a construction permit for a low-power digital transmitter on VHF channel 7 with the calls WBQD-LD. However on June 30, 2009, the owner of the station filed for digital displacement relief and requested to move its digital channel assignment to UHF channel 14 instead.[3] After an engineering study, it was determined that even as a low-power digital station, WBQD would cause and/or receive more than acceptable interference to and from KWWL in Waterloo, Iowa and KHQA-TV in Hannibal, Missouri both of which are full power digital television stations that broadcast on channel 7 and having "flash-cut" to their former analog channel after the digital transition.[4] Weeknights at 11:30, WBQD repeates WQAD's late night newscast as seen in its entirely earlier at 10.
